Looking back, my year at MBS

has been one of the most intense,

Our Multi-Competence Team Concept

One essential element of the MBA program is the team
experience. Therefore, the Multi-Competence Team
(MCT) concept is applied in all Mannheim Business
School programs. As the concept hinges on two basic
tenets for an ideal learning experience diversity and
continuity participants are assigned to heterogeneous teams at the beginning of their MBA experience. The Multi-Competence Teams stay together for
the duration of the program and work together on
their social as well as their team project. This forms a
major part of the learning process, as project management, intercultural competence and leadership skills
are of utmost importance to successfully complete the
joint project.
Your MBA is a time of self-exploration and your MCT
will help you make the most of this opportunity!

Learning in Practice
We believe that it is of utmost importance
for you to be able to apply the knowledge
you gain in the classroom to real business
issues. During the final term of your MBA
program you will put into practice everything you have learned in class for the
Team Project: Together with your MCT you
will act as consultants for an international company or develop your own business
plan. Here you will have the chance to
learn how to make decisions in the face of
complex data and tight deadlines and
defend your choices among your fellow
participants. This in-depth case-method
learning puts you in the role of the decision maker and will give you the confidence to embark on a truly international
business career.

The Social Project
Social Responsibility at the Core
Doing your MBA at Mannheim Business School involves far more
than taking classes in Financial Accounting, Corporate Finance
or Supply Chain Management. Business ethics and social responsibility have always been core elements of our schools educational concept. That is why the social project is an integral and
mandatory part of the Mannheim MBA curriculum.

Innovative Projects
The project should make a positive contribution to society on
some level. However, it is up to your individual team to define
the scope of your project, as it may pursue any number of goals:
educational, promotional, humanitarian or social. The social project puts your project management abilities to the test and allows
you to make a difference in the community. Past projects range
from art workshops for children treated at University Hospital
Mannheim over introductory internet classes for senior citizens
to a blood drive organized on campus.

What impressed me the most about the MBS experience was to become a part of a diverse group of highachievers. That is why I strive to be an active part of

way to do so is the Team Project which I initiated at

of all sizes and across various industries. In the course of your

One of the most exciting aspects of your learning experience at
Mannheim is to become part of a close-knit, inspiring and collab-

orative community of students and alumni. While you begin to

build your network in class, extracurricular activities will help you
to get to know fellow participants better. A lot of the MBS events
are open to students and alumni of all programs as occasions for
socializing and building lasting relationships.
Mannheimers are more than just fellow graduates; they are colleagues for life. To ensure a life-long learning experience to our
alumni, we offer events and conferences, such as the Mannheim

The Land of Entrepreneurs

and Inventors
Germany is not only the land of poets and philosophers, it is
also the home of a highly efficient and productive economy.
With a population of 82 million, Germany is the largest and most
important market in the European Union (EU) and one of the
four largest economies in the world. Given its high focus on exports, there is scarcely any other country that is as intertwined
with the world economy and interested in open markets as
Germany. Its share of total world trade is approximately nine
percent.
More than a thousand companies in Germany hold at least a top
three position in the world, which is more than any other comparable economy has to offer. It is not only the major corporations such as Siemens, Volkswagen, Daimler, Adidas, Allianz,
SAP and BASF that shape the German business environment,
but also tens of thousands of small and medium-sized internationally oriented enterprises.
According to the European Scoreboard, Germany is one of the
global innovation leaders and European champion with by far
the most patent applications of all European countries. Many
German inventions, such as printed books, cars, computers, chip
cards and the mp3-format, have changed the world, and Germanys inventive spirit is as strong as ever: The innovative capability of German business proved to be the driving force in
recovering from the recent economic crisis.
Due to this inventive spirit, Germany continues to be one of the
leading nations in several promising technologies. These include
biotechnology, nanotechnology, computer science and other
high-tech fields. Furthermore, the leading banking sector in
continental Europe is concentrated in Frankfurt/Main where
the European Central Bank (ECB), the German Central Bank
(Bundesbank) and Deutsche Brse, the national stock exchange,
are all headquartered.

In the Heart of German Business

50% of Germanys top 500
companies are located within
250 kilometers of Mannheim.

20

Living in Mannheim
At its core, the Mannheim experience is built around an intense
team experience. There are countless opportunities to get involved in student-led activities outside the classroom, such as
sports activities, German language courses, trips to museums
and exhibitions as well as student clubs and social events like karaoke nights, wine-tasting or student parties. They are a chance
to have fun, relax and make friends for life. As our alumni agree:
the MBA program is a bonding experience enabling you to build
a close-knit network of friendships that last a lifetime.
Situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers in one
of the sunniest regions of Germany, Mannheim offers numerous
possibilities to spend your leisure time: having a cup of coffee
in the courtyard of the castle, relaxing in the beautiful Luisenpark, cycling on the banks of the Neckar river, strolling through

the busy shopping streets with their cafs and bars or attending
cultural highlights on the culture mile with its museums,
galleries, concert hall, opera, ballet and theatre. As Mannheim
is situated at the heart of Europe, you can easily reach cultural
centers in Germany and beyond such as Heidelberg, Frankfurt,
Munich, Paris and Strasbourg.
Since its foundation as a city, Mannheim has been a special and
cosmopolitan place to live in. It stands out among other cities
because of the planned chess board arrangement of square blocks
in the city center (Quadrate). And the open-minded attitude of
the citizens of Mannheim allows new arrivals to feel at home after a very short period of time.
