1 Introduction to Flexi Zone Micro BTS

TheFlexiZoneMicroBTSissecondgenerationsmallcellBTSoptimizedforanoutdoor
micro-cellenvironment.Theproductdesignutilizesasmallcellspecificradioarchitecture
basedonaRadioFrequencyIntegratedCircuitdevice,andanintegratedbaseband
processingsolutionthatenablesfeatureparitywiththeFlexiMacroBTSsolutions.
ThemainapplicationofthisBTSistohelpdeliveranimprovedmobilebroadband
experiencebyenhancingcoverageandcapacitybothoutdoorandindoor.Thanksto
smallsizeandfanlesssolutiontheBTScanbeusedinpicocellapplications.Itcanbe
deployedonastreetlevelandrooftoptocovertraffichotspotsortofillnetworkcoverage
holesaswellasimprovecoverageinsidebuildings,forexampleatairportsandrailway
stations.
TheFlexiZoneMicroBTSprovidesfunctionalitydefinedby3GPPforaneNodeBand
supportsstandardnetworkinterfacestoothernetworkelements,thatisS1andX2.
Theperformanceoftheproductisdefinedinawaythattheair-interfaceistheonlything
whichlimitsthethroughputfortheLTEimplementation.TheHWplatformsupportsfull
throughputcapabilityofa5,10,15,or20MHzLTEFDDcarrierswith2x2MIMO(LTE
mainanddiversitytransmit).ThephysicaltransportinterfaceisoptimizedforIPbased
transportsolutions.Furthermore,theBTSsupportsvaryingtransmitpowerfrom250mW
to5Wperantennabranch.

remotelythroughNetAct.
TheFlexiZoneMicroBTSfeaturesaninternalBluetoothmodulewhichconsistsofan
on-boardBluetoothtransceiverprovidinga78channelEDR2.1compliantBluetooth
interfaceusedforremoteMMIandmaintenanceoperations.AllrequiredSWisloaded
andinstalledtotheFlexiZoneMicroBTSBluetoothModuleaspartoftheoverallFlexi
ZoneMicroBTSproductsoftware.ContactNokiaSolutionsandNetworksforadditional
details.
BTSautomaticallydetectsSWversionnumber,HWproductcode,versionnumberand
serialnumberduringthestart-upandthisdatacanberetrievedremotely.BTS
supervisesitsinternaloperation,sothatanymalfunctioningorloss-of-serviceisdetected
andreportedtonetworkmanagement.
Software updates
NewSWversionscanbedownloadedwhileBTSisworking.Thesoftwarecanbeloaded
eitherlocally,withtheBTSSiteManager,orremotelyfromNetAct.Sitevisitsare
unnecessaryforroutineoperationandmaintenance(O&M)tasks.
Typically,localsoftwaredownloadisdoneonlywhentheNetActconnectionismissing,
forexample,duringthecommissioningprocess.Softwarecanbedownloadedasa
backgroundoperationwithoutinterruptingtheBTSoperation.Thenewsoftwarecanbe
activatedatanytime.Rebootisrequiredinordertoputthesoftwareintouse.
TheBTSonlyusesdownloadablesoftware.Allsoftwarecanbedownloadedand
updatedfromNetAct.Thisprocedureiscentralized,meaningthatseveralBTSscanbe
upgradedwiththenewsoftwareeithersimultaneouslyoronebyone.
TheBTSkeepsthecurrentandprevioussoftwarepackagesinitsflashmemory.Either
ofthesesoftwareversionscanbeactivatedatanytime.Updatedsoftware(currentand
previous)intheBTScanbeseenthroughBTSSiteManager/NetAct.

8 Safety for Public and Workers

8.1 Installing base stations to ensure public safety
Theequipmentgeneratesradiofrequencyenergy,whichhasathermaleffectwhen
absorbedbythehumanbody.Forthisreasoncomplianceboundariesspecifictothis
equipmenthavebeenestablished.Thethermaleffectsofradiofrequencyenergycan
exceedsafetylevelswhenapersonisinsidetheestablishedcomplianceboundaries.
Observethecomplianceboundary,andmakesurethegeneralpublichasnoaccessto
areasinsidetheestablishedboundaries.

8.2 Installing base stations to ensure installer safety

Installationengineersneedtobeawareofthepotentialriskofthethermaleffectsofradio
frequencyenergyandhowtoprotecthim/herselfagainstunduerisk.
Whenworkingclosetotransmitterantennas,thepropersafetydistancesmustbe
observed.Theminimumsafedistancefromanantennaismeasuredinmeters.When
assessingtheapplicablecomplianceboundaries(CB)EuropeanstandardsEN50383,
EN50385,CouncilRecommendation1999/519/ECandFCC47CFR1.1310for
generalpublicelectromagneticexposurelimitshavebeenapplied.
Theantennatypesandgainactuallyconfiguredontheproductdeterminetheminimum
safedistance.FlexiZoneMicrosmallcell,iscompliantwiththecitedstandardsatevery
pointoutsidetheFINALboundary(CB)whentheFlexiZoneMicroBTSisdeployedwith
NSNprovidedantennasconnecteddirectlytotheFlexiZoneMicroRFports.
Consultsiteengineeringplanforanyotherconfigurations.
Provisionsmustbetakentoguaranteethatnopublicaccessispossibletoregionswithin
