Computerized Software
Program for Design of
Pavement Structures
AASHTO has developed a
computerized software program for
design of pavement structures,
DARWin 3.1, Design Analysis and
Rehabilitation for Windows. The
program is based on the 1993 Guide
for Design of Pavement Structures,
Volume 1, and incorporates both new
and rehabilitation overlay design
methodology and provides extensive
online help for all the inputs, as well
as the ability to perform life-cycle
cost analysis of designs. This version
contains improvements over the
original software released in 1991;
an enhanced user interface makes it
easier to access the products
extended facilities.
To obtain a product announcement or
further information on licensing the
DARWin 3.1 software, contact Jose
Aldayuz at 202-624-3610, or ERES
Consultants at 1-888-443-2794.

Pavement Deflection
Data Exchange: Technical
Data Guide
This guide is a device-independent
universal pavement deflection data
exchange specification. A universal
file format is essential because the
Federal Highway Administration and
individual state highway agencies
continue to develop large databases
of deflection data and other
pavement-related information.
Efficient exchange of data among
these agencies is crucial. Pavement
Deflection Data Exchange can
accommodate current and future
pavement deflection data needs.

Implementation Manual
for Quality Assurance
This second edition covers state-ofthe-art asphalt paving, plant operations, transportation of materials,
surface preparation, laydown, compaction, and quality control processes. It is aimed at field personnel
who are responsible for these
operationsboth contractor
personnel that does the work and
agency personnel that oversees and
inspects the work. 2000. Paperback.
219 pp.
SegregationCauses and
Cures for Hot-Mix Asphalt
Historically, segregation has been
measured on a subjective basis with
state inspectors determination based
on visual information only. This is
difficult because, particularly on
surface mix, problems due to
segregation may not appear for
several months. Visual observation
can identify only surface segregation,
leaving that below the surface
undetected. This report, jointly
published by AASHTO and the
National Asphalt Pavement
Association, addresses segregation
and how it can be eliminated to
ensure the production of high-quality
paving mixtures. 1997. Paperback.

NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION COMMUNICATIONS FOR ITS PROTOCOL (NTCIP)
AASHTO, working in partnership
with the Institute of Transportation
Engineers (ITE) and the National
Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), and with financial
support from the Federal Highway
Administration (FHWA), is leading
a national effort to develop and
mutually adopt the National
Transportation Communications
for Intelligent Transportation
Systems Protocol (NTCIP). The
NTCIP is a family of standards that
provides both the rules for
communicating (called protocols)
and the vocabulary (called
objects) necessary to allow electronic traffic control equipment
from different manufacturers to
operate with each other as a
system. The NTCIP is the first set of
standards for the transportation
industry that allows traffic control
systems to be built using a mix and
match approach with equipment
from different manufacturers.
Therefore, NTCIP standards reduce
the need for reliance on specific
The purpose of the NTPEP is to pool the professional and physical resources of the individual participating
AASHTO member departments and to focus those resources to test materials of common interest in order to
improve the cost-effectiveness of the participating department operations. In general, the type of testing
performed under the NTPEP will provide information to the member departments that will be used to evaluate
the acceptability of the materials for use in the respective departments. These test data may also be used to
compare the performance of similar materials.

International Orders
The most convenient and least
expensive way to order AASHTO
products from overseas is to order
online at our web site bookstore
(www.transportation.org) using your
credit card. If you use a credit card,
your bank will automatically convert
your sale from U.S. dollars into your
local currency, typically at a favorable
rate. Alternatively, you may fax your
credit card order to us in the United
States at 1-304-728-2171 or mail
your credit card order to us at the
address on the order form. If you are
not using a credit card, payment may
be made by check in U.S. dollars,
drawn on a U.S. bank.
Orders shipped outside the United
States and Canada are delivered by
air mail and require an additional 20
percent charge for international
shipping and handling. Please allow
34 weeks for delivery. To keep
shipping and handling charges to a
minimum, please note that it is our
policy to send your international
order as soon as all titles can be
included (no back orders.) To avoid
delayed receipt of an urgently needed
title, please order separately from
other publications.
