to the community as an art
center. It is nonprofit - funded
through grants, sponsorships,

Lady Green, Kalida stay alive in tourney LOCAL ROUNDUP

with the Red and White getting
an easy victory.
Amazing how quickly things
change.
Lady Green turned the tables
Saturday in the opening round
of the Division IV sectional
tournament at Lincolnview
High School, eliminating the
Lady Wildcats 12-3.
In the opener Saturday,
Kalida went nine innings to
outlast Continental 3-0.
All four teams had to face
a heavy wind coming from the
west, blowing hard from left
field, making fielding fly balls
and pop-ups an adventure.
Jefferson coach Dave
Wollenhaupt felt the mindset
of both teams was the key.
“You had one team —
Ottoville — that was excited to
play from the start. They didn’t
let the weather bother them and
they were ready to go from the
start,” he explained. “You had
the other — us — and I knew
on the way over we were not
ready to play. The girls were
complaining about the wind
and everything else. That is a
bad sign. Ottoville was a differ-
ent team from when we played
them two weeks ago.”
Ottoville (2-16) jumped on
the Wildcats (5-12) in the top
of the first against Jefferson
starter Courtnie Rostorfer (5
2/3 total innings, 7 hits, 6 runs,
4 earned, 5 strikeouts) and
never looked back. With one
down, Kelsey Hoersten (2-for-

Hamlin smiles through pain

with each NASCAR win

DARLINGTON, S.C. —
Denny Hamlin has found the
perfect way to rehab his sur-
gically repaired knee — win-
ning NASCAR races.
Hamlin became the
first driver in 17 years
to sweep the Sprint
and held on while prime con-
tenders Jeff Gordon and Jeff
Burton made pit errors to fall
back.
It’s been a quicker than
expected recovery for an inju-
ry that may keep athletes in
at Darlington.
He led 111 of the 147 laps
in the Nationwide event, roar-
ing ahead of Busch over the
final five laps to capture his
second series win this year.
Hamlin again led the most
laps in the Southern 500
— 104 out of 367 — and
was again up front when it

the operating table on March
31 to fix a painful ACL tear
in his left knee.
Still, less than two weeks
later, Hamlin was back in
his No. 11 Toyota and bare-
ly missing a shift. Hamlin
says the racing helps with the
knee’s recovery.
“It really is like a physi-
cal therapy session in there,”
Hamlin said of the driver’s
cockpit. “With the car, you
have a little bit of vibration
right there on the steering col-
umn. I kind of rest my leg
against it.”
Plus, at Darlington, Hamlin
added a couple of therapeutic
winner’s burnouts.

teammate Kyle Busch to
take the Royal Purple 200 on
Friday night. At Saturday’s
Southern 500, Hamlin moved
to the front late in the race
stick-and-ball sports off the
field for months.
Hamlin injured his liga-
ment playing basketball.
After winning at Martinsville
on March 29, Hamlin knew
he couldn’t drive without
surgery. After the procedure,
many at Joe Gibbs Racing
held their breath about the
season ahead — especially
when Hamlin insisted jump-
ing back in when the series
went to Phoenix.
“We didn’t know if he was
going to make it the whole
race, maybe half a race, what
was he going to do,” JGR
team president J.D. Gibbs
said. “I think he went up a
few notches in my eyes (with)
the mental toughness.”

“Heck, knowing Denny, I
knew he would never even
think about getting out of the
car,” Ford said. “We just kind
of rolled with it.”

