Theupsidetoqualitativestudyisitprovidesanidealatmosphereforindepthprobingand
affordstheconveniencesofrecordinglargequantitiesofdataabouttheindividualsubject
somethinghardlyfeasibleforaquantitativestudyinvolvinghundreds,perhapsthousands,of
participants.
Typically,insocialorpsychologicalquantitativeresearchexperimentation,twogroups
arecreated,thecontrolgroup,andtheexperimentalgroup.Usually,inwelldesignedstudies,
everyeffortismadetokeeppotentialvariablesasconstantaspossibleinbothgroups.Thisisso
thatwhentheonevariablethatisbeingtestedisintroducedintotheexperimentalgroup,itiseasy
toaccuratelymeasurethedifferenceinoutcomebetweenthecontrolgroupandtheexperimental
group.
Ifascientificstudyisindeedwelldesigned,wellconducted,carefullydocumentedand

properlyinterpreted,itsresultscanbeextremelyvaluable.Thescientificstudyofsocialand
psychologicaleffectsofspecificcriteriacanhelptopointusintherightdirectionofwhatis
genuinelyeffectiveorineffective,helpfulorharmful,usefulorfruitlessandnotonlyinthe

thestudyisreceivedasgospel.Anditjustisntso.
Thereisatremendousamountofroomforerror,omission,erroneousconclusion,bias,

andsubjectivityinscientificstudies.Eventhemostthoroughlypreparedandcarefullycontrolled
experimentsendupnotprovinganything,butmerelysuggestingindications,trends,
tendencies,andthelike.Evenwhensomething,suchasamedication,isclinicallyprovento
beeffectiveinreducingspecificsymptoms,generallyitsforacertainpercentageofthose

involvedinthestudy,notfortheentireexperimentalgroup.

Forexample,apainrelievermaybeclinicallyproventoreduceoreliminateheadaches
in73%ofstudyparticipants.Thatmeansthat27%didnotgetreliefatall!Whichmeans,
althoughthedrugisclinicallyproventobeeffective,thereisa27%chancethatitwillnot

workatallforyou!
Thedarksideofscientificexperimentationisthattherearethosescientistswhowantso

itintothemainstream.Thetheoryisthatifyourpeers(otherresearchers)canconsistently
duplicateresultssimilartoyours,usingthesameresearchprotocolthatyouused,thenyour

Sciencemajor),includingastudyaboutstudies,andcametotheconclusionthatscientificstudies
inthepsychologicalandsocialsciencesdonotproveanything,butcan,ifwelldesignedand

Thedownsideoftestimonialevidenceisthatjustbecauseoneperson(orpersons)
believessomethingaccordingtotheirperceptions,values,principles,etcdoesntnecessarily

ofapproaches,theycanhypnotizeanyone.Ifallahypnotistknowsisoneortwotechniques,they
willonlybeabletohypnotizethesubjectsthathappentorespondtothosetechniques.
Itisfairtosaythateveryonerespondsdifferentlytohypnosis,anditisimpossibleto
determinewhowillrespondquicklyandwhowilltakesometimetohypnotize.Some
individualsarehighlysusceptibletohypnoticinfluenceothersarehighlyresistant.Thosewho

If,however,youspeakusingwordsthatareauditorychanneloriented,youwillmake

aninstantaneousalteredstate.Anystatethatiscommonorordinaryisnormalsuchaswhen

Nowallpeopleusealloftheiravailablesensestocreatetheirowninternalreality.But

mostofushaveafavoritesensethatweusemoreoftenthattheothers.MostpeopleintheUSA
aremoreinclinedtomakepicturesinsidetheirheadswhenthinking.WeintheUSliveina
highlyvisualculture.Butnotallpeoplearepredominantlyvisual.Somepeoplecreatetheir
