losing.
There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that's first place. I have
finished second twice in my time at Green Bay, and I don't ever want to finish second again. There
is a second place bowl game, but it is a game for losers played by losers. It is and always has been
an American zeal to be first in anything we do, and to win, and to win, and to win.
Every time a football player goes to play his trade he's got to play from the ground up - from the
soles of his feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play. Some guys play with their heads.
That's O.K. You've got to be smart to be number one in any business. But more importantly, you've
got to play with your heart, with every fiber of your body. If you're lucky enough to find a guy with
a lot of head and a lot of heart, he's never going to come off the field second.
Running a football team is no different than running any other kind of organization - any army, a
political party or a business. The principles are the same. The object is to win - to beat the other guy.
Maybe that sounds hard or cruel. I don't think it is.
It is a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most
competitive men. That's why they are there - to compete. To know the rules and objectives when
they get in the game. The objective is to win fairly, squarely, by the rules - but to win.
And in truth, I've never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart,
didn't appreciate the grind, the discipline. There is something in good men that really yearns for
discipline and the harsh reality of head to head combat.
I don't say these things because I believe in the "brute" nature of man or that men must be brutalized
to be combative. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any
man's finest hour - his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear - is that moment when he has to work

Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow
There are two days in every week that we should not worry about, two days that
should be kept free from fear and apprehension.
One is YESTERDAY, with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches
and pains. YESTERDAY has passed, forever beyond our control.
All the money in the world cannot bring back YESTERDAY. We cannot undo a
single act we've performed. Nor can we erase a single word we've said,
YESTERDAY is gone!
The other day we shouldn't worry about is TOMORROW, with its impossible
adversaries, its burdens, its hopeful promise and poor performance. TOMORROW is
beyond our control.
TOMORROW's sun will rise either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds, but it
will rise. And until it does, we have no stake in TOMORROW, for it is yet unborn.
This leaves only one day, TODAY. Any person can fight the battles of just one day.
It is only when we add the burdens of YESTERDAY and TOMORROW that we
break down. It is not the experience of today that drives people mad, it is the
remorse of bitterness for something which happened YESTERDAY, and the dread
of what TOMORROW may bring.

Philosophy
One of the greatest and most successful offenses ever created was the Wishbone. However, many
Wishbone teams all came across the same problem, which is throwing the football in obvious
passing situations. The triple option is one of the best plays ever drawn up, but the key ingredient to
a successful offense is balance. In today’s game it is very difficult to win championships without
being able to throw the football. The Spread Run & Gun is the best of both worlds. A solid Option
game has proven to be extremely effective against pass oriented defensive sets and the Shotgun
spread alignment can keep defenses from crowding the box.
The Spread Run & Gun offense is a run first oriented offense that will control the tempo of the
game. This offense is very flexible in that if we need to run a hurry up offense we can. If we want to
control the clock and slow the tempo of the game we can do that as well. Just because we are a run
first team this does not mean the threat of pass is not there. We will take what the defense gives us.
If they are determined to stop the run game we will take advantage and throw the football. We will
run our basic plays out of several different formations to keep the defense constantly adjusting,
which in turn will help expose their weaknesses. We also have many balanced sets, which will force
the defense to play a more “vanilla” style of defense. If they choose to overload the wide side of the
field we will out number them on the weak side. Our goal is to always come out and establish the
running game until they load up the box and stop it. At this point we will begin to throw the ball
with quick passes and screens, which will open up the down field passing game later.

