SELECT BUS GETS THUMBS UP AND THUMBS DOWN
By Katie McFadden

Select Bus Service is coming to

Queens starting in 2017 and the
chance to offer input in winding down. On Tuesday, May 17,
a few dozen people showed up
to PS 42 in Arverne to see the
DOT and MTAs latest updates
on the SBS plan.
Since 2014, the DOT and MTA
have been collecting input on
the plan to replace the current
Q52/53 bus lines with Q52/53 Select Bus Service along Woodhaven and Cross Bay Boulevards,
which is proposed as high-quality, faster public transportation that will make streets safer.
The plan will affect commuters
throughout lower Queens. The
plan includes off-board fare collection, safer crosswalks, bus
lanes, turning medians into bus
stations, street resurfacing and
more. The city hopes to introduce the new service by 2017.
Many bus riders came out to

voice their support of the faster

service. Members of the Rockaway Youth Task Force and other
residents on the east end came
out to support an extension
of Q52 service further into Far
Rockaway. The service currently goes to Beach 67th Street. The
agencies confirmed that there
are plans to extend the Q52, but
it is still under review. Arverne
resident, Keith Collier was told it
might not be implemented until
the fall of 2017, after the bulk of
the SBS system is in place. The
only way off the peninsula for
some people is by bus as some
people cant access the train because of disabilities and the train
isnt convenient. I was told that
an extension is happening, but
were going to be stranded until
Fall 2017. I would like to see them
extend the Q52 before they finalize this plan, Collier said.
Supporters of the QueensRail
came out to show their dissent.
A major concern is that the plan

calls for the elimination of several bus stops in Rockaway to

reduce travel time, but the DOT
and MTA refers to this as consolidating. This means getting rid of
the Q52 stops at Beach 69th and
Beach 86th Street and the Q53
stops at Beach 98th, Beach 101st
and Beach 105th Street and West
5th Road in Broad Channel, forcing people to walk further to the
nearest stop. People are more
concerned about how long a trip
will take overall. When you have
people walking make farther to
bus stops, the trip is taking longer,
Queens Public Transit Committee member Eugene Falik said.
QPTC Chair Phil McManus expressed concern over reducing
the boulevard from three lanes to
two to create bus lanes, creating
restrictions for drivers. The DOT
should be called the DOG, Department of Gridlock. This plan is
a sham, McManus said.
The city has made some
changes to the original plan. The

original plan called for the elimination of several left turns allowed on Woodhaven and Cross
Bay Blvd in order to reduce bus
travel time and accidents between pedestrians and drivers.
Some argued that eliminating so
many left turns would be unfair
to businesses on the boulevard
as it would cause drivers to go
out of their way to get to them.
In the citys updated plan, they
have reduced the number of left
turn restrictions from about 12 to
five. The updated plan also calls
for about a mile reduction in bus
lanes from Jamaica Bay to the
Belt Parkway, as these were determined as areas where buses
can already move quickly.
There are two more chances to voice your opinion. There
is an Open House on Saturday,
May 21 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
at PS 65 (103-22 99th Street) in
Ozone Park and 6 p..m to 8 p..m
at PS 306 (95-16 89th Avenue) in
Woodhaven.

GLOBAL WARMING? REALLY?

By Lou Pastina
Ok, its May, its supposed to
be getting warmer, instead like
everything in this world today,
its the opposite, its getting
colder! And we are setting records for coldness. And when
did the wind become a gale
force? Forget about the boardwalk, the ferry, the roads; it
doesnt matter, no one is going
outside this summer! Memorial Day is two weeks away and
I havent put away my winter
coat!
I suppose the side benefit to the cold weather is that
we wont have to contend
with crowds this summer.
Who wants to sit on the beach
wrapped up like the mummy?
Even the whales dont like it this
cold. I guess we could do some
simulated golfing at the new
Rockaway Beach Golf Club. Its
possible to actually do some

fun shopping too; I mean the

Gift is Love, Lanas Loft, Polly &
Ester, the Blue Bungalow, Lolas, and the surf shops all offer
a mixture of things to buy.
If you wanted to do a pubcrawl that is always a possibility in Rockaway no matter what
the old timers say: In my day,
there was a bar on every corner. Well not every corner today but a short walk between
for a craft beer. And if you
needed to grab a bite there are
few restaurants worth checking
out, from Rockaways own Restaurant Row to 129th Street to
Breezy Points Kennedys.
A walk on a wind swept
beach is nice every once in a
while too. Not everyday, but
a good stretch of the legs never killed anyone. Although my
late father-in-law was fond of
saying, dont get hit by a car,
wait for the bus. It is harder to
ride a bike in the wind in Rock-

away; the wind seems to blow

in both directions. Running is
a bit harder too. So lets cross
those off our list for now. I am
constantly amazed by the fishermen I see on the bayside,
they are always out. They fish
no matter what, but has anyone ever seen them pull a fish
over that wall? Just saying.
You could take a walk on the
boardwalk that is finished and
hit the concessions. But you
probably want something to
warm you up, not beer. If its
the weekend you could always
go check out the Rockaway
Artists Alliance, they seem to
always have an art show or
music happening. The Rockaway Theatre Company is a
good choice too; its warm in
the theater.
Got to take your hat off to
the little leaguers, they play no
matter how cold it is. But put
that hat back on quickly. The

whale watching season has

begun again on the American
Princess. Thats fun to do. But
until it gets warmer, the dolphins and whales are probably
as cold as we are.
Its been so cold out that I havent even seen one mermaid
this spring yet. Boy, I hope it
gets warm fast; man cannot
live without his mermaids!

Beach Bummer

Community Board member

Danny Ruscillo asked the Parks
Department about lifeguard
staffing this summer for the areas where boardwalk construction will be ongoing through
July (Beach 108 - Beach 126) and
Beach access will be limited.
Heres what Parks had to say...
We can only safely open areas
for swimming when there are adequate access points to get emer-

gency personnel on to and victims off of the beach. At this point

we can only commit to having the
stretch between Beach 115 and
Beach 117 open for swimming on
Memorial Day weekend. Then as
construction progresses and new
access points open we will be able
to expand the swimming area.
Beach 108 will also have
beach access (and presumably
lifeguards).

