CONTRACTOR RESPONSE
The Cable sizing of Feeder Pillars have been revised as per actual load based
on the revised drawing of RMPCUT4-2-72-0002 Rev-C ( External Lighting
Feeder Pillar schedule).
The incoming cable of FP -05 with 4C x 95 sqmm has been verified by
changing the length of cables from 250m to 300m as per site condition.
(Refer Page No 17 to 18).
The incoming cable of FP -07 with 4C x 95 sqmm has been revised and
verified as 4C x 25sqmm by changing the length of cables from 315m to
350m as per site condition.
(Refer Page No 20 to 21).

OBJECTIVE
New EPIC contract was awarded to MTC for MPAC Phase 4 by the client Qatar Petroleum
located at Ras Laffan ,Qatar. This calculation is for Feeder Pillar FP-5 & FP-7 for external
works.
This cable calculation shall be the basis to check the adequacy of the cable type and size
selected as shown in the FP-5 & FP-7 of External Works.
2.
SCOPE
The cables calculated and included in this documents scope are the following:
3.
All incoming feeder cable for FP-5 & FP-7 located in external Landscape area.

DESIGN CRITERIA

REV. # 3

4.2
Cable Lengths
Estimation for cable lengths in meter is taken from following layout drawings:
4.3
4.4
Voltage Drop
As per QP standard ES.2.03.0001 RB, the maximum per cent voltage drop(%VD) under
steady state of cables shall have the following ideal values:
2.5%
5%
1%
4%
However, cables for above each section can have %VD more than the maximum ideal values
provided the total %VD of all sections is less 5% from source to the farthest circuit.
For starting motors, maximum voltage drop at the motor terminals shall not be higher than
20% as per QP standard ES.2.03.0001 section 8.5.2.
4.5
The maximum cable size shall be 240 mm2 and the minimum to be 2.5 mm2.
REV. # 3
4.6
Rating shall be lower than the cable ampacity which shall be sized 125% of peak load
(TPPL) based on load list schedule.(except motor circuit)
CB (overload) rating for motor shall be 250% of motor (or 250% largest motor FLA
plus remaining other motors FLA for group of motors) full load ampere to consider
for starting current. Refer to attached National Electrical Code NFPA -70, Table 43052 for motor Branch circuit breaker rating to be coordinated with motor starting.
For circuit breaker magnetic trip for short circuit protection shall be set at minimum
600%.The circuit breaker magnetic rating shall not be lower than the available short
circuit (KAIC) in the power distribution network as explained in following section.
For motor load the over load circuit breaker setting is 250% (as per NFPA-70) of the
motor full load ampere (FLA) if with direct-on-line(DOL) starter.
For motor with soft starter where the staring current normally between 3 to 4 times
its FLA, the overload thermal setting can be set at 175% (long time delay) and for
magnetic setting (short time delay) it can be set from 300-400% of motor FLA.
The trip settings shall be coordinated to allow motor starting current or locked rotor
ampere (LRA) which is 6 times the motor FLA in very short time to pass without
tripping the upstream circuit breaker

CALCULATION PROCEDURES
Cable calculation procedures are explained in the following sections. Calculation process was
done on excel format and the results are shown in the attachments.
5.1
Load in KW
Active load in kW is the initial input of the calculation which is taken from load list schedule
or from equipment schedule.
5.2
Power Factor
Power factor is another input data, and its estimated to be 0.9 if Power Factor Corrector was
provided or 0.80 for the cases where it is not known or when there is no power factor
corrector .
5.3

Where:
S is the Apparent Power (kVA)
P is the Active Power (kW)
pf is the Power Factor
5.4
Load Current
It is the load current consumption, calculated as:
Ib = P
3 V x pf
Ib =
P
V x pf
Where:
[2]
Length
It is an input data in meter for the calculations based on drawing layout plans.
5.6
The following Correction Rating Factors are taken from BS 7671 Tables:
REV. # 3
5.7
Cg1 for group of cables inside cable ladder or tray from Table -4C1.
Cg2 for group of cables in ground direct burial 0.7meter depth from Table -4C2.
Cg3 for group of cables inside conduit/trench 0.7meter depth from Table C3.
Ct is equal to Ca x Cs x Cg
The de rated cable ampacity shall be higher than the load current (Ib).
Number of cores
For all feeder cables, multi core cables will be used for MSB, DB and equipment feeder
cables.

CONCLUSION
Referring to the Cable Calculation result summary, it can be concluded that the type, numbers
and size of cables shown in Single Line Diagram in Sub main switch board Details Drawing
No. RLB42-9-EJ-0001 are adequate and safe for installation that meet the document objective
according to client requirements and given standards.
