Maruetsu, a subsidiary of United Super Market Holdings, engaged in retailing and related businesses.
The company operates a chain of supermarkets offering fruits, vegetables, sea food, meat, bread,
perishable food, dry groceries, household goods, clothes and personal accessories and various other
commodities. It also offers products under private store brand, maruetsu365. The company operates in
Japan, China and Hong Kong.
The company operates around 282 stores. It has 128 stores in Tokyo, 55 stores in Kanagawa Prefecture,
51 stores in Chiba Prefecture, 46 stores in Saitama Prefecture, and one store each at Tochigi Prefecture
and Ibaraki Prefecture.
Maruetsu's subsidiaries include the following: Maruetsu-Development Co., which is engaged in the real
estate management, store and shopping center development business; Marno Co., involved in the
general worker dispatching undertaking; Maruetsu Fresh Foods Co., involved in food procurement,
manufacturing and processing in fresh processing center; Marno Center Support Co., a subsidiary that
performs contract services such as machining center in fresh processing center; Food Quality Control
Center Co., engaged in the consignment of food quality, safety and health inspection; Japan Education
Center for Future Retailing, engaged in providing training focused on supermarkets; The Maruetsu (Hong
Kong), Co., Ltd.; and Maruetsu (Wuxi), which is engaged in retail management in China.

History
HISTORY
Maruetsu, formerly Uoetsu Shoten, was founded in Urawa Shi, Saitama, in 1945.
In 1965, the first self-service store of the company was opened in Omiya.
The company's name was changed to Maruetsu Store, Inc., from Uoetsu Shoten, in 1970.
In 1974, the company name was changed to Maruetsu, Inc., from Maruetsu Store, Inc., and the head
office was moved to Warabi-shi, Saitama.
The company was included in the second section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1977.
In 1978, the company merged with Premart, Inc. and became a supermarket chain with over 100 stores in
the Tokyo area.
Three years later, in 1981, the company merged with Sanko, Inc.
In 1984, the company joined the second section of the Osaka Stock Exchange.
In the following year, Zen-noh green grocery center, the main store and branches went online. In the
same year, Urawa processing center was opened.
The company opened Shiraoka fresh produce processing center in 1986. Also in the same year, the
company introduced and started the point of sale (POS) system.
In 1987, the company started issuing Maruetsu coupons. In the following year, first SSM model store was
opened in Kita Kashiwa and OMC card was introduced in all stores.
Maruetsu's head office was moved to Higashi Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, Tokyo, in 1989. In the following
year, daily food OT-DT system was started.
In 1991, the company opened hands-on health and food culture classroom 'EATPIA'. Two years later,
POS system was introduced at all the company's stores.
The company expanded Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottle collection stores in 1997. Two years
later, Maruetsu started the 'Maruetsu Internet Shopping'.
The company signed an agreement with Suehiro Co., Ltd. for joint capital and operations in 2001. Also in
the year, the first Foodexpress store was opened in Higashi Nippori by the company.
In 2002, the company acquired Pororoca, established Japan Education Center for Future Retailing, Inc,
and opened the 200th Maruetsu store.
The company signed agreements with Tobu Store Co., Ltd. and Marubeni Corporation for joint capital and

operations in 2003.
Maruetsu entered into an operations alliance with AEON Corp and Marubeni Corp in 2007. In the same
year, the company merged with Sunday Mart Co and Pororoca Co.
In 2008, Katidoki Rokutyoume Maruetsu opened a shop. In the same year, Pororokka Konan City Tower
store and Pororokka shop were opened.
The company opened Musashi-Urawa Maruetsu Naria (Musashi Urawa) stores at Saitama; 1000 Stone
Pororoca (junk) shop at Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo; and Asaka Maruetsu store in Asaka, Saitama Prefecture, in
2009.
In 2010, the company merged its Maruetsu, Maruetsu Petit and LINCOS stores. In the same year, the
company opened a room temperature distribution center at Yokohama, Yashio.
Maruetsu opened its 50th Maruetsu Petit store in 2011.
In 2012, the company opened a composite center. In the same year, the company formed a joint venture
with Suning Corp. in preparation for its expansion into China.
Also in 2012, The Maruetsu (Hong Kong), Co., Ltd was established by the company in Hong Kong.
In February 2015, the company delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange and was acquired by United
Super Markets Holdings Inc. After the acquisition, the company operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of
United Super Markets Holdings.
