CHAPTER 3

Objective:
To convert the coverage into shapefile
To examine the data structure.

To create a geodatabase and import shapefile in to it.

To coverage with built-in regions and route subclass.

To convert data into a digital elevation model (TIN).

Task 1: Examine the data file structure of coverage and shapefile

Summary
For task 1, it shows the data layers such as label, polygon, arc and tic. It also ask to convert the
coverage into a shapefile and examine the shapefiles data structure.
Outcomes

Figure 1: End product for task 1

Question 1:
For coverage, it can store many type of data. This concept same to feature data set and feature
class. For shapefile, it has single data only.
Question 2:
System that involve are feature class and dbase

Task 2: Create geodatabase, feature dataset and feature class

Summary
For task 2, it ask to create a file geodatabase and a feature dataset. Geodatabase is created and
name as Task2.gdb and for new feature dataset, we named it as Area_1 and the projected
coordinate system is UTM, NAD 1927, ZONE 11. This coordinate system is shared by all feature
class in Area_1. Next, import the shapefile intointo the feature dataset as feature classes and
examine their data file structure. A standalone feature class and feature class in a feature dataset
cannot use the same name and the name must be unique.
Outcome

Task 3: Convert a shapefile to a personal geodatabase feature class

Summary
In task 3, the data will be update the area and perimeters value of shapefile by converting it into a
feature class in a personal geodatabase. The personal geodatabase is rename as task3.mdb.
Outcome

Question 3:
Other than shapefile, raster and table also can be imported to a geodatabase.

Task 4: Examine polylines with measures

Summary
In task 4, we need to identify the route location or we need to examine the polyline shapefile.
When we click the route, the coordinate will appear.
Outcome

Question 4:
No

Task 5: View regions and routes

Summary
For task 5, it ask to view the regions and route subclasses that reside in hydrography coverage.
New data frame is created and named as nhd1 and nhd2 then add shapefile data into the
frame. The layer can be converted in nhd which is known as coverage layer into a shapefile or
geodatabase feature class.
Outcome

Question 5:
Yes
Question 6:
Yes

Task 6: View TIN

Summary
In task 6, it ask to prepared TIN from a digital elevation model.
Outcome

Question 3
For coverage, it contains only feature data class and not features dataset. If the shapefile uses
area in the coverage, only the area shapefile will be show. If the features, contains in the
geodatabase the geodatabase can contained many feature data set.
