a)

Newton's three (3) fundamental laws were formulated by Sir Isaac Newton in the
latter part of the seventeenth century. By providing the related equations, explain the
Newton's three (3) fundamental laws.

b)

A 65 kg astronaut standing on the Mercury surface. Calculate the astronaut weight


using:
i)

Newton's law of universal gravitation where:


Constant of gravitation = 6.673 x (10"11) m3/(kg.s2)
Mass of Mercury
= 3.227 x (1023) kg
Radius of the Mercury = 5000 x (103) m
g(mercury) = 3 . 4 7 m / S 2

The crate shown in Figure 1 is supported by three cables in equilibrium condition.


Given that the tension in cable AB is 3 kN, determine the weight of the crate.

Determine the resultant forces of this system and identify the point location where

a)

A 6.5 m ladder AB of mass 10 kg leans against a wall as shown in Figure 3. Given


that the coefficient of static friction us is the same at both surfaces of contact. Identify
the smallest value of Ms for which equilibrium can be maintained.

Figure 5 shows a ski jumper starts with a horizontal take off velocity of 25 m/s and
lands on a straight landing hill inclined at 30. Determine:

a)

A 50 N package is projected up a 20 incline from point A to point B with initial


velocity 40 m/s as shown in Figure 7. Given that the coefficient of kinetic friction
between the package and the incline is 0.15, determine:
