Principles of Operation
CyScan is a high performance local position reference
sensor specifically engineered for marine vessel control
applications. It can serve as a primary or back-up sensor
and is applicable to virtually any type of vessel.
The CyScan system comprises a scanning laser based
sensor, a power supply unit and associated control and
data display application software which runs on a
conventional PC platform. The sensor is suitable for
permanent or semi-permanent installation as an integral
part of a dynamic positioning system.

CyScan can be used with single or multiple reflective

targets. The use of multiple targets with assigned identity
gives full use of the system's sophisticated tracking and
navigation capabilities. These give high immunity to false
reflections and allow uninterrupted operation even when
targets are temporarily obscured. Multiple target
operation also produces relative heading data to allow
automatic station keeping, even between two moving
vessels. Single target operation is available for
applications where only one target can be used and where
range/bearing (without heading) data is acceptable.

Ease of user operation is further enhanced by a number of

advanced features:
AutoSurvey is a function which automatically analyses and
stores the target positions of a new location for immediate
and future use.
DraftFollow is a function which compensates for changes
in draft when a vessel loads or unloads in relation to a
fixed mooring point. This allows CyScan to keep the
targets in optimum view.

Positional Data Scatter Plot (2 hrs)

The laser rotates at 360/sec to accurately measure the

distance (range) using 'time-of-flight' and direction
(bearing) using an internal encoder, to passive retroreflective targets. The targets are fixed at convenient
locations on the platform or other target vessel. Position
data is continuously transmitted to the vessel control
system via an industry standard electronic interface to
allow station keeping or pre-set course navigation.

CyScan can cope with:

Components
The rotating sensor head contains a pulsed eyesafe
divergent laser emitter and associated photo-diode
detector. The optical design typically gives a usable range
of up to 800m and positional accuracy of better than 0.5%.
An embedded microprocessor takes the optical sensor
outputs to calculate range, bearing and vessel position
relative to the known reflective target(s). This data
together with advanced real-time system diagnostics is
displayed via the control and display software running on
a conventional Windows XP platform.

Active Wave Motion Compensation

A dual-axis levelling platform automatically compensates
for vessel movement due to wave motion. This ensures
that the rotating scanner is able to track the reflective
targets even in difficult sea-states. The levelling system is
microprocessor controlled and takes inputs from three
precision gyros and two tilt sensors.

Spurious or erroneous reflections i.e. false returns

Object clutter

Missing reflections from targets which are

temporarily out of sight

Missing reflections due to high wave motion

or other obstruction

Low sun conditions or bright lights behind target

Personnel in retro-reflective clothing

Once CyScan has identified and locked onto the expected

targets it continuously updates its estimate of the relative
position of the vessel and the target location and displays
a measure of confidence (i.e. quality) of this estimate.

User Benefits
Active wave motion compensation
Range, bearing and heading information
Single or multi-target operation
Intelligent rejection of false targets
Flat and cylindrical targets
Automatic adjustment to vessel draft changes

Target Tracking
Well proven, high level mathematical techniques are
employed in the tracking system to maintain reliable
target lock even in complicated target environments. This
ensures the highest data integrity and avoids sensor 'drop
out' during DP operations.
