THE USING OF ADIWIYATA SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

AS THE SOURCES OF LEARNING ENGLISH

Learning english is not always done in the classroom. But we are as teachers can ask
our students to learn outdoor. Learning uses the texbook is the traditional way because
by using it our students can not develop their mind to follow the world development.
So, the existance of learning sources have the important role. We can use the
computers to access the knowledge by using the internet. The developing technology
has the main role in the education world today. Without it we can miss the chance to
get the important information from the world.
Talking about the sources of learning, actually we can take the benefit from
our surrounding at school to be the media of our teaching.
In SMAN 1 Gondangwetan has the beautiful environment. Many kinds of
flower create the beauty situation to be cool and calm. The existance of green house
makes our eyes fresh with the green colour in their leaves. Then, the healty canteens
which sell the healty food that contain of much vitamin. The green trees and the
beautiful song from the birds voice create the beauty situation. What SMAN 1
Gondangwetan does is to reduce the global warming and to keep the earth from the
distruction. Keeping the school environment well is one of the objectives of adiwiyata
school in SMAN 1 Gondangwetan Pasuruan.
So, why dont we try to use the environment in our school as the source of
learning english? First, for listening and speaking, specially for transactional and
interpersonal text which it can develop the ability of the students to listen and to speak
by using some expressions in the dialogue. We can use our school environment as the
topic of the dialogue. For example, the expressions are talking about asking and
giving the opinion, from these expressions, we give the topic to the students about the
existance of waste baskets at school. So, the students can ask and give the opinion
about the topic. From this, we can educate our students about how important to keep
our environment for this earth. Next, still in listening and speaking, in the monolog
text such as; descriptive, report, analytical exposition, hortatory exposition,
explanation, procedure and others, we can develop the sudents competence by
giving the learning material from the school surroundings. For instance, we ask the
student to explain or to tell or to report or to describe about the green house at school.
Then, in reading and writing, we may ask the students to write based on the generic
structure of the text and by using the topic that we give to them. For example, we ask
the students to write a report text and the topic is the canteens in SMAN 1
Gondangwetan. After that, we ask them to read the result of their writing in front of
the class. In the functional text, we are able to give the instruction to make the
warning boards to be put in the surrounding at school. All of the english learning
activities reflect the adiwiyatas behaviour.
So, to plant and to create the conciousness to the students about how important
the meaning of adiwiyata school is that by using the enviroment of our school as the
sources of learning. Now, who will keep the environment for this earth fate? The

answer is we must keep it for the next generation.
