Deer Select Board Members:
Like many public health organizations across the Nation, the Amberst Board of Health has turned its
attention to gun violence as a public heath issue as part ofits responsibility for protesting and promoting
‘the health ofthe residents of Amherst. Our research has revealed several areas in which we fee] we ean
hhave an impact through education and advecacy. Particular areas of eoncem include: role of guns in acci-
dental shootings by young children having access to improperly stored guns; guns and domestic violence;
and unintentional and intentional selF-inflicted gun wounds by troubled adults.
‘Our research has also revealed that thousands of top elected municipal officals inthe U.S. have engaged
‘with this issue though Everytown.org, a union of "Mayors Against llegal Guns" and "Moms Demand
‘Action For Gun Sense,” led by Michael Bloomberg, former Mayor of NYC.
‘The Board of Health respectilly requests that the Select Board review and consider signing the attached
‘Statement of principle in solidarity with all the other communities working to prevent gun violence and to
enroll with “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” so that we can access information and resources that it may
develop or make available. Note: Since Amherst does not have a mayor, we contacted “Mayors Against
legal Guns” and they indicated thatthe highest elected town office ean enroll us in iew of amayor. We
‘understand that the Chair ofthe Selest Board would meet that requirement