Rockaway Runaway!
FIRST FASHION NIGHT TO DEBUT WEDNESDAY
By Katie McFadden
Rockaway
is
becoming
trendy, and not just as a beach
destination. Retail stores have
been part of the new business
boom in recent years and several will have some time in the
spotlight at the first ever Rockaway Fashion Night next week.
On Wednesday, May 25, from
7 p.m. to 10 p.m., the Community House (101-19 Rockaway
Beach Boulevard) will look like
New York Fashion Week; well a
scaled down, more casual, fun
and funky version. If you havent
noticed, retail is on the rise and
residents have been given less of
a reason to leave the peninsula
when it comes to shopping. The
first Rockaway Fashion Night
will give many of these local
businesses the opportunity to
showcase what they offer in their
stores, on one runway.
The first Rockaway Fashion
show is the brainchild of Lola

Star, who owns a fun souvenir

shop on Beach 116th and Jimmy Dowd, who owns St. James
Clothing, a brand of surf, skate
and NYC inspired shirts. Jimmy and I were speaking about
how much Rockaway is becoming a retail destination and we
were talking about ways to develop that and encourage more
people to come to Rockaway
to shop and encourage people in Rockaway to shop here
more often and Fashion Night
is something we came up with
to introduce people to these
shops so they can become familiar with them, Star said.
In recent years, opening a
retail business can present
many challenges, so those
participating in Fashion Night
are hoping it will give them a
much-needed boost. The
Internet has made it easy to
shop so you dont even have
to leave your home, but we
have so many people who

have decided to take a chance

on brick and mortar stores in
Rockaway and they have great
things to offer. People dont
realize the backend of owning a store, like having to pay
things like insurance, rent,
taxes and bills and thats before you even buy or produce
merchandise, Liz Smith,
co-owner of Blue Bungalow,
one of the participants in this
years Fashion Night, said.
For Smith, location can also
be a challenge for mom and
pop businesses. On Beach
116th, the lack of boardwalk
for the past few years, relentless parking ticket agents
and panhandlers have put
a damper on business. Not
only are we battling against
online retailers. Were also
battling against people not
wanting to come out for a fear
of getting a parking ticket or
not being able to access the
block because panhandlers

are asking for money and its

not a pleasant place to shop,
she said.
Aside from retail, Rockaway
has also seen an increase in restaurants, but local storeowners believe food is easier to sell
than retail. This Fashion Night
is a great way to showcase what
Rockaway has to offer in retail.
Theyve been doing it for restaurants with Taste of Rockaway, but
you cant order food or drinks online, like you can with clothing or
accessories, Smith added. Chloe
Meli of Lanas Loft, another participant in the show, shared these
sentiments. We still get people
every day who havent been in
the store. I feel like more people
will try out a new restaurant before they go to a clothing store,
so we hope by being part of this
Fashion Night, more people will
be able to see what we have to
offer, Meli said.

Weather And A Day To Remember

Stop by the Broad Channel

VFW Flea Market this Saturday
and Sunday, May 21 and 22, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4
p.m. and explore the many tables
filled with all manner of wonderful and eclectic items you never knew you needed - antiques,
bath and body products, designer
clothing, housewares, glassware,
artwork, jewelry and accessories,

crafts, toys and more! Presently,

the weather forecast for Broad
Channel is calling for a warm
sunny weekend. That being said,
the weekend flea market will be
held rain or shine, inside or out.
As summer rapidly approaches
most of us think of the Memorial
Day holiday that accompanies
the end of the month of May. Not
much thought is given to Armed
Forces Day, which is celebrated
this Saturday, May 21. President
Harry S. Truman led the effort
to establish a single holiday for
citizens to come together and
thank our military members for
their patriotic service in support
of our country and on August 31,
1949, Secretary of Defense Louis
Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to
replace separate Army, Navy,
Marine Corps and Air Force
Days. The single day celebration
stemmed from the unification of
the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. An excerpt
from a New York Post article back
in 1952 perhaps summed up this
holiday best by stating, It is our

most earnest hope that those

who are in positions of peril, that
those who have made exceptional sacrifices, yes, and those who
are afflicted with plain drudgery
and boredom, may somehow
know that we hold them in exceptional esteem. Perhaps if we
are a little more conscious of our
debt of honored affection they
may be a little more aware of how
much we think of them.
June 1 and the start of the Atlantic Basins 2016 Hurricane is
fast approaching and between
now and then we will all be deluged with media accounts of
extended range forecasts for this
seasons storm activity. Why issue extended-range forecasts for
seasonal hurricane activity? After Hurricane Irene back in 2011,
and especially Sandy in 2012,
people in our neck of the woods
are extremely curious to know
how active the upcoming season is likely to be. These forecasts
are issued not only to satisfy the
curiosity of the general public,
but more importantly, to focus
attention on the problems and

damage that can accompany a

strong Tropical Storm or Hurricane. After Sandy (1,298 days
ago but whos counting?) I think
those of us here in Broad Channel are already keenly aware of
that little factoid. That being said,
everyone should realize that it is
impossible to precisely predict a
specific seasons hurricane activity. Additionally, these forecasts
do not specifically predict where
within the Atlantic basin these
storms will strike. The probability of landfall for any one location
along the coast is very low and
reflects the fact that, in any one
season, most U.S. coastal areas
will not feel the effects of a hurricane no matter how active the individual season is. Nevertheless,
always keep in mind that it only
takes one strong storm making
landfall in our area to make it an
active season for us here in the
Channel.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE

From The American Legion
On Monday, May 30, 2016 The American Legion Daniel M. OConnell Post # 272 will host its annual
Memorial Day Parade. The day will commence with a Memorial mass at 10:30am on Beach 129 Street at
Saint Francis de Sales Church. At the conclusion of services, a ceremony will be held at the Four Chaplains
monument outside the church.
We will then assemble and the parade will proceed to 121 Street for a ceremony at the Jewish War Veterans Memorial Circle. Upon conclusion of our services there, the parade will proceed to the Doughboy
monument at Veterans Memorial Plaza at Beach 94 Street for a memorial service.
Following the reading of the names of those from the Rockaway community who gave their lives in service to our great country, we will retire to the Knights of Columbus hall on Beach 90 Street for refreshments
and hot dogs.
Memorial Day is the most solemn of days for Veterans as we remember the brave men and women who
made the supreme sacrifice to defend and preserve freedom around the world. We are well aware that
the Memorial Day weekend has become the official opening of the summer season and many people are
busy attending and hosting their BBQs. We, as Legionnaires, do not march for ourselves but for those who
gave there all for a grateful nation, we would be grateful for a robust turnout.
I would like to give a special thanks to Monsignor Bracken, The Ancient Order of Hibernian s (AOH) Division 21, the Rockaway Irish Boys (RIBS) and The Knights of Columbus for there support and participation in
this parade and all other organizations who help to make this day successful.
We cordially invite you to join us on this day of remembrance as we, for the 98th year in a row, honor
our fallen comrades.

James M. Trainor PC
Parade Chairman

Shifting Sands
OFFICIALS: WERE AWARE
By Katie McFadden

Where did the sand go? Despite the Army Corps of Engineers efforts to restore the
beach in recent years, it seems
that the sand doesnt want to
stick around. Neponsit resident
Ari Anolic recently brought the
issue of extreme sand erosion,
particularly in Neponsit and
Belle Harbor, to our attention.
The Parks Department and the
Army Corps of Engineers say
theyre aware of the issue.
Anolic sent several photos
showing erosion so bad that the
dunes around Beach 143rd to
Beach 145th Street have started
to collapse, creating a dangerous
drop for those who want to get
onto those beaches, and scraping
away at a protective barrier from
a future storm. The beach has
taken a beating all winter with
most, if not all, the sand that was
pumped being carried away,
Anolic said. There were one or

two big storms where, in some

areas, the water broke the snow
fencing and invaded the berm/
dune and washed away the newly
planted dune grass. Now, if there
is any storm and slightly elevated
tides, the water regularly reaches
the berm/dune. A few more relatively mild storms and the dunes
uptown will be very compromised. And, in a moderate hurricane.who knows?
The Rockaway Times reached
out to both the Army Corps of
Engineers and the Department
of Parks and Recreation regarding the issue. The Army Corps of
Engineers dredged and pumped
3.5 million cubic yards of sand
onto Rockaways beaches following Sandy. Project Manager Dan
Falt responded saying, We are
closely monitoring the erosion
and making sure it matches our
predictive model for the upcoming Draft Reformulation Report.
The pictures depict scarping into
the dune feature.

