Mechanics
Tutorial Practice Sheet #1
D R . DAMYA S OUAMI

The tutorial is 2 hours long. Tutorial sessions run Monday & Wednesday in rooms MP125 a, b, and c.
You will receive an email from your TA telling you which is your group.
During your first tutorial, you will solving most of these problems with your TA. Emphasis will be on
understanding how to approach physics problems
giving your answer using the proper units and proper significant digits
there will also be a bit of unit conversion, just to prepare you for tutorial # 2.
After that you will be asked to work in groups of 3 maximum, the groups will be assigned by your TA.
You will be working on solving the Tutorial Worksheet 1 problems, performing two experiments. This
tutorial worksheet will be marked and given back to you at the start of next tutorial. You will have 35
minutes to work on the paper and hand in your results.

A.

Free-Fall

Assume that the acceleration due to gravity is g = 10m.s2 , downwards.

1. The Edmonton High Level Bridge is 46.3 m above the North Saskatchewan River that runs below
it.
(a) If an object were dropped from the High Level Bridge, how long would it take to strike the
water below ?
(b) Now, if an object were thrown at 12.0 m/s [straight up] from the bridge, how high is the
object when it runs out of speed ?
(c) How high will the object be 1.5s after it is thrown ?
(d) How long would it take for this object to strike the water below ?
2. Toy hamsters sit arranged on a shelf that is 1.78 m above the ground.

(a) If one of the hamsters falls from the shelf, how long will it take to hit the ground ?
(b) How fast will the hamster be traveling when it hits the ground ?

B.

Forces of Gravity
1. The force of gravity exerted by Earth on a fully suited astronaut at Earths surface is 1870 N.
Consider the acceleration due to gravity on earth g = 9.8m.s2 .
a. What is the magnitude of the gravitational force exerted on her on Jupiter, where the acceleration due to gravity is 25.9 m.s2 ?
b. What is the magnitude of the gravitational force exerted on her on the Moon, where the
acceleration due to gravity is 1.6 m.s2 ?

C.

Blocks in an Elevator : Identifying forces

1. Three blocks are stacked on top of each other inside an elevator as shown in the figure below.
Assume the elevator is at rest.
Instructions : Be concise and precise. This is what Physics is about, Remember, we are looking
for simple explanations to phenomena.
a. Identify all the forces acting on the 2kg mass. Explain what these forces are and how they act.

D.

Linear Motion : Friction

1. Joanne drives her car with a mass of 1.0 103 kg at a speed of 21 m/s. Find a road friction force that
is need to bring her car to a halt in 10s.

E.

Circular Motion : Torques

1. Person B weighs 500N while person A weighs 1000N. the distance of person A from the center is
1 meter. How Haw far is peron B from the centre of the pivot if they are balanced ?

2. Determine the torque on a bolt, if you are pulling with a force of 200 N directed perpendicular to
a wrench of length 20 cm ?