Sandbags to be used to try to block oil blobs

ON THE GULF OF MEXICO — Icy slush
foiled plans to use a giant box to contain the
uncontrolled oil gusher in the Gulf, leaving
BP pondering an alternate solution at sea,
while on land, helicopters were expected to
drop sandbags in Louisiana to guard against
thick blobs of crude that began washing up
on beaches.
On Sunday, in a waterfront yard in Port
Fourchon, La., a tractor-trailer dumped a load
of sand, which workers planned to pack into
5-cubic-yard bags. Once the bags are ready,
the Army National Guard will airlift them on
today to five spots along a four-mile stretch
of coastline between Port Fourchon and the
Jefferson Parish line, said Lafourche Parish
compliance officer Robert Passman.
“We want to block it off to where the
oil doesn’t get into the marsh areas,” said
Passman. “What they’re trying to do is just
prevent. I know it’s still east of here but
they’re just trying to do a little prevention.”
As for the solution at sea, BP PLC officials
said they were considering several options to
stop the daily rush of at least 200,000 gallons
of crude from a blown-out well a mile under-
water. BP PLC spokesman Mark Proegler
said no one has settled on what step the
company will take next, but a decision could
come by today.
BP said today that the oil spill has cost
the company $350 million so far. The tally
included the cost of the immediate response,
containment, relief well drilling, commit-
ments to the Gulf Coast states, and settle-
ments and federal costs.
The company did not speculate on the final
bill, which most analysts expect to run into
tens of billions of dollars.
With crippled equipment littering the
ocean floor, engineers from the oil company
— which is responsible for the cleanup —
scrambled to devise a fresh method to cap
the ruptured well. Their previous best hope
for containing the leak quickly, a four-sto-
ry containment box, became encrusted with
deep-sea crystals Saturday and had to be cast
aside.
Among the plans under consideration:
— Deploying a new, smaller containment
box in the hope that it would be less likely to
get clogged. Officials said the new box could
be in place by midweek.
“We’re going to pursue the first option
that’s available to us and we think it’ll be the
top hat,” the smaller box, BP Chief Operating
Officer Doug Suttles said.
— Cutting the riser pipe, which extends
from the mile-deep well, undersea and using
larger piping to bring the gushing oil to a drill
ship on the surface, a tactic considered diffi-
cult and less desirable because it will increase
the flow of oil.
— Shooting mud and concrete directly
into the well’s blowout preventer, a device
that was supposed to shut off the flow of oil
after a deadly April 20 oil rig explosion but
failed. The technique, known as a “top kill,”
is supposed to plug up the well and would
take two to three weeks.
The engineers appear to be “trying any-
thing people can think of” to stop the leak,
said Ed Overton, a LSU professor of environ-
mental studies.
An estimated 3.5 million gallons of oil
have spilled since an explosion on April 20
on the drilling rig, the Deepwater Horizon,
50 miles off the Louisiana coast. At that pace,
the spill would surpass the 11 million gallons
spilled in the Exxon Valdez disaster by next
month. BP is drilling a relief well that is con-
sidered a permanent fix, but that could take
months to complete.
Above the oil leak, waves of dark brown
and black sludge crashed into the support ship
Joe Griffin. The fumes there were so intense
that a crew member and an AP photographer
on board had to wear respirators while on
deck.
Philip Johnson, a petroleum engineering
professor at the University of Alabama, said
cutting the riser pipe and slipping a larger
pipe over the cut end could conceivably divert
the flow of oil to the surface.
“That’s a very tempting option,” he said.
“The risk is when you cut the pipe, the flow is
going to increase. ... That’s a scary option, but
there’s still a reasonable chance they could
pull this off.”
Johnson was less optimistic that a smaller
containment box would be less susceptible to
being clogged by icelike crystals.
“My suspicion is that it’s likely to freeze
up anyway,” he said. “But I think they should
be trying everything they can.”

Pressure mounts in Britain to form new government

election deadlock appeared
closer to resolution today
as David Cameron’s
Conservatives and their
potential ally, the Liberal
Democrats, reported prog-
ress in talks to form a new
government amid fears that
prolonged uncertainty would
rattle the markets.
But Prime Minister
Gordon Brown’s falter-
ing Labour Party also made
overtures to the third-place
wooing Nick Clegg and his
Liberal Democrats in hopes
of forming an alliance.
Cameron and Clegg met
face-to-face today as teams
of party negotiators tried to
hammer out a power-sharing
deal — and Clegg also met
separately with Brown.

ing in Cameron’s office this
afternoon. Asked if Cameron
would be prime minister
by Tuesday, lawmaker Des
Swayne, an aide to the leader,
said: “I hope so.”

caught between his circle of
reformers and the Tory old
guard, which blames him for

BAGHDAD (AP) — A suicide bomber blew himself up
outside a textile factory today in a crowd that gathered after
two car bombings at the same spot in the worst of a series of
attacks that killed at least 84 people across Iraq, the deadliest
day this year.
The violence added to fears that political uncertainty could
further destabilize the country. More than two months after the
March 7 elections, there is still no new government in sight and
the negotiations to form one could drag on for months more as
U.S. troops prepare to withdraw.
In the worst attack of the day, a suicide bomber with explo-
sives strapped to his belt blew himself up among a crowd of
people who were trying to help victims of two car bombs that
went off earlier outside a textile factory in the Shiite city of
Hillah south of Baghdad, said provincial police spokesman
Maj. Muthana Khalid.
At least 45 were killed and 140 wounded, said Khalid and
Zuhair al Khafaji, director of al-Hillah general hospital.