The Department of Parks and

recreation said that it is typical for
sand to erode during the winter
and accrete during the summer
and that they have been in touch
with the Army Corps regarding
the erosion in this particular
area. As part of the ACOEs replenishment project they anticipated some natural erosion
and included additional sand in
the design to accommodate this
erosion, Parks spokesperson
Meghan Lalor said. She added
that the Parks Department is doing work on the beaches in this

area, which was expected to start

on Wednesday, May 18. Pending DEC approval, Parks will begin grading sand in this area this
week, to ensure that there is safe
access to the beach from the bottom of the ramp, she said.

Women of Rockaway:
DR. SADHANA GUPTA OF BAYVIEW URGENT CARE
By Katie McFadden

Who runs the peninsula?

Women. A large number of local businesses and organizations are owned and operated
by females. And they deserve
recognition. As part of an ongoing series, the Rockaway Times
is profiling local female entrepreneurs each week. This week
is Dr. Sadhana Gupta, co-owner of Bayview Urgent Care in
Rockaway Park.
Are those spring allergies
starting to act up? Coming
down with a cold? Think you
mightve fractured something? Quick! Head to Bayview
Urgent Care at 115-06 Beach
Channel Drive, where Dr.
Sadhana Gupta and her staff
will do their best to make you
feel better as quickly as possible. Bayview Urgent Care has
been serving the peninsula
since Dr. Gupta and Dr. Zoya
Koroleva opened it in May

2012. Dr. Koroleva is mainly

at Bayview Urgent Cares sister location in Staten Island,
but Dr. Gupta occasionally works with her, as well as
Dr. Stanislav Kaminyar and a
mostly-female staff of about
10 others, including physician
assistants, nurses, technicians and administrative staff.
The professional and friendly
staff provides medical evaluations, examinations and
other health-related services
plus an on-site laboratory, an
on-site EKG, plus X-Ray and
immunization services. They
accept appointments and
walk-ins.
Dr. Gupta, of Long Beach, is
a family practitioner with 27
years of practice since graduating from medical school
in India. She always knew
she wanted to go into a field
where she could help people.
I thought about becoming a
nurse or teacher but being a

physician is something in my
heart that I felt I needed to do,
she said. She had previously

Center in Brooklyn and was

then Director of Ambulatory
Services at Peninsula Hospital
before it closed in April 2012.
With the closure leaving the
peninsula with a lack of services, Dr. Gupta and Dr. Koraleva
stepped in to give something
back to the community. Instead of taking up another job
somewhere, we thought wed
start an urgent care here in the
neighborhood because there
was no longer an emergency
room, Dr. Gupta said. Starting a private venture was a
new experience for Dr. Gupta,
but it gave her the opportunity
to have more control. When
Peninsula closed, it was in the
middle of my career and having to restart from the bottom
wasnt something I wanted to
do. I always thought it would
be a good opportunity to try
something on my own. It was

Continued on page 15

ROCKAWAY

something I have never ventured into but when you work
for yourself, you own your own
decisions. When the hospital
closed, we had no say in it.
We couldnt do anything for
ourselves or the other staff or
our patients, so at this point I
wanted to be in more control
of my life so that I could be
there for others. I didnt want
to be caught in the administrative stuff where we didnt
get the right support.
Bayview Urgent Care got off
to a rough start after opening
in May 2012. After we started, it was a little difficult and
things didnt seem to go in
our favor, and then we had
the storm, she said. Hurricane Sandy destroyed the
office just five months after
it opened, leading Dr. Gupta and her partner to start all
over again. Despite the damage, Dr. Gupta was still here
for the peninsula after Sandy.
She shared her office with

THURSDAY, MAY 19, 2016

other physicians following the
storm. We cleaned up and
got started and our landlord
was very gracious and provided us with a generator and we
served as a starting office for
a lot of people whose offices
werent ready yet. We shared
the space so we could be
there for the community, she
said. Her fellow staff says Dr.
Gupta came up with creative
ways to continue providing
services in desperate times.
We had no electricity for a
while, so Dr. Gupta drove her
car up to the sidewalk and let
her headlights shine through
the windows so that she could
continue to see patients after
Sandy, Javara said.
In return, Dr. Gupta says
the community has been
very supportive of the urgent
cares continued success.
When we decided to open an
urgent care, it was just biting
the bullet. You have your fears
but you just fight it out and I
think the support of our families and the community has
been tremendous. Everyone
has been so appreciative and

Page 15

the kind words that they share

truly help us move along.
Rockaway is such a resilient
community despite the damage that went on, she said.
Dr. Gupta is a very busy
woman, but she has found
balancing family life to be a
bit easier while working for
herself. She has two children,
a daughter who is in college
and a 13-year-old son. Right
now, its easier to be with my
family. As things have stabilized with the urgent care, I
can take time off for my kids to
take them swimming and stuff
like that. Its always a balance
for any working woman but
with starting my own business, it has become easier in
many ways, she said.
Bayview Urgent Care has
a mostly female staff. When
asked about women in the
medical field, Dr. Gupta said,
I think women are more compassionate and despite having
their own personal stresses,
they can still provide the attention and care that a person
needs when theyre not well.
Dr. Guptas staff members

say she is excellent at providing personalized care to her

patients. Shes very dedicated to her patients. She tailors
her care to the individual to
make them feel comfortable,
Practice Manager Anthony Paparelli said. For Dr. Gupta, the
most rewarding part of her job
is easing someones fears and
helping someone feel better.
Dr. Guptas goal for Bayview
Urgent Care is to simply keep
it going well while providing
good quality care in a timely
manner. For those looking to
start their own business, she
says, if you have the desire to
do it and you believe in yourself, you can do it. Weve also
been very lucky and blessed
to have nice people around us
and great family, friends and
staff who support us, she said.
Bayview Urgent Care is open
seven days a week, from 9 a.m.
to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 9
a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.
They accept most insurance
plans. For an appointment

