The following will influence the

design of floor system

Column Size.

Maximum moment tranfer to column.

Maximum width of PT Beam.

Limiting moments transfer to column.

Minimum Column Size

Minimum Size of Column Requirement

will be at least 450mm x 450mm for the
PT Floor System.
If Column Size was less then 450mm x
450mm (or) Columns are Pre-existing
with lesser sizes. Column Capitals /
Brackets

for
better
Serviceability Condition.

For avoiding more Moment Transfer to Column, In General UTRACON

was limiting Mu/bd2 < 4 to 6 for columns.
If the Mu/bd2 was exceeding the range of 4 to 6, UTRACON was bringing
the notice of Consultants by clouding those columns.

STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY REINFORCEMENT

Need for the Stuctural Integrity:1. To avoid sudden failure and for delaying the
progressive failure.
2. To avoid the analysis for progressive failure.
3. To Minimised / Localised the Progressive
failure.

ACI 318-05 Structural Integrity Requirements

call for minor changes in detailing of
reinforcement No analysis is needed.
To enhance overall continuity, redundancy,
and ductility of a structure through minor
changes in detailing of reinforcement without impacting economy.

For PT Beam

For Twoway Slab

Minimum of two bars/wire has to pass through the Column and

should not be less then As per ACI 318M-08, CL 10.3 and CL
18.12.7.
A s t le s s e r o f:
1. For 10.3

2. For 18.11.2
The area of bottom reinforcement in each direction shall
be not less than 1.5 times that required by Eq. (10-3)
and not less than 2.1bwd/fy,
where bw is the width of the column face through which the reinforcement passes.

Typical Calculation
bw-1100mm;

fy-500 N/Sq.mm;

d-650mm;

fck-50N/sq.mm;

Drop Bottom Reinforcement inside the column As per ACI 318M -08 - CL 10.5
Ast min = 0.25 *f'c* bw *d / fy) - - ------ Eqn 10.3 Page 134
=0.25*Sqrt(50)*1100*650/500 = 2527 mm2
Where
bw= With of Column
d= Effective depth of Drop
Ast min = 535 mm2

--------- (1)

And not less than 1.4bwd/fy

=1.4*1100*650/500 = 2002
Ast min = 2527 mm2 --------- (2)
The minimum Reinforcement shall be of maximum value of (1) and (2) is 880 mm2
As per ACI 318M-08 Cl 18.12.7 Page 296

The area of bottom reinforcement in each direction shall not less the 1.5 times that required by Eq.
(10.3)
Ast of bottom reinforcement = 1.5 x2527 = 3790 mm2 ---------- (3)
The value (3) not less than 2.1 x bw x d/ fy
Ast = 2.1bwd/fy
Ast = 2.1 X 1100 X 650/500
Ast = 3003 mm --------- (4)
