Implementation of
GFSI Recognized Schemes
We ( Coca-Cola) asked our suppliers to implement the best available
food safety and quality management systems that are verified through
rigorous supplier quality audits and local technical supplier
authorizations.
All our primary packaging and ingredient suppliers must achieve
external facility audit certification to one of the Global Food Safety
Initiative (GFSI) recognized schemes (www.mygfsi.com)

Benefits PAS 223

1/Provides a common international methodology for developing a
prerequisite programme for food/drink packaging safety
2/Ensures confidence in food/drink packaging safety systems,
bringing consistency across global packaging industry practices
3/Is enabled for independent 3rd party assessments to be
undertaken if desired
4/ Assists organisations with the wider implementation of an ISO
22000 management system.
5/Broad international consensus and buy-in among packaging
manufacturers.

Scope of PAS 223

223
The PAS specifies requirements for establishing, implementing
and maintaining prerequisite programmes (PRPs) and design
requirements to assist in controlling food safety hazards in the
manufacture of food packaging
The PAS is applicable to all organizations, regardless of size
or complexities, that manufacture food packaging
Each organization is required to do a documented food
safety hazard and risk assessment that includes each
requirement
Where exclusions are made or alternative measures are
implemented, these need to be justified by the food safety
hazard and risk assessment
The PAS is not a management system and is intended to be
used in conjunction with BS EN ISO 22000, not in isolation
For the purpose of this PAS, the term food includes beverages

Notables of PAS 223

Can only be used in conjunction with ISO 22000

Not a management system