Advantages of running the Spread Run & Gun
♦ The Option offers the best running attack in football, while the Gun is a pass oriented
set.
♦ It is a very flexible offense, which gives us the option to read the defense then call the
play. It also gives us a great audible package.
♦ By being in a two-point stance, the offensive linemen hides the Running Back, making
it difficult for them to find him.
♦ The Running Backs have cutback possibilities (like an ‘I’ back), a factor which destroys
Option linebacker keys.
♦ The secondary, particularly the Safety, cannot tell the difference between run or pass
because the offensive line is already up in a two-point stance.
♦ After the Quarterback disconnects from his Option read, he becomes a north/south
runner, making it difficult for the defense to play a feather technique.
♦ Because the Quarterback is going downhill sooner, he does not have to be as fast as he
would have to be if he were aligning under center.
♦ Because the Quarterback is away from the line of scrimmage, the offensive line cannot
be overpowered by 2 techniques.
♦ This offense is very formation friendly. We can run our base plays out of almost any
spread formation.
♦ It is easier for the Quarterback to make his option reads from the Gun.

2. The Receivers will get the play from their wristband and line up
quickly.

Lining Up:
1. The Lineman will line up on the LOS as quickly as possible in a ready
football position.
2. The Backs and Receivers will line up in the formation called from the
sideline.
B. The Quarterback can also call the play in a sequence of two and
repeat it twice (Example: Orange 630, Green 710). The play used
will be the first number called unless the Quarterback says
“Deuce”. This means the play run will be the second number.
Example 1. Coach calls in play 16. Quarterback repeats “16”, then calls out
“Tuesday, Tuesday”. The players look at their wristbands and get the
play that corresponds to “16”. The count is on 2.
Example 2. Coach calls in play to the Quarterback. Quarterback then calls out
“Black 546, Red 514” twice, then calls out “Monday, Monday”. The
play in Black 546 on 1.

No Huddle: Tempo
Our No-Huddle system can be run in three different modes, which will dictate the
tempo of the game to the defense. The different modes should also help in adjusting to
different situations during the game. Prior to each offensive series, the coaches will
dictate which mode we will use.
“Attack Mode”: This mode is our hurry-up or 2-minute offence. We can still call our
entire offensive package, but we will usually stick to the following.

“Normal Mode”: This mode is our basic no-huddle package. The coaches will dictate the
formation and call in the play number, which is on the QB’s wristband.

Blocks/Schemes/Line Calls
Individual Blocks
Base Block: 1 on 1 block. Turn defender away from the hole.
C Block: Used with Bootlegs. Play side Tackle baits the DE by going to the 2nd level and
coming back around and blocking the DE.
Chop/Cut: Used to get defender’s hands down. Punch through the thigh of the defender.
Crack Block: Wide Receiver seals down inside on 2nd level defender. NO CLIPS/CUTS.
Cut-Off: Combination of a Chop and Reach block.
Down Block: Used play side. Block the first man to the inside.
Kick-Out: Pull and drive the defender away from the hole. “Head in the hole”.
Log: Pull and seal the perimeter defender.
Pass Set: Used with Draws and Screens. Plant inside foot, hinge back, then drive block.
Pull Lead: Pull and lead up through the hole. Seal 1st defender inside.
Reach Block: Used against an outside shaded defender. Turn defender away from hole.
Stalk Block: Used by Wide Receiver’s against Defensive Backs.
Trap Block: Used with Trap and G. Pull and kick-out defender being trapped.
Combo Blocks
Backside Seal: Backside linemen reach block play side. NO PENETRATION.
Chip-off: 2-Man combo block. Start with a double team, chip-off to linebacker.
Come Around: 2-Man combo block. Outside man blocks down, inside man pulls around to the
linebacker.
Cross Block: 2-Man combo block. Outside man blocks down, inside man pulls and blocks out.
Double: 2-Man combo block. Inside man posts, outside man drives. Work hips together and
drive away from the hole.
Fold: 2-Man combo block. Inside man blocks out, outside man comes underneath and
blocks the linebacker.
Man Pass Pro: Man on man stack blocking for the linemen. Also known as “Big on Big”. Running
Backs check inside out for blitzing linebackers.
Zone Pass Pro: Step and reach play side, protecting the play side gap. Do not chase. If a
defender leaves, someone will be coming back. Also known as “Slide” protection.
Line Calls
“Odd”: Pre-snap call by the Center. Center covered by a nose guard.
“Even”: Pre-snap call by the Center. Center uncovered. Guards covered by DT’s.
“Bear”: Pre-snap call by the Center. Center and Guards are covered.
“Flash”: Pre-snap call by the Center telling the LG that he will help with a double
team or chip-off block. (Depending on play)
“Thunder”: Pre-snap call by the Center telling the RG that he will help with a double
team or chip-off block. (Depending on play)
“Mark”: Pre-snap Cross-block call. Used by play side Tackle and Tight End.
“Dave”: Pre-snap Double team call.
“Chuck”: Pre-snap call after a “Dave” call, telling the other lineman in the double
team, who is chipping to the 2nd level.
“Kate”: Pre-snap Come Around Block call.
“Fred”: Pre-snap call for a Fold Combo block.
“Phil”: Pre-snap call by the Wingback. Wingback will fold under and lead through
the hole blocking the Linebacker.