BHPOA May Meeting Recap

By Pat Morgan

The Belle Harbor Property

Owners Association held its
General Membership meeting
on May 18 at PS/MS 114.
The new 100th Precinct Captain, Janet Holmes, was slotted
to be the featured speaker, but
she was detained with more
pressing business and was unable to attend.
DDC community liaison,
Harry Felder, was to provide
an update on the re-pavement
of beach blocks, but could not
attend due to a family commitment.
Instead, BHPOA
President, Hank Iori, updated
the members on the progress,

which included eight beach

blocks being completely done
(B140-149). He also provided an overview of other beach
block items such as flagpoles,
flowers and beach access.
Former BHPOA President and
current Queens Civic Congress
(QCC) Vice President, Barbara
Larkin, introduced the QCC President Harbachan Singh, who
described the mission of the organization which is to get focus
from NYC and NYS officials on
issues that affect the borough of
Queens. The QCC is an umbrella
organization for 110 Homeowner and Condo Associations in the
borough. Some of its members
were present to show support

for the BHPOA and to better understand the issues the BHPOA
faces. Topics discussed were the
controversial Rockaway Rail Line,
transportation issues in the borough (specifically the bike lanes
on Queens Blvd.) and the mayoral control over the educational
system.
Representatives of our elected officials were also present.
District 32 Council Member Eric
Ulrich spoke about the BHPOAs
Beach Clean-Up on May 7 (which
he attended and that he has made
six out of the last 7), the recently
approved City Council Plastic Bag
vote (which he opposed) and the
upcoming May 23 meeting with
the local elected officials and city
agencies (MTA, DOT, Parks, etc.)
which is a preemptive attempt to
avoid last summers traffic fiasco
at the Cross Bay Bridge.
NYS Assembly Member Phil
Goldfeder could not attend and
his representative noted that
Goldfeder had visited the work
being done on the beach blocks
and that Phil is involved with an
effort to have companies provid-

ing wireless phone service come

up with a free roaming solution
for post-disaster events that could
affect his district.
Dan Brown from Borough President Melinda Katz office noted that Department of Veterans
Service in Queens Borough Hall
is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10AM to 2 PM, spoke
of the B94th Street performance
space (and the Performance Series the BP is supporting) and
that Build It Back (BIB) is trying to
wrap things up by the end of the
year. If BIB applicants have not
heard back from the program,
they can call him on 718 286 2853
to assist.
Assembly District Leader, Lew
Simon, wrapped things up with
an update on the property located at 402 B134 (i.e. there is a new
owner and he will be working
with the architect to make sure
it is a one-family residence) and
that there is a meeting this Monday night, May 23, 6 pm at Borough Hall regarding the Rockaway Ferry, which he expressed his
concerns about.

their spring and summer clothing and accessories in a way
that will be fun for the businesses and guests. When you
walk through the door, youll
find a red carpet with a Rockaway Fashion Night backdrop
where youll be photographed
by local photographers. Youll

Page 19

come inside to the groove of

music from Dj Paddy Tubz
and our MC Adam Cardone, a
world-famous illusionist will
perform, narrate and introduce the designers and models and Jimmy Dowd will whip
up some fabulous cocktails as
guest bartender. The fashion
show will feature mostly local models who will be styled
by local designers, hairdressers and makeup artists and
theyll show off the products
of the various stores, Star
said, adding that there will be
much more in store like dance
skaters and other performers.
The evening will be full of
surprises. This isnt just your
regular fashion show. In typical Rockaway fashion, nothing about it will be boring,
she said.
It will all go down at the
Community House, which will
offer drink specials and VIP
packages. We chose Community House because its literally
the halfway point between all
the stores uptown and downtown and they have that fabulous backyard that is perfect to

have a runway for this kind of

thing, Dowd said. Its a great
way to combine restaurant and
retail. We need more businesses to come together like this,
Smith said.
Organizers hope that Fashion Night will be a good way to
encourage others to open retail business in the future. Its
incredible whats been happening in recent years with the
number of unique stores opening. You dont have to go over
the bridge to go shopping, you
can shop locally. Thats a reason to do things like this event,
to celebrate that fact and to get
more people to come to Rockaway and open up more stores.
Hopefully this is just the beginning, Star said. There are
plans to make Rockaway Fashion Night an even bigger event
in the future. We opened
this to all retail stores, but we
couldnt fit everyone. With
such a tremendous response,
were talking about turning
this into a Fashion Weekend.
We hope to go bigger and better next year, Star said.

Live Music

THE NEXT GENERATION

By Pat Morgan

Over the years, the Rockaway

peninsula has been a hotbed
for live music. However, I dont
see many young women or men
performing live music these
days. Has a tradition that has
lasted for millennia been lost to
the ages? No, it hasnt.
Breezy Point seems to be taking the lead in this nowadays.
Lifelong residents Mike Wallace
(guitar, bass, tin whistle, percussion, vocals), Chris Esposito
(lead guitar, vocals), and frontman James Sunshine Nicosia
(rhythm guitar, vocals) belong
to an up and coming musical
group called Whitewash Band.
As an incubator fostering musical growth, Sunshine declares
Breezy Point the best place in
the world to play. The people
are very supportive and there is
music all of the time.
Their roots go back a long
way. Chris and Mike have

known each other since first

grade when they attended
PS114. They met up with Sunshine as lifeguards on the
beach in Breezy in 2012.
What started out with a
joke band name of Midnight
Shift, the group began in 2014
and in 2015 they started playing live gigs for the first time.
It was a productive year, tallying up 20 performances mostly
in Breezy Point. The lads have
either opened up for or made
guest appearances with local favorites like Breezy Grass (their
inaugural appearance with
them at the Sugar Bowl in July
2015), The Kerry Kearney Band,
Charlie Wolfe, Tom Wipf, Hell
Or High Water Band, The Locals
and Brian Monahan. They also
played a set at the Open Mic
Night at Connollys last summer, which is still one of their
most memorable moments.
The young men are amazed
at the mentoring and support

Whitewash Band at the Sugar Bowl in Breezy Point (July 2015)

they have received from the

elder statesmen involved with
the peninsulas musical scene.
Breezy Grass mandolinist/guitarist Vic La Mura lives a few
doors down from Esposito and
has tutored him on guitar theory. The Hell Or High Water
Band bought them gig bag full
of musical gear. The late Brian
Monaghan, friends with Wallaces father Kenny, was a little
more direct when he was over

their house and heard Mike

play. He smacked him on the
back of the head and told Mike
to get the f*** out of the basement and start playing in front
of people!
Besides being fans and playing the music of classic rock
acts such as Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffett, the Beatles, The Stones, Bob Dylan, Led

Zeppelin and Billy Joel, they
also have more contemporary
numbers from Pearl Jam, The
Red Hot Chili Peppers and
Green Day in their repertoire.
In addition to playing music
that Baby Boomers grew up
with, they see themselves as
evangelists to their fellow Millennials, who arent as familiar
with this genre of music as you
would think.
The trio has also been writing their own original songs,
which they will be debuting
this summer. Chris has three
ready for primetime.
Whitewash Band is going
to change it up a little bit in
2016. Esposito has picked up
an electric guitar in addition
to his acoustic Fender, Mike
will now be adding the electric
bass guitar to his musical bag
of tricks and the guys are in the
process of recruiting a female
drummer to round out their
sound. There may even be an
EspoStock in the works.
When not gigging during the summer season, the

young men are attending college: Mike majoring in Marine

Technology, Chris in Building
Construction and Sunny in
Marketing.
Its refreshing to see and
hear young people who are
big fans of music, who love
playing in front of a live audience and in general, having a blast. The three of them
all agree that the best feeling
in the world is when during a
gig, they look up and the entire audience is singing along
to one of their cover songs.
Their dream is to one day
have that happen with one of
their own tunes.
Whitewash Band can be
found on Facebook (https://

They also have live acoustic
clips from Connollys on SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com

ADDABBO:

Help Teachers
Recoup Out Of
Pocket Expenses
To help teachers, principals and other educators who
reach into their own pockets
to purchase necessary school
supplies, Senator Joseph P.
Addabbo, Jr. recently joined
his Senate colleagues in approving legislation (S.4615)
that would provide these dedicated school professionals
with a state personal income
tax deduction of up to $500 to
help cover these job-related
costs.
In a released statement
Addabbo said, It is very common for teachers and other
educators to buy school supplies, without any means for
reimbursement, in an effort
to improve the classroom experience for their students. It

is only fair that we recognize

our educators for their dedication and willingness to go
the extra mile for their pupils
by offering a tax break to help
them recoup some of their
costs.
The proposed personal income tax deduction would
apply to educators working in
both public and non-public
schools. Addabbo noted that
this state personal income tax
credit would complement a
federal tax deduction that is
in place to help teachers offset classroom expenses.
Now that the legislation has
been approved by the Senate,
the bill is under consideration
by the Assembly Committee
on Ways and Means.

