QUESTION 1 [15 marks]

Figure 1 shows a radio receiver with amplifier A and B cascaded together with total noise
figure of 3dB. The receiver is tuned to broadcast station at 91.5MHz with a bandwidth of
5MHz. The receiver operates at 28C and input resistance of 70. The received signal
voltage of 8.3V is applied to the amplifier A. The noise factor of amplifier A is 1. Assume
power gain is 5dB for both amplifiers. Given that Boltzmanns constant, K is 1.38 10-23
J/K:

Amplifier A

Amplifier B

[4 marks]

(b)

Analyze the signal quality in term of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as it passes

through the amplifier A and B. Justify your answer by calculation.

(a) Compare and analyze the two PCM systems above in terms of their dynamic range
and SQRdB for samples taken within the first 20 s. Determine which system
performs better and state your reason.
[15 marks]
(b) Due to some equipment limitation, you can only utilized linear quantization for
your PCM system. Design a new PCM codebook to achieve a SQR of at least 25
dB for the system. Determine the new dynamic range.
[10 marks]
(c) Based on your result in part (b), determine the output of the PCM signal for the first
FOUR samples and draw the digitized signal using unipolar encoding.

QUESTION 3 [25 marks]

A transmission system is being built to transmit a signal as shown in Figure 3 with bit rate,
fb = 100kbps. The transmission channel is band-limited to 250 kHz.

Figure 3
(a) Based on the transmitted output signal above:
(i)

Determine the type of digital modulation and draw the block diagram use
to generate waveform in Figure 3. Briefly explain how it works.
[4 marks]

(ii)

Find the carrier frequency.

[3 marks]

(iii)

Determine if the signal could cause any interference to adjacent channels.

Justify your answer.
[3 marks]

(iv)

If your answer in part (iii) is;

YES. Suggest a way to solve this problem. Justify your answer with
calculation

NO. Determine the percentage of bandwidth saving.

[3 marks]

(b) The transmission system is now being re-designed to achieve at least 3 times the
original bit rate while maintaining its bandwidth. Explain how this is done and
suggest new frequency assignments to transmit 100111001. Assume the new carrier
frequency equals to 500 kHz.

QUESTION 4 [30 marks]

(a)

The Global System of Mobile Communications (GSM) cellular phone is assigned

with frequency range of 880-915 MHz for the uplink and 925-960 MHz for the
downlink. These frequency spectrums are divided into 200 kHz band for each
channel. Each channel is then subdivided into time slots as shown in Figure 4.

Figure 4: GSM timeslots

i) What is the multiplexing technique used in GSM? Justify your answer.

[2 marks]
ii) How many users can access the GSM service simultaneously at one particular time?

[2 marks]
iii) What is the maximum data rate that can be achieved by the GSM service?

(b)

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is typically installed by medium or

large enterprises in many countries. The maximum data rate for ISDN is 1.520
Mbps that support multiple voice and data channels between the network and users.
Additionally, one synchronization channel is also needed for control and signaling.
Propose and design a suitable multiplexing system for the ISDN that meets the
following specifications:

Voice channel: band limited to 4 kHz, sampling at 25% higher than

Nyquist rate, encoded using 8 bits

Data channel: 40 kbps

Synchronization channel: 72 kbps

Determine number of voice and data channels to be supported. Present your design
using block diagram, showing at least one channel for each type of input channel.
Label all sub-components and specifications of the multiplexing system. State any
assumptions made.
[12 marks]

(i)

If voice channel of 5 kHz is allowed to enter the system, will it caused

distortion? Justify your answer by calculations.
[3 marks]

(c)

The signal to quantization ratio (SQR) of each voice channel in part (b) is now need
to be improved by 10dB. For each voice channel, analyze the performance in terms
of the new SQR and dynamic range. Determine the maximum data rate of the
system.