Rip - The Left Wingback short belly motions into the backfield and at the snap of the ball
should be 5 yards deep and 2 yards from the quarterback.
Liz - The Right Wingback short belly motions into the backfield and at the snap of the ball
should be 5 yards deep and 2 yards from the quarterback.
Arrow - The A Back (when the Wing) motions out toward the sideline and at the snap of the ball
should be 7 yards away from the end man on the line of scrimmage.
Fire - The F Back (when the Wing) motions out toward the sideline and at the snap of the ball

Slant (2) : Outside Receiver inside break, 3 steps up field, break to the middle the

Player Alignments
Fullback/Halfback: The Fullback sets up 5 yards deep and aligns himself on the Quarterback, not
on the Guards (the O-Line’s splits can change from play to play). The proper
alignment can be determined by the Quarterback and Fullback extending their
arms so their fingertips touch.
Wingback: The Wingbacks set up two feet outside the Offensive Tackle or Tight End and
one yard deep. If the Wingback is covered by a defender, he should widen his
split by one yard.
Wide Receivers: If on a hash mark the Wide Receiver to the boundary lines up 4 yards from the
sideline. The Wide Receiver to the wide side of the field always aligns 2 yards
outside the hash mark. If the ball is in the middle of the field, the Wide
Receivers line up at the top of the numbers.
Tight Ends: The Tight End follows the same rules as the linemen. If the Tight End is
covered by a defender, he should widen his split one foot, making his split four
feet.
Offensive Line: The O-Line sets up in a 2-point stance and should align as far off the ball as the
rules allow. The base split is 2 ½ feet, but there are two split adjustment
rules.
Rule Exception: During Zone run plays (400 Series) the O-Line will take 2-Foot
splits and will not adjust.

Pass Game Concept Structure
Route Organization:
A 1 step pass is called with a 700 number. 7 meaning 1 step pass. The 2nd digit is the route
the widest Receiver’s on the field will do. If there is a 3rd digit that is other than a zero, it
designates the inside Receiver’s route.
Example: Green 715 7= 1 Step Pass 1= Outside Receivers run Hitch’s 5= Inside Receivers run Turn’s
3 Step Passing
Protections:
Gold: Indicates 3 Step Big on Big Stack Responsibility Protection.
Yellow: Indicates Max Protection. (Tight Ends, Running Backs, and Wingbacks stay in to
protect unless tagged with a route).
Route Organization:
Designated routes go from left to right (1st digit= Receiver widest left…Last digit= Receiver widest
right). The letter “L” designates that that Receiver in the sequence stays in and blocks. An “L” will
only be designated to a Tight End or Wingback. If a Receiver is tagged with a route then the digit
sequence skips that Receiver. The Fullback/Halfback never has a designated route unless tagged.

Scramble System
At certain times throughout a game, situations will develop where the Quarterback
finds himself “on the run”. When this happens we need everyone on the same page.
If we follow a few simple rules we have a chance for a BIG PLAY!
O-Line: Stay with your blocks until the whistle blows. Never give up! If you here a
“GO” call, block the nearest defender up field. Keep from being called for a
“dumb” penalty.
Receivers: The play side Receiver that is deep, should come back to the Quarterback
and get into the QB’s vision. The play side receiver that is intermediate,
should stay intermediate and get into the QB’s vision. The play side
Receiver that is short should break deep. Backside Receivers should stay at
their depth but work towards the middle of the field.