Ferry Sensible
Dear Editor:
I read with great interest your
recent editorial regarding the petition for naming of the Rockaway
Landing. This relatively minor issue clearly illustrates how history
in Rockaway is set to repeat itself
once again. Well intentioned and
fair-minded people are thrusting their support for this naming
without regard to the polarizing
effect it already has had.
Before I go any further, I want
to go on record first as stating
emphatically that I mean no
insult or disrespect to the individual for whom the petition is
being circulated. Yes, her con-

tributions are an unmistakable
part of our campaign to restore
the service. However, by singling
out her accomplishments and
ignoring everyone else who has
been involved in the struggle to
bring a regular ferry service to
Rockaway is both insulting and
disrespectful to those who have
toiled for this cause long before
Hurricane Sandy and since. If
and when a regular ferry docks
in Rockaway, we need to keep
in perspective that it only happened through the intense efforts of many people for a very
long time. Attributing its resumption to only one person is
both unfair and inaccurate. Unfortunately, it appears that personalities have come into play
because the naming is intended
to exclude one very prominent
ferry advocate. As I said earlier,
when one individual is ignored
while another is lauded it diminishes the honor of the naming and of the neighborhood it is
intended to serve.
We need to remember that
city government has traditionally been very happy to appease
community groups by granting

The Rockaway Times

small requests (like dock and

street naming) in their effort to
placate the local populace. This
is expedient and serves as an opportunity for the city to point out
how responsive it has been while
in reality it costs them nothing.
We should not expend any political capital on something as
frivolous as a dock naming when
we dont yet have the service, or
parking to support it or additional infrastructure. Wouldnt it be
better to cooperatively agree in
an open forum, when the time is
right to name the dock after any
of our local heroes ? Perhaps it
could be one of those who gave
their lives on 9/11, or in defense
of our country or even during
Hurricane Sandy.
The authors of the petition are
rightfully proud for getting over
1,600 signatures in support. As
significant as that number is,
it is only a small percentage of
the over 100,000 who live on the
peninsula. I applaud everyone
involved in this effort because
community involvement is the
precursor to community improvement but ultimately unity
for the big ask is what we re-

ally need. Lets make the smart

choice here, not the fast one;
lets not help history repeat itself.

Meter Blues
Dear Editor:
I know the citizens of our City
will never see the previous parking meters put back but they
were much less of a problem
and they did not break down
as much. Im tired of leaving
my car door open in order to
show traffic enforcement agents
that I had to go to another Muni-Meter to get a paid parking
receipt in order to park, its just
ridiculous. I really believe the
Muni-Meters were not tested
long enough before they were
all installed into our Communities. I also believe weather
conditions play a big factor on
their operation. I am asking the
Department of Transportation
PLEASE DO SOMETHING
about this ongoing problem!

Dose of Humor
Dear Editor:
I really enjoy the Rockaway
Times. I read it from cover
to cover every week. There
is something uplifting about
every issue, which leads me
to supply a little bit of humor.
I own an 89 Caddy Seville.
This morning while it was
parked in my driveway, I noticed a bee swarming around
it. Im not sure whether or not
it was trying to extract nectar
or pollinate my Sweet Ride.

again? It is always under construction. Is repair work just

on somebodys calendar and
they forget to mark it as complete?
Its ridiculous. Can someone please tell the DOT to
fix it and fix it right and then
move on! There are other
streets, as we all know, which
need repair! Its time Rockaway Beach Boulevard got a
rest.

Diary of A Fat Man

The Rockaway Times

LOSING THE BIG CLOTHING

By Bruce Bernfeld

After losing 98 pounds (at

last weigh in) I still have
a great fear of gaining my
weight back. It took me until this week, almost a year
after my journey began, to
get rid of all my big clothing. Shirts, suits, jackets,
pants... All the way back to
size 54 pants (Im now almost a 36!) Why was I holding on to them? Did I think
I would need them again?
I have been on weight
loss regimens beforeand
have gained it all back. But
something tells me this
time its different. It just
feels different this time.
The press doesnt help.
(Of course, The Rockaway Times is an exception
to that rule... I shudder to
think what would have be-

come with my journey if I

didnt have a forum to write
about it this past year!)
This past week there have
been many stories published about how many of
The Biggest Loser contestants have gained all the
weight they lost back. Scientific gobbledygook about
a change in the bodys metabolic rate made it impossible for them to keep it
off!! Bull!! They just started eating more and more.
Its simple. But how can
you not fall into that trap? I
think it may be easier than
you think. JUST DONT
START EATING MORE AND
MORE!!! Easy, right?
Well, maybe it is! Take

THANK YOU

to the Rockaway Beach Community

for supporting the Wounded Warrior Adaptive
Water Sports Festival for over a decade (2005-2015).
Whether you made a donation, housed a warrior, purchased a tee shirt or hat,
volunteered or stood and waved to the troops as they entered our community,
we appreciate your loyal support summer after summer.
Because there are far too many individuals, businesses, clubs, civic groups and various
NYC Depts. to personally thank you ALL by name, please know we are deeply grateful
for the support you gave us which enabled our event to be the success it was.
Please continue to support our brave men
and women who serve our country!
Good Luck to the next group of organizers who bring the troops

