About the story

For the English language learner

Katie and Joe are new characters in the Rigby PM Plus

Story Books. They live with their mother. Their dad
sees them on the weekends. The children have gone
to the park with Dad for one of these special outings.

Brainstorm a word web about physical activities children

like to do at school, at home, at a park, or a playground.
Show pictures or pantomime as you model an example
such as I like jumping. My feet can go high.

Creating the atmosphere

Going beyond the story

Some children may have played on a

jumping castle at a shopping mall or an
amusement park. Talk about the fun
involved with this type of play equipment.

Have children role-play a variety of

physical activities, e.g., running,
jumping, hopping, skipping. Talk about
the way the body moves with each
activity. Invite them to draw pictures and
write matching captions.

Focusing on the story

Cover Talk about the setting and the
large inflatable jumping castle. Read the
title on the cover and again on the title
page together.
Pages 23 After reading the text, ask,
Why did the children want to play on
the jumping castle rather than on the
swings and slide?
Pages 45 Model Katies
disappointment as the text is read. Ask,
Why couldnt Katie and Joe jump on
the castle with the older children?
Pages 611 Discuss Joes caring attitude
toward his little sister.
Pages 1216 Encourage children to use
the punctuation as they read, and to read
with intonation that echoes Katies and
Joes excitement.

Paint a large mural of a park. Involve

children in this process. Have children
draw pictures of themselves playing on
the equipment. Assist them in writing
captions to attach to the mural.
Read, sing, and dance to On the bridge at
Avignon (Rigby PM Library, Readalongs).
Talk about verb endings. Use the words
help and helped as examples in sentences.

Developing specific skills

Using the blackline master

Use sw and sl (Rigby PM Library, Alphabet Blends)

to develop the sounds: sw swings, sl slide.
Exclamation point and quotation marks review
the punctuation symbols, names, and meanings.
Discuss the endings: played, looked, shouted.

Read the words in the shaded boxes .

Encourage children to read the sentences aloud,
saying the missing words before writing them in
the appropriate spaces.
Reinforce the importance of detailed illustrations.
