Chapter 1 : Introduction
- Introduce thesis topic
- Thesis motivation; layout the problem with existing
technology/explain the need of carrying out research.
- Research objective
- Scope of work
- Brief explanation on the scope of thesis

Chapter 2 : Literature Review

- Report / layout other researches (from journal) that are relevance to your
research work.
- Compare other researchers Finding, Method, Result, etc.
- Indicates which method/design you have chosen / selected / adopted
from other researches and explain the reason why you selected the
method/design.
Example :
Four different method of
carburisation reported by
other researchers.
In my research, Molten salt
carburisation
is
chosen
because of low material and
process cost, easy to control
and uniform coating of
carbon.

Chapter 3 : Methodology
- Layout methods/design that you use in your thesis in details.
- The Method should be layout systematically according to your actual
method.
- Exp:
1. Materials and chemical indicates the type / purity / specification / model of
the materials and chemical.
2. Instrumentation for sample analysis state the model and explain briefly the
theory on how the instruments work. Example explain the theory how the
SEM could produce high resolution images.
3. Preparation of material or sample.
4. Experimental method indicates the parameter involves and how the
parameter being manipulated in each experiment.
5. Method of Analysis chemical/physical/mechanical analysis using specific
method or using instruments such as SEM, XRD, Hardness test, instron, etc.
6. Type of data record that will be recorded and compared graph/table/etc.

Chapter 4 : Results and Discussion

- In many cases Results and Discussion are combine in a single chapter.
-

Present your result in a way that is parallel to the methodology & the
objective you want to achieve.

Table & Graph presentation:

1) Similar table / graph size.

Chapter 4 : Results and Discussion

2)
3)
4)
5)

Similar graph / image scale

Similar colour/ non-colour
Always write a complete caption with enough information.
Always mention/quote the graph/table in your text.

Images in
similar
figure is
differentiate

1 micro
meter in
both figures

Figure is
label and
caption is
written with
sufficient
information

Chapter 4 : Results and Discussion

(5) label your images/graph where necessary

Chapter 4 : Results and Discussion

-

Discussion :
1) Introduce the individual table/graph (. .. Figure 1 shows a graph of voltage
versus time for sample electrolyse in sample )
2) Explain what you can see in the individual graph (fluctuation , increasing,
reduction or etc).
3) Interpret the individual table/graph presented (why/what/when/how the
graph fluctuate?)
4) Compare each graph with other graph with different parameter.
Explain the difference in the plots/results.
5) Support all result with finding from journal.
6) Always sure with your explanation, avoid using maybe

Chapter 5 : Conclusion
- parallel to the objective (answering the objective)
-

parallel to the methodology, results and discussion.

Figure and the text where the figure is

firstly quoted is preferably in the same
page. Figure could be place before or after
(preferably after) the quoted text
dont annoyed your examiner.

When you have to use the same figure in

different section/chapter, dont copy-paste
the same figure, you may just refer the
figure by quoting the figure number & the
chapter.
repetition of figures /graph will confuse examiner.

Draw simplified schematic diagrams .

easier for the examiner/supervisor to understand.

21/03/2013

Put picture / images as many as

you can.
avoid making your examiner &
supervisor sleepy.

When you do experiment, take

picture as many as you can.
you may realise that you could add it
in your thesis.

Make sure
your spacing
and section is
prominent, not
too crowded
and not too
spacious
dont confuse
your examiner &
supervisor.

Example 1 (4 pages)

Space
wasted

Example 2 (3 pages - same content)

do not leave big
spacing in the thesis
go green, save paper.

Learn to manipulate the spacing

Example 1 before adjusting
(setting: double spacing , with spacing before/after = 0 )

21/03/2013

Example 1 after adjusting

(setting: 1.7 spacing , with spacing before=6, after = 3, figure is cropped)
Notice that each paragraph is made prominent due to the before/after spacing.

unnecessary spaces in each pages can be minimized by

changing spacing and adjusting the size of table/picture
cheating in subtle way.