Narcolepsy
By Peter Galvin, MD

My last column dealt with

sleep apnea, or OSA. Today I
would like to discuss a related but
very different syndrome narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is one of the
most common causes of chronic
sleepiness and affects about one
out of every 2,000 people. Despite
its frequency the average time
from onset of symptoms to diagnosis is five to 15 years, and about
half of those affected remain undiagnosed. Some cases of narcolepsy are caused by chemical
changes in the brain while many
cases have no known cause.
Symptoms often begin early in life, usually between 10
and 20 years of age. Narcolepsy causes daytime sleepiness,
which is often severe, resulting
in difficulty focusing and staying awake in school, at work
and at times of inactivity (like
watching a movie). Often the
diagnosis is made only after
problems have arisen like declining grades in school, poor
work performance or a car accident. It may be challenging to
distinguish daytime sleepiness
due to narcolepsy from lack of
sleep, especially in teenagers.
Unlike those with OSA people
with narcolepsy usually have
good-quality sleep and feel refreshed upon arising only to
have sleepiness return with
inactivity. REM sleep usually
occurs only during usual sleep
periods in healthy individuals.
REM sleep is characterized by
vivid, story-like dreams, rapid eye movements (REM) and
paralysis of nearly all skeletal
muscles except those used for
breathing. Those with narcolepsy also have REM sleep during the day, which may intrude
on wakefulness, often causing
eerie, dreamlike states. Disturbing hallucinations are common
during transition from sleep to
awake states in narcolepsy, for

example sometimes prompting

a call to 911 for an imagined intruder in the house.
Infrequently
narcolepsy
may cause fragmented sleep
at night, which sometimes requires a sleep-aid medication.
Weight gain and depression are
frequently seen in narcolepsy.
Like OSA, polysomnography
(sleep-lab study) is usually required to confirm the diagnosis. Healthy people who take
a daytime nap usually need at
least 15 minutes to fall asleep
and do not have daytime dream
sleep while those with narcolepsy take only a few minutes to
fall asleep during the day and
do have daytime dream sleep.
As mentioned above, teenagers
often have insufficient sleep,
which causes daytime sleepiness. Extending their sleep
period to eight or nine hours a
night for a week can often help
to rule-out narcolepsy.
Anyone who suspects that
they might have a sleep disorder should start with a visit to
their doctor. Medical tests may
help to distinguish other causes of daytime sleepiness. After
the diagnosis of narcolepsy is
made, treatment is often both
behavioral and pharmacologic. Daytime sleepiness often decreases with sufficient
good-quality sleep at night
combined with a 20-minute
daytime nap (i.e. Ronald Reagan power-nap). Medication
like Provigil, Nuvigil, Concerta/Ritalin and Adderal, which
work in the brain to cause
chemical changes that increase
daytime wakefulness, may be
helpful but can have many side
effects and can often lead to
abuse and diversion.

Sleep Medicine.

Restoring An Old Plaque

By Artie Wallace

If you have an old plaque

or trophy you would like to
restore, here are a few tips
on how to do it.
First: Lets start with the
brass finish. They make
some good brass cleaners,
but in a lot of cases that
wont do the trick. You may
need to buy a small container of brass paint, apply
it using a small artist brush.
If youre looking for an antique look, allow to partially dry and wipe using a
staining rag.
Second: Now we are going to work on the chrome.
As with the brass, they sell
chrome polish and chrome
paint. Chrome has a tendency to clean up easier than tarnished brass,
but I recommend getting

a chrome cleaner/polish
from an automotive store
(automotive chrome cleaners usually work much better than the household versions).
Third: Wood bases/backings can become worn
or damaged through the
years. Dont fret; this is
probably the easiest part
of the restoration process.
First thing is to fill any
chips/cracks with a stainable and sandable wood
filler that is close in color,
let harden and sand if
needed. Then pick a MinWax stain/sealer, one that
is a few shades darker than
the original color. Getting
as little as possible on the
brass/chrome, brush it on,
wait about 30 to 45 seconds
and wipe it off. Let dry then
repeat until the colors of

the wood start to blend. As

you apply the stain/sealer,
be sure to constantly check
for runs on the sides and
wipe runs right away.
Fourth: If you read my articles, you know I am a fan
of clear coating. Normally I
recommend spraying it on,
but not in this case. Youre
better off using a brush on
clear coat. Carefully apply
it with a small brush trying
not to get it on the brass/
chrome. Only do one side
at a time and allow it to
fully dry, applying a second coat if needed. When
brushing on clear coating,
be sure to wipe up or brush
out any runs on the sides
right away.

In Touch With Tech

THERE ARE VAMPIRES IN YOUR HOUSE
By Pat Morgan

There are, really. No, not the

ones you need a wooden stake
or string of garlic bulbs to get
rid of.
Im referring to vampire power, also known as standby power. Thats the term for the electric power consumed by your
electronic and electrical appliances while they are switched
off, but are still drawing some
power, or in a standby mode.
The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory reports that
roughly 50 devices and appliances in the typical American
household are always drawing
power. The top five culprits are:
computer equipment, TVs,
surround sound systems, cable or satellite TV boxes, and
household items with a clock
(e.g. microwave, DVD player).
Some of your devices, like
your computer or television,
appear to be switched off, but

they are actually in a different

state of on from the appliance itself to your electrical
plug. Disconnecting from the
power point (power strip or
outlet) can solve the problem of
standby power completely.
Standby power has its advantages and disadvantages. Having it on allows you to quickly
boot up your computer, but you
are paying for that luxury without knowing it. According to
the U.S. Department of Energy,
standby power accounts for five
to 10 percent of residential energy use, which costs the average
U.S. household about $100 per
year. That can be a considerable
amount of money for someone
on a fixed income, even though
PSEG claims that electric bills for
residential customers are down
$18 or 11 percent from 2014.
Comedian Jay Leno used to
joke about how his parents
VCR (remember them?) used
to always flash 12:00 every

morning. His parents would

unplug it along with the TV before they went to bed. That ritual was performed nightly due to
fear of the appliances catching
fire. This scenario is much less
likely with modern equipment,
but not impossible. Older television and computer displays
had high voltages and currents,
and were far more of a fire risk
than thin panel LCD and other displays we have today. But,
there is still a risk of fire from
devices in standby mode, primarily in televisions.
The U.S. Department of Energy has suggestions on how
to reduce your standby power
loads and save money:
Use a Power Strip with
Switches. Use a power strip
with on/off switches to plug
in your appliances. For example, buy a power strip for your
living or entertainment room
and plug your TV, DVD player, Cable box, game system

and sound system into it. You

should have another power
strip in the place you have your
computer, printer, paper shredder, lamp and phone charger. If
you plug all of your products
into a single power strip and
flip the switch to the off position when these items are not
in use, they are now definitely
off.
Unplug Your Products.
Simply unplug your products.
There are some products that
you will need to keep plugged,
like the digital alarm clock in
your bedroom or the refrigerator. But there are many appliances that you may not need
to have plugged in, such as
the microwave or toaster oven.
(The catch here is that you need
to remember to plug them back
in when you go to defrost or
toast something).
Remember that the best time
to slay vampires is when the
sun is coming up!