Wingbacks: The Wingbacks set up in a 2-point stance turned in 45° toward the QB.

Situation Offense
Backed Up: Coming out from our own goal line to the 5 yards line.
Utilize QB Slam and Blast out of our base offense. Interior runs, quick developing
plays out of our Goal-Line package. Quick 1 step passes with “Max” protection. Don’t
get sacked, intentional ground, or hold the ball in your own end zone, or it will coast us
a safety.
Think field position until we cross our own 20 yard line. Past our 20 yard line, run our
game plan from any formation.
With more downs we can take more chances on short yardage plays on 1st and 2nd
down to create a manageable 3rd or 4th down conversion. We can also run play action
pass on any down.
As the field shortens, defenses will tighten and usually play man coverage and blitz
with less field to defend. We need high percentage of scoring once we get into the Red
Zone. Play Action passes will be highly considered on 1st and 2nd down. NO
TURNOVER / NO PENALTIES.
Inside the 5 yard line we can still run our base offense, but straight ahead plays such as
Crunch, Blast, Slam and Power will be the running plays of choice. Play Action passes
will be considered on 1st and 2nd down. We also can utilize our Goal-Line Offense and
run quick hitting plays.

Time/Quarter/Score:
2-Minute: When we are behind and there is less than 2 minutes remaining in the game.
Since our base offense is spread and out of the shotgun we are in a good position to run
the 2-minute offense. Since we need to score quickly, 3 step drop pass plays will be
primarily used, but 1 step passes and screens will also be considered. Our Option plays,
QB Draw, and Trick Plays will also be used to keep the defense off balance and
guessing. GET OUT OF BOUNDS AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE.
We will primarily stay in our base offense and run our game plan, but no high risk
plays will be used. Play Action and 1 step passes will be used sparingly. DO NOT
FORCE THE BALL, IF NO ONE IS OPEN THROW IT AWAY OR TAKE THE
SACK. KEEP THE CLOCK RUNNING. NO TURNOVERS!
We need to first decide if we want to try to score before the end of the half or if we
want to run the clock out. If we are inside our own 30 yard line and the probability of
us scoring is very little then we will call safe running plays to run the clock out or
maybe get lucky and break a big play. If we are over our own 30 yard line and think we
have a possibility of scoring then we will throw the ball downfield and utilize out 2-
Minute offense. If we are over the 50 yard line and our Quarterback can reach the end
zone then we will throw a Hail Mary on our last play of the half.
If we are winning with less than a minute remaining in the game then we will simply
kneel on the football. If our opponent has timeouts remaining we will run our
possession offense. If we are behind with less than a minute remaining then we will use
our 2-Minute offense to try to score and win the game. Pass plays toward the sideline
will have to be used to save time on the clock. If we have timeouts remaining we can
use the middle of the field if the defense is giving it to us. If we are out of range for a
Hail Mary on the last play of the game we will run a short pass or screen and perform a
series of laterals in an attempt to score. If our Quarterback can reach the end zone then
we will throw a Hail Mary on the last play of the game.
Personnel Packages:
Our base personnel will be comprised of our best 11 offensive players, since this
personnel package will be used the majority of the time.
Hawk: Our base offense with the A Back being the lone back in the backfield.
Our Hawk package will be comprised of our Base personnel with the A Back being the
lone back in our single back sets in place of the B Back.

In our short yardage/goal line package we want to get our biggest and strongest players
into the game to over power and create a surge into the defense. In this situation size
and power takes priority over speed.

Within our offense we will have trick plays that will be in our game play from
week to week. These plays might not be consistant with our normal offense. By
utilizing trick plays we can keep defenses off balance and hopefully make a BIG
