B. Motivation
A while back class, before you entered the
room, you were given a colored paper right?
:Yes, Sir!
Okay, from that colored paper class,
we will make a magic.
I said magic class because, we are going
to use that colored paper to understand
better our lesson. So, everybody, you hold
colored papers, and then fold it, how
many rectangles did you form?
From one fold, let us make another fold.
How many rectangles do we have now?
Class, I want you to write the numbers
of rectangles after folding several times, okay?
Thank you class!, now let us continue
folding the paper and count the numbers of
rectangles formed. How many rectangles
do

(students will react curiously)

:2, Sir!
:4, Sir!
:Yes, Sir!

we have now?
:8, Sir!
Very good!, let us fold the bond paper
again class. Now how many rectangles do we
have?
:16, Sir!
Youre doing good class, continue folding.
How many rectangles do we have now?
:32, Sir!
Very good! Thats enough, now
Who among you can tell the number of rectangles
we made from each fold?
:2, 4, 8, 16, 32, Sir!
Precisely! , very good. So we have
2, 4, 8, 16, 32
Now look and observe the set of numbers
class,what can you say?
:Each number Sir is
obtained by
multiplying 2 from
the preceding number.
Excellent!, we obtained each proceeding
number by multiplying 2 to the preceding term.
C. Development of the lesson:
A while back, I told you that from the short
bond paper you are holding will come our next
lesson, it is actually true class because the
number of rectangles that we made from each
fold is a sequence or progression of numbers.
A sequence is a succession of numbers.
Each number is called a term.
Since we discovered that the terms were
obtained by multiplying 2 to the preceding term,
who can give me now the next four terms of
the sequence;
2,4,8,16,32,__,__,__,__?
:64,128,256,512
So we have now the sequence;
2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512.
In mathematics this sequence of
numbers is what we call the geometric sequence.
(flip the numbers)
The number that we multiply to each
term to obtain the next term is what we call
the common ratio.
Based from the sequence that we have
obtained, who among you can give me his/her
simple definition of geometric sequence?
:Geometric sequence
is a sequence with common
ratio .

Brilliant idea _______. Thats a very

simple but brilliant definition.
To elaborate what _______ said.
Geometric sequence class is a sequence in
which a term is obtained by multiplying the
preceding term by a constant number, called
the common ratio, r.
Let us examine deeper the characteristics of a
geometric sequence.
Suppose we have a geometric sequence
2,4,8,16,32,64
What is the common ratio (r) of this sequence?
a =2
Since 1
, would you fill in the blanks?

:2, Sir!

( 2)
a2 =
( 2)
a3 =
(2)
a 4=
( 2)
a5 =
(2 )
a6 =
a2 = 2(2)
a3 = 4(2)
a4 = 8(2)
a5 = 16(2)
a6 = 32(2)
Very good!
In terms of a and r, what is a2?
In terms of a and r, what is a3?
In terms of a and r, what is a4?
In terms of a and r, what is a5?
In terms of a and r, what is a6?
What can you observe regarding the
values of each term in terms of a and r?

a2 = a1r
a3 = a2r ; a3 = (a1r) r= a1r2
a4 = a3r ; a4 = (a1r2)r= a1r3
a5 = a4r ; a5 = (a1r3)r= a1r4
a6 = a5r ; a6 =( a1r4)r= a1r5

: The first term (a1) appears

every single time.
Excellent!
What else can you observe, class?
Exactly!
Therefore, how do you express an in terms
of a1 and r?
Very good!

: The exponent of r is always one

less than the numbers of terms.

: an = a1r(n-1)

This is actually the general term of a geometric

sequence.
Lets have a closer look at the formula
an = a1r(n-1)
What does a1 represent?
Very good!
What does r represent?
Very good!
What does n represent?
Very good!
What does an represent?
Very good!
For better understanding of the usage of the
formula, lets have an example.
1. Suppose we want to find the 10th term
of the geometric sequence 2, 4, 8
what would it be?
a
In the given problem, what is our 1 ?

To be able to find for our

a10

:The common ratio.

:The number of term.
: The nth term.

:2, Sir!

How about our r or common ratio?

Very Good!..lastly what is our n?
So let us now solve since we
a
have the value of our 1 , r and n.
The missing term here class is our

:The first term.

:2, Sir!
:10, Sir!

a10

let us

substitute the values of the given terms.

So we have,
: an = a1r(n-1)
a1=2, r = 2, n = 10, a10= ?
a10= 2(2)10-1
a10= 2(2)9
a10= 2(512)
a10=1,024
Lets have another example.
2. Suppose we want to find the 6th term
of the geometric sequence 3, 9, 27,
what would it be?
Who wants to solve it on the board
using the formula for nth term?

an = a1r(n-1)
a1= 3, r=3, n=6, a6=?
a6= 3(3)6-1
a6= 3(3)5
a6= 3(243)
a6= 729

Therefore the 6th of the

geometric sequence 3,9,27...
is 729.
Very good!
3. Find a1 in a geometric sequence whose
common ratio is 3 and 5th term is 324.
Let us write down the specified
value of the terms first before we solve.
What is the unknown?

What is the value of r?

Precisely!
What is the value of our nth term (an)?
Very good!
What is our n?
Very good!
Who can now solve on the board,
Using the formula and values of the
given terms?

: The unknown is the

first term (a1), Sir!
:3
:324
:5

:an =324, r=4 , n=5, a1= ?

:an = a1r(n-1)
324= a1(3)5-1
324= a1(3)4
3
24= a1(81)
324
81
=a1
81
81

( )

a1= 4
Excellent!
4. Find r in a geometric sequence whose
first term is 2 and the fourth term is 54.
Let us write down the specified
value of the terms first before we solve.
What is the unknown again?

:The unknown is the

common ratio. Sir!

Excellent!
Now what is the value of

a1

:2, Sir!

How about 54 class?

:The nth term (an) Sir!

What is our n?

:4, Sir!

Very good, who can now solve on the board,

Using the formula and values of the given terms?
an = a1r(n-1)

54=2(r )41
3
54 2(r )

2
2
3
27 = r
3 27 =

3 r 3

r=3
Excellent!
With that, I think you are now ready
for the activity that I have prepared
for you this morning.
D. Application: (Activity sheet- attached at the back)
Now you will have a
group activity entitled Treasure Hunt.
This game is not literally hunting treasures. Rather it is a game wherein you will have to
find the code of a padlock , for you to be able
to unlock it and get the treasures inside the box.
You have to work as a group. The
color of the paper you are holding a while back
will determine your group. Meaning those who are
holding the white one, will be group 1 and
those who are holding yellow will be group 2.
Our mechanics for the game class is,
you will be given 3 problems to answer. And what
ever answers that you will get on the problems, will
be used it to unlock the treasure box. Each group
should have a leader to unlock the treasure box.
For example if I got 7 as an answer in #1,
5 for #2 and 9 for # 3. I will use 759 as my code, then
I will press 759 to unlock the treasure box.
Okay did you understand?
So group leader please get your activity sheets.
Now you work as a group and dont make noise.

:Yes, Sir!

E. Valuing:
(after each group has already unlocked
the treasure box, they will find a heart inside the box.
Other than the chocolates, what else did you see inside?
:A heart, Sir!
Now class, what comes out in your mind when
you see this figure-the heart?
:Love, Sir!
Precisely!! And this month is the love month
wherein you can express deeply your love to your
loved ones.
How will you show your love to them?
:By taking care
them and value them
in our hearts.
How sweet, to show love is by taking care
of them and of course respecting them too.

F. Abstraction:
Let us look at the important points
of the lesson today.
What kind of sequence have you learned?
What is a geometric sequence?
How are you going to find the
common ratio, first term and nth term
of a geometric sequence?
How do we solve using the formula?
In your daily lives, do you also have
Sequences of the things you do?

:Geometric sequence
: Geometric sequence
is a sequence with
common ratio
:By using the formula
an =a1 r n1
:By finding the value of the
specified terms and substituting it in the given formula.
: Yes, Sir!, just like the
things that we do when we
woke up in the morning and
go to bed at night.

Precisely!
IV.