On The Road With Rover and Rosa

LAST GREAT STOP: VIETNAM
By Wild Rover

No trip across SE Asia would

be complete without a stop in
Vietnam. This goes double for
Americans given our countrys
history in Vietnam and the
enormous impact that the Vietnam War has had on American
culture. Beyond that though, Vietnam epitomizes what makes
SE Asia so special. Its a country
of epic beauty, mind-bending
contrasts, ancient history, recent tragedy, and palpable optimism.
We began our Vietnam journey in Saigon (technically Ho
Chi Minh City, but still commonly referred to as Saigon). We had
low expectations heading in, as
most people told us to just stay
for the food and many reviews
described it as a city you either
love or hate. As often is the case
with measured expectations,
they were quickly exceeded. The
city is literally filled with motorbikes, but if anything, it added
a great energy to the city. Coupled with the strong cafe culture
popularized by the French during colonial times, it made for a
very cool place to walk around
and have a cup of coffee watching the world go by. Speaking of
the coffee, it definitely belongs
in the pantheon of great ethnic
specialty coffees: Irish coffee
and Turkish coffee. They make it
with very rich, coarsely ground
dark coffee beans combined
with condensed milk, best
served over crushed ice. It is out
of this world and a must try next
time youre in a Vietnamese
restaurant. The food was equally delicious. Everything we ate
in Saigon from the top Vegetarian restaurant to fast food
Pho (noodles) was ridiculously
good. And each meal cost about
$10 for two with local Saigon
Beer included.
Our next stop was Hoi An in
the middle of the country. On
the opposite side of the expectations versus reality dynamic,
we went in with huge expectations, and as you might expect,
we came out disappointed. It is
a UNESCO designated former
Portuguese/Japanese/Chinese

trading port going back to the

1600s perched on a river with a
beach within biking distance.
Sounds perfect, right? Unfortunately, it was run like a giant
night market and only good if
you like haggling over $2 elephant pants. We quickly split
and headed up north to Hue.
Hue is a mid-size city and
home to the imperial ruins
of the Nguyen dynasty. After
whiffing on Hoi An it started to
feel like we had lost our mojo
and we were going to have just
a so-so Vietnam experience,
which would have been a major bummer given how high on
our list it was to start the trip.
After some searching, we were
able to track down a company
we read about that gives motorcycle tours along famous
Ho Chih Minh trail. We didnt
have time to do one of their full
programs, but they offered us a
custom one day trip that could
leave the next morning. At this
point, it was 50/50 whether this
was going to be a great move, or
if it was a classic case of chasing
after a few missteps. Luckily, it
was a move that totally righted our mojo and got us back
on the right track for Vietnam.
Despite the fact that the streets

of Hue are de facto four-way

streets with two-way traffic on
each side of a two-way street,
we loved being on the motorcycles. Our guides were pros
and we kept to the back roads
and focused on the countryside. We started in a remote
Buddhist temple where we listened to a monk do his daily
prayers, stopped by deserted
US army bunkers atop a hillside
overlooking the Perfume River,
drove through endless fields of
emerald rice paddies, and finished on a bamboo boat fishing with a local fisherman. We
finished up the next day at the
imperial citadel, which is largely restored after serious damage
during the war. Its a serene oasis in the middle of the city and
a fantastic place with hardly anyone there. With our mojo fully
restored, we headed to Hanoi.
Hanoi is what we expected
Bangkok to be - chaotic, noisy,
and messy, in all the best kind of
ways. Like Saigon it has a great
cafe culture with Vietnamese
coffee shops and curbside bars
throughout the Old Quarter, but
its pace is even more frenetic
than Saigon. Crossing the street
there is exactly like the video
game Frogger, so you need the

Vietnamese coffee and cheap

beers to get your courage up.
The highlight of our Hanoi trip
was being flagged down by a
couple of HS kids who talk with
tourists to practice English in
exchange for acting as amateur
tour guides. We wound up sitting with them and drawing a
crowd of four or five other young
people who also wanted to talk
before we ended up in a coffee shop with three of the kids
whose energy and enthusiasm
was so uplifting. Its a great way
to really mix into a place while
also contributing something of
your own.
Last, but not least, we spent
a night on Halong Bay on the
Gulf of Tonkin. Another UNESCO site, it is a formation of over
2,000 karst limestone cliffs and
islands that stretches for over
600-square miles. It was a staggeringly gorgeous setting with
amazing rock configurations
covered in emerald green vegetation rising out of turquoise
water. Best yet, we stayed on a
private, single cabin boat, which
made it even better, as it was like
having the whole place to ourselves. The boat was modeled
after the old-fashioned dragon
boats, so it was like being a Victorian era British industrialist
for a night.
What struck us most about
Vietnam is that after suffering over two million casualties
during its wars with the French
and then Americans, it doesnt
overwhelm the current culture.
Of course there are memorials
and people remember it, especially those that lived through
it, but theres a distinct attitude of the past is the past and
that we Vietnamese have way
more to our culture than those
20 years of conflict. The war is
something to be remembered,
but by no means a fundamental part of current Vietnam. For
most, theres too much energy
and opportunity towards the
future, to be anchored to the
past, no matter how tragic. In
this way, Vietnam most represents the region as a whole, and
why it was the perfect place to
end the trip of a lifetime.

World Champions Karates Newest Black Belt

Sunday, April 24, was a memorable day for Juan Cruz. That day,
for five hours, Juan was pushed
and tested his limits. In the end,
he earned his coveted Black Belt,
making him a Shodan (first degree
black belt). Juans years of Shotokan (Japanese) Karates training
were put to the test. Sensei Bruce
Hodes made sure Juan exhibited
all aspects of his training.

The test included knowledge

and performance of 18 Kata
(empty hand forms), 11 weapons Kata, including Bo Staff,
Sai, Nunchuku, Shinai (bamboo
sword), Tonfa, and Ekubo (oar).
The grading continued with a
knowledge of Bunkai (meaning
of the Kata movements), a self
defense aspect, and a teaching
requirement. The conclusion of

Juans grueling day was 5 minutes of non-stop sparring (round

robin),where he fought four opponents in succession. This part
was especially tense as Juan has
asthma and diabetes which he
has to deal with everyday. He
stayed the course and maintained his composure throughout. Congratulations to the Cruz
family and grandma Rosa.

They have supported him all

these years in his training. Juan
joins a long list of Black Belts
awarded in over 45 years of instructing Shotokan Karate by
Sensei Bruce Hodes at The World
Champions Karate Center.

Lacrosse Club Back in Action

Sunday was an exciting day of

lacrosse on the Rockaway peninsula as there were a total of ten
games played between: Docs
NYC Lacrosse (Docs), Brooklyn
Lacrosse Club (BLC), Harlem
Lacrosse and Leadership (HLL)
and the Lacrosse Club of Rockaway (LCR) Natives. Both the
boys and girls teams showed
improvement in the fundamental skills, competitive nature, and
game awareness.

This past Sunday proved to be

another great learning experience
for the girls 5th/6th grade LCR
Natives. They braved the wicked
wind at Beach Channel HS to battle a competitive HLL team and
came up just shy in a 5-4 defeat.
Congratulations to the Girls
7th/8th grade team on their first
win. The Native girls showed tremendous improvement in skills
and tenacity to come from behind to earn a one goal victory

against a great group from HLL.

The boys 3/4th grade team
lost a competitive game against
Docs in their first ever organized
competition. Metteo Perrottas
terrific goaltending play helped
keep the game close as the rest of
the boys improved on their skills
and competitive nature.
The 7/8th grade Natives won its
first-ever organized game against
a good Docs team. The boys
5th/6th and 7/8th grade teams

each lost tough games against

well-coached, skilled, and athletic teams from Harlem. Both
teams showed great resiliency
and mental toughness coming
back to earn wins against BLC.
The Natives are on the field
again next Sunday looking to improve their skills, be competitive,
and most of all, have fun!

the Lacrosse Club of Rockaway).

