Winch Operation Guidelines
1. Engineer must verify depth/tension alarm and shutdown settings before running in hole.
2. Before RIH, check proper operation of the winch shutdown system and TLS. Activate the high-tension shutdown using the tool weight and verify that the winch drum stops and that the brakes are applied.
3. Attention is required when RIH and POOH especially near the surface and/or the seafloor. Do not allow distractions or other operational tasks to compromise safe winch operations.
4. The use of cell phone is strictly banned. Hands free direct rig floor communication devices are the only approved form of communication while operating the winch.
5. When RIH set the Top Depth Shut down to 70m (200 ft) below surface and set the Top Depth Alarm to 100m (300ft). Stop near Surface, check Tool Wt, in Fluid. Recalculate Max OverPull taking into account the
weak point rating, well temperature and normal tension at the actual depth. Update Winch operators Notes.
6. Stop every 2000ft to take Normal Tension (Tn). Take Tn at Shoe, update Alarm/Shut down settings.
7. Regularly cross check the actual tool depth between IDW and cable position on drum flanges using the Z-chart. The use of the Z-chart is mandatory. In case of failure of primary depth control system, move the
winch so as to reach to the nearest corner of the present Z-chart pointer to get an estimation of the depth.
8. Prior to TD : Stop Log Down, Take Normal Tension (if client permits), compute Max OverPull, set Shutdowns, Communicate MAX Pull to Winch Operator.
9. Tag TD: Unpause Depth Log, Open Calipers, Verify Calculated Normal Weight, Adjust Alarms/Shutdown.
10. Up Log : Adjust Settings periodically as Normal Weight decreases, Advise Winch Operator.
11. At Casing Shoe : Set Shutdown immediately above observed Surface Tension
12. While POOH : Pull out no faster then you went in the hole : Tension no more than 1.2 x Static Tension; Update Winch Alarm/Shutdown parameters; Slow Down for Restrictions ; Identify Dragging, Floating
Sticking from Winch notes.
13. Stop the winch between 100 m (300 ft) and 70 m (200 ft) from surface or seafloor when POOH. Coordinate crew positioning and assign duties for removal of the pack-off or line-wiper and bringing the tool safely
to surface inside the riser. Do not move the winch until applicable explosive, radioactive and wellhead equipment procedures have been discussed and understood.
14. When the tool depth is less than 100 m (300ft), reduce the cable speed to less than 2000 ft/hr. The speed can be increased up to 6000 fph for subsequent runs during a continuous operation*, between 100m
(300ft) and a depth equal to the length of the toolstring or 15m(50ft), whichever is deeper. Extreme care must be observed when operating at high winch speeds. In the following cases, the 2000 fph limit will
remain: Rig Up/Down operations, caliper or other device in the open position, pressure jobs where tool trap and head catcher are not available, descents with misrun, potential split gun, or when status of the
toolstring or depth control systems are in doubt.
15. Bypassing Shut down or alert system is forbidden except in emergency situation and in TLC operations.
16. Ensure that the winch controller is set to neutral and parking brake applied before leaving the winch controls unattended.
17. Do not drive third party winches, exceed the SWL of the cable, or exceed the pulling capacity of any part of the winch system unless the operating procedure has been clearly agreed upon between the client and
Schlumberger management.

Stuck Situation Procedure

Best practice on winch handling to avoid tension cycling will be as follows (must do for operation involving independant tension relief such as Capstan):

When RIH, do not "push" the cable in the hole. Allow the tool string to pull the cable down in order to allow the armors to balance themselves while RIH. Head tension should be tool weight in fluid. If head tension
drops, you are moving too fast (this is dependent on the shape of the well).
In a stuck tool situation, the following must be taken into consideration before attempting to free the tool - tool weight in mud, cable weight in mud, depth of the tool string, well configuration (deviation, "S"
shaped, "cork screwed").
When attempting to free the tool, pull to max safe pull .
Monitor head tension until you get an indication that any over-pull that you created at surface has had time to work its way down to the tool.
Hold this tension for a few minutes (after seeing an increase in head tension) and see if the tool comes free.
When reducing tension , do not go below cable weight in fluid.
Allow the reduced tension to work its way to the tool string and observe head tension. Do not "work" the cable quickly thinking that changes in tension at surface will immediately transfer to the tool.
"Working" the cable too fast contributes to the imbalance of torque in the cable and can lead to premature cable failure resulting in a fishing operation with cable on top of the tool.
