You have full access to the features and operations that are available with Oracle Database, but
Oracle hosts the VM and cloud storage. And you can perform some database maintenance and
management operations with the easy-to-use cloud portal or command-line interface.

What You Get with the Oracle

Approach
You can perform all database
management and development
operationswithout purchasing and
maintaining hardware, without knowing
backup and recovery commands, and
without having to perform such complex
tasks as database software upgrades
and patching.
Unlike some competitors cloud
infrastructure products, Oracle
Database Cloud Service gives you full
administrative control of the service
(root OS and SYS database access).
You get full interoperability with your
on-premises Oracle databases.

For operations that you want to

automate, Oracle Database Cloud
Service lets you script and automate
complex problems that Oracle is trusted
to implement under the covers.
You get the familiarity and continuity
of your on-premises Oracle database
experiencewithout hosting and
installing your database (unless you
want to).
You can use your familiar Oracle tools
and applications to connect to the
database.
Experience extreme database
performance with unparalleled reliability
by using Oracle Database Cloud Exadata Service.

CPU and Memory Options

Virtual Image Option

You can choose a variety of configuration

combinations (number of CPUs and gigabytes
of memory).

With Oracle Database Cloud Service

(Database as a Service), you manage all
maintenance operations for the software
or the database. As part of the VM that
you provision, the Virtual Image option
includes the installation files for Oracle
Database and supporting software. You
set up the database yourself by running
Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA)
to your own liking.

Storage Options
You have storage capacity choices using Oracle
Storage Cloud Service.

11g or 12c Database Editions

You can easily provision database instances
with Oracle Database 11g or 12c. Choose
Standard Edition One, Enterprise Edition (no
Database Options), Enterprise Edition High
Performance (includes most Database Options
and Enterprise Manager packs), or Enterprise
Edition Extreme Performance (includes all
Database Options and Enterprise Manager
packs).

Oracle Database Cloud Service

(Database Schema)
If you simply need your own database schema
and dont require the full functionality of an
Oracle Database instance in a VM, Oracle
Database Cloud Service (Database Schema)
may be the cloud service for you.

Database Security
Oracle Database Cloud Service has rigorous security practices and procedures that are based on
decades of Oracle database experience.
What Is It?
Why Database in the
Cloud?

Its closed off and secure by default, but you have the flexibility to open network ports as needed.
To access the database in your VM, you can use port opening, SSH tunneling, SQL*Net, web
access, and more. And Oracle Compute Cloud Service security rules and lists give you flexible,
enterprise-level security.

Because you have full OS root and

SYS database access, you have full
administrative control of your VM and
your database via SSH, SQL Developer,
Data Pump, SQL*Plus, and other tools.

Manage
Fully manage your database or have
Oracle manage standard database
operations, such as backup, patching, and
upgrade.

Monitor
Many tools exist to monitor an Oracle
Database instance, including database
options directly accessible from Enterprise
Manager Database Express 12c and
Enterprise Manager 11g Database Control.
In addition to all the standard databasemonitoring tools, Oracle Database Cloud
Service includes a monitoring application
that resides on a Database Cloud Service
instances VM. This monitor provides a
wide spectrum of information about VM
resource usage and Oracle Database
status.

Familiar Oracle Tools

For database development, Oracle Database Cloud Service lets you use your familiar Oracle
Database on-premises tools, such as Data Pump and SQL Loader. For example, you can:

thousands of mission-critical sites worldwide.
Capacity on Demand. You can choose to run your Oracle
RAC database on 2, 4, or 8 database servers, coupled
with 3, 6, or 12 Exadata Storage Servers respectively.
Enable between 14 and 34 CPU cores on each database
server, and pay for only the CPU cores that you enable.
Rapid Provisioning. You can immediately take full control
of your dedicated, pre-built, fully functional Exadata
environment to deploy databases using Oracle Database
11.2.0.4 or 12.1.0.2. Oracle Database Grid Infrastructure

With Exadata Service, you get extreme Exadata performance and powerful technologies, such as multitenant databases, In-Memory Databases, Real Application Clusters (RAC), InfiniBand Fabric, Smart Flash
Cache, Smart Flash Log, and SQL off-loading to storage.

Zero Infrastructure Management

Backup and Recovery

Your dedicated Exadata environment is

automatically provisioned for you. Oracle experts
patch and maintain the hardware, firmware,
storage software, and hypervisor. When
convenient, you can run automated scripts to
patch the database software in line with your
application and workload requirements.

Exadata Service contains an automated backup

subsystem based on Oracle Recovery Manager
(RMAN). Backups can be stored locally on Exadata
storage in the Fast Recovery Area (FRA), or remotely
using Oracle Cloud Storage Containers (incurs separate
charges).

High Availability for Always-On Operations

Exadata Service provides full data protection,
consistency, transactional isolation, a fully
active RAC cluster, triple mirrored storage, and
redundant InfiniBand and Ethernet networks.

Mission-Critical Security
Strict security is enforced with InfiniBand
partitioning, database encryption, and the
use of virtual machines to isolate the Oraclemanaged hardware from your Oracle Database
implementation. By default, data is encrypted in
flight and at rest. Client access is via SSH, iPSec
VPN, and encrypted Oracle Net connections.

Hybrid Cloud Ready

Exadata Service is 100% compatible with existing
Oracle Databases. Automation tools are provided for
you to back up, patch, upgrade, and add databases to
ensure seamless hybrid cloud strategy implementation.

Flexible, No Risk Migration

You can perform logical migrations with Data Pump
and Golden Gate Replication to reorganize and
optimize your data. You can perform physical
migrations by using RMAN backups, Data Guard,
Transportable Tablespace or Transportable Database
technologies. You can also restore data from an Oracle
Database Cloud Service backup.
