COURSE DESCRIPTION: the course is intended for students taking academic training at English-medium
universities. It is designed to aid students acquire a university-level vocabulary selected with cultural frequency
and taught with etymology as a reference point. The framework of this course etymology is the derivation of
English words from Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Each new word is presented in 3 (three)
different ways: in a definition, in a simple sentence, and in context. The course develops a system of logical and
organized thinking through a series of numerous vocabulary exercises and high-interest academic readings. It is
especially valuable for students whose purpose is to achieve professional advancement directly linked with the
scope and effectiveness of their vocabulary.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. To expand students vocabulary through word building exercises: synonyms, antonyms, and wordmatching;
2. To expose students to the real contexts of words in academic conversations and readings;
3. To improve academic reading rate and comprehension;
4. To teach students meanings of roots, suffixes and prefixes-the building blocks from which words are
constructed-to reinforce new vocabulary and improve spellings
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
On completion of this course students are expected:
1. To develop vocabulary learning as a skill and become more efficient in organizing, storing, and
remembering new vocabulary;
2. To acquire and retain over 2000 words including derived and related forms;
3. To be able to make an educated guess as to the meaning of an unfamiliar word;
4. To conduct words by putting together prefixes, roots, and suffixes;
5. To use the correct form of a word in sentences of their own

Comprehension of academic paragraphs through readings;
Engaging students in tasks which require them to use the target vocabulary;
Reinforcement vocabulary tests on spelling of words used in standardized texts

Assessment and % Weighting

Mid-term and Final Tests- 100 points
Passing Score: 60 points
Course grade is made up of mid-term and final scores added up and divided by 2.