GOLF THOUGHTS
By Joel Garyn

Each week I will give you a

brief lesson on different parts to
work on. My advice is to be diligent and practice each weeks
advice as often as you can for it
to become an automatic part of
your game.
THE GRIP
There are 3 types of grips: the
Overlap, Interlock, and 10 Finger. 60 percent of Golfers use
the Overlap, which I prefer. With

this grip the little finger of the

right hand rests on or overlaps
the index finger of the left hand.
Make sure that the little finger
on your right hand is hooked in
the groove between the index
finger and middle finger of your
left hand. This will ensure that
your hands will not slip apart
and it will make your hands feel
like one unit.
(Left handers just reverse the
above).
I prefer a strong left hand grip

in which the V formed by

the thumb and forefinger are
pointing to the right shoulder,
but place the right hand so it
covers the left thumb in a neutral position, the right hand V
will point straight up toward the
chin. This next piece of advice
is very important--your trigger
finger should be pressing into
the side of the club that puts the
first knuckle on top of the handle. The trigger finger will maintain side pressure on the handle

from start all the way to impact.

The above may sound difficult
but it is not, just practice in front
of a mirror and do it repeatedly
and once you achieve this it will
become an automatic response
when you grip the club.
Next week Ill write about
chipping and this critical part
of the game that leads to good
scoring.
Have Great Week!

Instructor)

Rockaway Little League Report

A RALLY FOR THE AGES !
Move over Buffalo Bills, Indiana Pacers and Cleveland Indians. The Mahoney Real Estate
Athletics are now the greatest
Comeback Kids of all time after
rallying from a 16-0 deficit to
nip the Laquila Group Pirates
17-16. The As scored 14 runs
during last licks, powered by
two grand slams from John Kelly. It was the Athletics (1-6) first
win of the season.
In game that was unprecedented in the history of Rockaway
Little League and perhaps organized baseball the Mahoney
As (Minor Boys) dug out of a
16-run hole in their final two
at bats. The Pirates (3-3) built
an impressive lead through the
first four and one half frames.
When the As put up a threespot in the bottom of the 5th,
it seemed like a moral victory. The shutout was avoided.
Excited, the Athletics kept the
momentum going in the sixth
inning. They were able to keep
the high-scoring Pirates off the
board in the top half. In the bottom of the 6th, the As took full
advantage of the no limit rule
for last licks. There were bases
loaded when John Kelly got up
and hit a grand slam. The boys
rallied. They all wanted to get in
on the action. Athletics batters
kept getting on base and the top
of the lineup came again. Once
again bases were loaded for John
Kelly. Again he stepped up and
hit a second grand slam, matching a feat only achieved once in
Major League Baseball history.
His second round tripper gave
John eight RBIs in the inning and
forged the final score of 17-16.
To prove their comeback magic wasnt a one-time trick, the
Mahoney As rallied from a 6-0
deficit a few days later to edge
the Servpro Royals 7-6. Hits by
John Kelly and Joe Butler were
key points to the come from behind win. The Athletics got great
pitching from Matt Steiner (3
innings), John Kelly (2 innings),
and Ben Gressel (pitching debut, win in relief). Spectacular defensive plays by Michael
Nestor at 1st and 2nd base were
responsible for saving at least
two runs during the course of
the game. The As rallied to vic-

tory with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Matt Schneider
and Timothy Foley walked. John
Kelly and Matt Steiner each hit
a single). Ben Gressel sacrificed
the winning runs across.
The St. Johns Hospital Tigers
staged a rally of their own in
Major Girls. Chloe Murphy tied
up the game against the firstplace Graybeards Bonnies with a
three-run homer in the top of the
sixth. The Bonnies responded in
last licks to nip the Tigers 14-13.
St. Johns Maeve Murnan had
another great game at the plate
with five RBIs. Lauren DOrazio
had some key plays at the plate
and also gunned out a runner at
third. Alex Conaboy helped out
with her smart and speedy base
stealing skills as well.
Payback can be as exciting as a
comeback. After the Ridgewood
Savings As beat the Jamesons
Reds 9-8 in the first game of the
season, the Reds have been looking forward to their rematch ever
since. Last weekend, Cory Davis
was the Star of the game for the
Reds, hitting two home runs over
the fence, tying a RLL record for
home runs in game in the Major Boys Division. The Reds got
on the board early. Jason Melero walked to lead off the game.
Cory Davis singled, sending Melero to third. John Piccione singled, sending Melero home. Davis and Piccione both stole bases
before Patrick Ayrovainen doubled them both in. The As came
roaring back in the 3rd when a
hard hit ground ball by Joe Tammaro, wound up allowing him to
run all the way home after three
errors on the same play by the
Reds. Tammaros hit knocked in
Jack Ryan, Nico Allen, and Sean
OHagan ahead of him. Cory
Davis came in to pitch the 4th
and 5th innings, striking out four,
and keeping the As scoreless.
The Reds scored four runs in the
5th, on Davis 2-run home run
that scored James Mangan, and
Corey Schwachs two run single
into right field that scored John
Piccione and Harry Charles. The
As threatened in the 6th, with
Joe Tammaro, Tommy Bennett,
and Zach Erhard loading the
bases before the Reds Piccione
pitched his way out of danger by

getting the next three batters out

on fly balls. The As and Reds are
battling for fifth place in the very
tight Major Boys division but are
both within striking distance of
the leaders.
One of those leaders, the AKB
Security Rockies (5-3), got a Cy
Young performance from pitcher Reid Heyman in their critical
5-4 victory over the dangerous
Conte Carpet Royals. The young
gunner outdid his last showcase
of nine strikeouts in four innings
with Sundays latest gem, punching out 12 Royals in 5 2/3 innings.
Half of the strikeouts were called.
Heyman allowed only two runs
on five hits. In the top of the 6th,
with the Rockies leading 3-1, the
Royals ran themselves back into
the game. Brendan Byrne stole
home on some quick thinking.
Colin Byrne then swiped the
plate, tying the game 3-3. The
Royals ended up taking the lead
4-3, showing the resilience of
the Kansas City Royals. Unlike
those Royals, it wasnt enough
as the Rockies showed their own
fight in the bottom of the frame.
Chris McElhinney led off the in-

ning with a single followed by

two walks to Nicholas Rogers
and Michael Light, loading the
bases with no outs. The Royals got a force out at the plate to
keep their lead but Reid Heyman hit a clutch single, scoring Rogers to make it 4-4. In a
pressure-packed situation, Joe
Mortellaro blooped a two-strike
pitch just beyond the reach of
the third basemans glove, advancing Michael Light to score
the winning run for the Rockies.
It was one of the best games of
the year so far.
The Major Boys divisions other front runner, the DriveSafe
Auto Center Mariners (5-3), also
received strong pitching performances in their 8-1 over the Ridgewood As. Jack Lindon and Sean
Peter Mullen combined pitching
to strike out six and allow only one
earned run. John Duadelin (3for-3, RBI), Charlie Smith (1-for2, 2RBIs) and Anthony Ciappetta
(2-for-4, 2 runs) paced the attack.
Nick Galimi played very solid defense and also knocked in a run.
(This report was submitted by
Rockaway Little League officials).
