4.6

Circuit Breaker Ratings

As per QP standard ES.2.03.0001 RB Section 8.7, the CB rating for the protection of the
feeder cable is selected with the following criteria:

Rating shall be higher than the continuous load rated current.

Rating shall be lower than the cable ampacity which shall be sized 125% of peak load
(TPPL) based on load list schedule.(except motor circuit)

CB (overload) rating for motor shall be 250% of motor (or 250% largest motor FLA
plus remaining other motors FLA for group of motors) full load ampere to consider
for starting current. Refer to attached National Electrical Code NFPA -70, Table 43052 for motor Branch circuit breaker rating to be coordinated with motor starting.

For circuit breaker magnetic trip for short circuit protection shall be set at minimum
600%.The circuit breaker magnetic rating shall not be lower than the available short
circuit (KAIC) in the power distribution network as explained in following section.

For motor load the over load circuit breaker setting is 250% (as per NFPA-70) of the
motor full load ampere (FLA) if with direct-on-line(DOL) starter.
For motor with soft starter where the staring current normally between 3 to 4 times
its FLA, the overload thermal setting can be set at 175% (long time delay) and for
magnetic setting (short time delay) it can be set from 300-400% of motor FLA.
The trip settings shall be coordinated to allow motor starting current or locked rotor
ampere (LRA) which is 6 times the motor FLA in very short time to pass without
tripping the upstream circuit breaker
4.7

Cable Short Circuit Rating

Each cable short circuit rating shall be more than the available fault current in the nearest
upstream bus of MSB or DB where it is fed from.
The cable short circuit capacity or rating shall be higher than the available short circuit in kA
in the nearest bus. The available short circuit in different bus of proposed feeder pillar FP-5
& FP-7 from Medical Center & Office Canteen Building, located approx 250 meters away
from the New Facility were calculated and shown in attachment-3.
The short circuit capacity of cable can be calculated as follows:

Cable short circuit rating can be also found in Approved Vendors Cable Catalogue and can be
checked if adequate by trip/time curve characteristic of CB under the calculated fault level.
4.8

Continuous Operating Temperature

Each cable shall have continuous operating temperature less than the values below:

5.

70 C for PVC insulated cable

90 C for XLPE insulated cable

CALCULATION PROCEDURES
Cable calculation procedures are explained in the following sections. Calculation process was
done on excel format and the results are shown in the attachments.

5.1

Load in KW
Active load in kW is the initial input of the calculation which is taken from load list schedule
or from equipment schedule.

5.2

Power Factor
Power factor is another input data, and its estimated to be 0.9 if Power Factor Corrector was
provided or 0.80 for the cases where it is not known or when there is no power factor
corrector .

5.3

Active or Real Power

It is calculated as:
P= S
pf

DOC. NO.: RMPCUT4-2-12-0005

[1]

REV. # 3

CABLE SIZING CALCULATION

Where:
S is the Apparent Power (kVA)
P is the Active Power (kW)
pf is the Power Factor
5.4

Load Current
It is the load current consumption, calculated as:
Ib = P
3 V x pf

for 3-Phase loads

Ib =
P
V x pf
Where:

for 1 Phase loads

[2]

Ib is the load current in amperes

P is the real power (watt or kilowatt)
V is the rated voltage
Pf is the power factor
5.5

Length
It is an input data in meter for the calculations based on drawing layout plans.

5.6

Cable Current Carrying Capacity And Correction Rating Factors

Selecting and calculation of cable section in mm2 based on the current carrying capacity of
the cable cores is selected from BS 7671 Reference Tables with the application of correction
factors are hereunder explained as basis for the selection of the appropriate cable size.
Cable with minimum cable current carrying capacity according to load current shall
be selected from Table 4E4A (for thermosetting multi core cable XLPE/PVC rated
90C) and appropriate correction rating factors (C) shall be applied as mentioned in
section 4.4:

The following Correction Rating Factors are taken from BS 7671 Tables:

Ca for variation in ambient temperature in 50 C from Table-4B1.

DOC. NO.: RMPCUT4-2-12-0005

REV. # 3

CABLE SIZING CALCULATION

5.7

Cag for variation in ground ambient temperature in 40 C from Table-4B2.

Cs for variation in soil resistivity from 2.5 K.m/W Table-4B3.

Cg1 for group of cables inside cable ladder or tray from Table -4C1.

Cg2 for group of cables in ground direct burial 0.7meter depth from Table -4C2.

Cg3 for group of cables inside conduit/trench 0.7meter depth from Table C3.

Ct is equal to Ca x Cs x Cg

The de rated cable ampacity is calculated = maximum load current / Ct

The de rated cable ampacity shall be higher than the load current (Ib).

Number of cores
For all feeder cables, multi core cables will be used for MSB, DB and equipment feeder
cables.

5.8

Runs per Phase

More than one run of cable per phase was used in some cases where the current is too high to
be carried by only one cable. The current carrying capacity will be the capacity of one core
multiplied by the number of runs after application of the de rating factors mentioned above.

5.9

Cable Voltage Drop Calculation

For AC circuits, this value is referred from based on BS 7671 Table- 4A4B for mostly multi
core cable :
Vd

= mv x I x L
1000

[3]

Where,
Vd

= Voltage Drop

mv

= Voltage drop in mv/A /m

Ib

= Maximum Load Current

= Length of cable in meter

Actual voltage drop in % for each 3 phase circuit is obtained as follows:

% Vd = Vd
V

x 100

DOC. NO.: RMPCUT4-2-12-0005

[4]
REV. # 3

CABLE SIZING CALCULATION

Where,
V is the rated voltage of the circuit (415V for 3- phase and 240V for 1-phase)
Voltage drop shall be lower than the values indicated in paragraph 3.5.and the overall
voltage drop from transformer to the last load in the circuit shall be not more than 5%.
5.10

Starting Motor Voltage Dip

Cable sizing for big motors must be checked in order to fulfill maximum allowable voltage
dip of 20% in motors terminals during startup as per ES 2.03.0001RB section 8.5.2. Circuits
in this calculation that feed motor loads directly are also provided with voltage dip
calculation with power factor at 0.3 during motor starting and summarize at Table- 7.
To calculate voltage dip during the starting of motors, the same formula as in 5.10 will be
used. The current (I) used for the calculation will be the starting current (600%) of the motor
full load current (FLA) with

DOL starter. The objective is to ensure that no power

fluctuation will happen during the starting of big motors like those from package AC units.

6.0

CONCLUSION
Referring to the Cable Calculation result summary, it can be concluded that the type, numbers
and size of cables shown in Single Line Diagram in Sub main switch board Details Drawing
No. RLB42-9-EJ-0001 are adequate and safe for installation that meet the document objective
according to client requirements and given standards.
