SURFACE PREPARATION

A. Before blast cleaning the surface under interest shall be thoroughly checked
for cleanliness from dirt, grease, oil , sharp edges. If found shall be removed
before taking up to blasting & painting. If oil/grease or any other
contamination is found to be present the surface shall be washed with 2%
emulsifying liquid by volume of water. Ref.. .attached annexure for blasting
requirement.
B. Abrasive material for blast cleaning shall be iron grit/shot. The abrasive
material shall be of good quality, be dry & free from any impurities like
loam, oil, grease, moisture etc.
C. Weld and other sharp edges that will be coated shall be prepared in
accordance with Appendix C. Designation C of NACE RP017. Outside of
the tank shall be cleaned with potable water wash wherever of salt
contamination/ rust accumulation for long back applied primer paint depend
upon the physical condition of the tank shell plate and salt contamination

shall be check as per requirement. Prior to intermediate and finish coat

painting QMD verification is required.
D. The environmental condition shall be monitored during the blasting
operation & painting application. The relative humidity shall in no case be
more than 85% at any point during the period of surface preparation &
painting application.
E. The temperature condition of the substrate must be min. 30c above dew
point temperature during abrasive blast cleaning and coating. After blasting
the surface shall be cleaned thoroughly to remove all dirt, dust, weld spatter
if any and should confirm to cleaning standard SA-21/2. The surface profile
shall be checked by surface profile gauge and the profile should meet the
requirement in micron of surface as per RIL Painting specification.
F. After inspection it shall be released for paint application. A record should be
maintained for the entire activities.
G. Field joint coating (External of tank) where blast cleaning or portable
vacuum blaster is not possible, manual cleaning should be done (ST2/ST3)
H. Surface prepared shall be coated in the same day before any visible rusting
occurs. The time elapsed between cleaning & commencement of painting
shall under no circumstances exceed 04 (four) hours.
I. But in any case must commence before sign of degradation occur, Salt
contamination test (SCM-400) 6.13.3,6.13.6 of spec. to be followed Max.

temporary attachments are removed of welding joints.
C. After surface preparation and its clearance for the painting, the first coat of
primer shall be applied on the surface with the recommended primer as
application for the job as per the tender specification.
D. All edges, corners, webs and inaccessible areas shall be stripe coated prior
to full application to ensure integrity of WFT/DFT over surface areas. All
flanges serration, anchor bolt etc. shall be protected prior to painting.
E. The calibration certificates of all the measuring instruments, wherever
applicable shall be made available at site.
F. Base & Hardener shall be mixed in proper ratio as recommended by the
manufacturer.
G. Pump pressure, correct tip size, gun parts and outlets shall be clean and of
desirable size for its best results.
H. The paint application shall be done by brush/ roller or spray depending upon
the type and area application as per the manufacturers recommendation.
I. During application of paint there shall be strict adherence to the
environmental protection as applicable to the job.
J. Adequate precaution should be taken to prevent spattering and overspray of
paint over adjacent equipment, structures, steel well pipe, etc.
K. Damaged area of galvanized structures shall be feathered back to sound
coating. The area must be coated with a high zinc dust content galvanizing
