Differentiating Between the

Common Cold and the Flu.

Fall Newsletter.

DWAYNE HAUS, N.D.

It can be very difficult to tell the difference between a cold

and flu. Even health
professionals frequently misdiagnosis
the symptoms and
incorrectly inform
their patients. This is
because there are
similarities between
the two, with the difference frequently
being the severity of
particular symptoms.
What they have in

Lipsticks Contain Excessive Lead, Tests Reveal

ATLANTA (Reuters)
- Lipsticks tested by a
U.S. consumer rights
group found that
more than half contained lead and some

popular brands including Cover Girl,

L'Oreal and Christian
Dior had more lead
than others, the group
said on Thursday.

in Santa Fe Spring, California,
found that 61 percent had detectable lead levels of 0.03 to 0.65
parts per million (ppm).
Lipstick, like candy, is ingested.
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a coalition of public health,
environmental and women's
groups, said the FDA has not set
a limit for lead in lipstick.
One-third of the lipsticks tested
contained an amount of lead that
exceeded the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration's 0.1 ppm
limit for lead in candy -- a standard established to protect children from ingesting lead, the
group said. Thirty-nine percent
of the lipsticks tested had no discernible lead, it said.
"It's critical that manufacturers
reformulate their product," said
Stacy Malkan, a co-founder of
the coalition. "It's possible to
make lipsticks without lead, and
all companies should be doing
that."
Lead can cause learning, language and behavioral problems
such as reduced school performance and increased aggression.
Pregnant women and young children are particularly vulnerable
to lead exposure, the group said
in its statement. Lead has also
been linked to infertility and
miscarriage, it said.

L'Oreal is one of the largest cosmetic companies in the world.
Over the last three months, more
than 20 million toys made in
China have been recalled, mostly
due to the use of lead paint.

The coalition said that some less

expensive brands it had tested,
such as Revlon, had no detectable levels of lead, while the more
expensive Dior Addict brand had
higher levels than some other
brands.
The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association trade group
said in a statement that lead was
a naturally occurring element
that was not intentionally added
to cosmetics.
The FDA has "set strict limits
for lead levels allowed in the
colors used in lipsticks, and actually analyze most of these to
ensure they are followed," the
association's statement said.
"The products identified in the
(CSC) report meet these standards."
L'Oreal's U.S. arm said its products are reviewed and tested by a
safety team that includes toxicologists, pharmacists and doctors.
"All the brands of the L'Oreal
Group are in full compliance
with FDA regulations" as well as
safety requirements in international markets, L'Oreal USA said
in a statement.
P&G said in a statement that the
quantity of lead a consumer
might be exposed to from its lip
product "is hundreds of times

less than the amount that she

would get from eating, breathing
and drinking water."
"Lead builds up in the body over
time and lead-containing lipstick
applied several times a day, every day, can add up to significant
exposure levels. The latest studies show there is no safe level of
lead exposure," said Dr. Mark
Mitchell, president of the Connecticut Coalition for Environmental Justice.

The reason I have included
this article is due to the issue of
Heavy Metal toxicity and health.
This region has been identified
by the United States Geological
Survey as having a higher than
normal amount of Lead present
in soil samples. With the incidents of Heavy Metal toxicity
that I see, and the results from
Hair Mineral Analysis, I feel that
you should know what is in the
products you are using. If you
would like to schedule an appointment to discuss Heavy Metal toxicity and your health,
please give the office a call to
schedule an appointment so that
we may address this issue. With
the use of some herbals, we have
been able to help people address
the Lead and other Heavy Metal
issues.

Colds and Flu. continued

There are hundreds of different
types of virus that can cause a
cold, which explains why some
people get repeated colds.
Cold symptoms usually last
about 10-14 days, the length of
time it takes your immune system to fight the virus.
The best way to determine if you
have a cold is to look at the
symptoms together:
Fever: rare
Aches: slight
Chills: uncommon
Tiredness/weakness: mild
Suddenness of symptoms: appear gradually
Coughing: hacking, producing
discharge
Sneezing: common
Stuffy nose: common
Sore throat: common
Chest discomfort: usually mild
or not present
Headache: uncommon
Recognizing the flu
Flu is caused by the influenza
virus. There are three major
types: A (often the cause of flu
epidemics), B and C. The flu
virus is constantly changing its
structure, so new strains appear
each year. People do not have
immunity to the new strains,
which is why the flu can be
caught repeatedly. It is also why
many health professionals feel
that flu shots expose the populace to unnecessary risks with
little benefit.
VO L U M E 1 , I SSU E 3

The flu is a contagious virus that

is spread from one person to another through tiny droplets that
are released into the air when a
person infected with the flu
coughs or sneezes. Sometimes,
people can become infected by
touching their nose or mouth after touching something infected
by the flu virus. A typical case
of the flu can last up to one
week.
As with a cold, recognizing the
flu can best be done by examining the symptoms as a whole:
Fever: usually present
Aches: usually present and severe
Chills: fairly common
Tiredness/weakness: moderate to
severe
Suddenness of symptoms: can be
suddenwithin 3 to 6 hours
Coughing: dry and not producing discharge
Sneezing: uncommon
Stuffy nose: uncommon
Sore throat: uncommon
Chest discomfort: often severe
Headache: common

Fighting a cold or the flu

Anyone can catch a cold or flu.
The peak months, according to
the Center for Disease Control,
are November through March.
This happens because not only
are people indoors in close proximity to one another more frequently, but because central
heating dries out the normally
moist nasal mucosaan important defense against invading
viruses.
Though anyone can get a cold or
flu, those who are immunosupressed or have chronic lung
or heart disease, are much more
predisposed to being affected by
the viruses.
Since both the flu and the common cold are virus-related, many
of the nutrients necessary to effectively combat them are similar. Moreover, in both cases,
preventative steps taken before
being exposed in the first place
is extremely beneficial.

Why Homeopathics, and how to use them:
Yes, it's natural, but did you know?
Homeopathic medicines are manufactured and labeled under specifications recognized by the U.S. FDA. They have been safely
and effectively used for over 200 years. After herbal medicine, homeopathy is the second most widely used health care system in
the world. There are no additives, fillers, ect. It is neither habit forming or fattening, and has no known side effects.
How to take them
A dose is considered as the number of times a remedy is taken, not the number of pills. The number of pills, except in low
strengths such as 3x or 4x, isn't critical. Three to five pills or drops is a convenient number. Pour pills into the cap and toss them
into the mouth. A dose may be dissolved in water if desired. Take 15 or 20 minutes before or after meals- in an emergency situation, don't wait.
How often to take them
Repeat as directed by your practitioner or in accordance with the label. We advise people to reduce or stop repetition as improvement occurs, repeating as necessary. Rarely are remedies taken for extended periods of time.
If you have any questions about the use of Homeopathic preparations, please feel free to contact me at any time to discuss this or
any issue.
