sometimeswithoutregardtostreetnamesassignposttohistory.For
historianAmbethOcampo,oldnamesofthestreetsofManila,inone
wayreaffirmedandenhancedourculture.
FormernamesofsomestreetsinBinondowerementionedbyJoseRizal
inhisnovels.CalleSacristia(nowOngpinstreet)wasthestreet
whereRizalsleadingcharacterCrisostomoIbarrawalkedtheold
Tinientebacktohisbarracks.ThehouseofrichIndioDonCapitan
TiagodelosSantoswaslocatedinCalleAnloague(nowJuanLuna).
Onlyacenturyago,thesurroundingblocksofMalateandErmitawere
traverseonlybyCalleReal(nowM.H.delPilarStreet)andCalle
Nueva(nowAMabiniStreet)thatfollowedthecurveoftheBayand
ledtoCavitesport.TodaysRoxasBoulevardwasunderwaterthen.
Alongthetwomainroadswerehousesandricefieldspunctuatedbythe
churchesofMalateandErmitaandthemilitaryinstallationslike
PlazaMilitarandFortSanAntonioAbad.
AftertheFilipinoAmericanWar,newstreetswerelaidoutfollowing
theBurnhamPlan.InMalateforinstance,streetswerenamedafterthe
USstatesthatsentvolunteerstocrushAguinaldosarmy.Today,those
streetswererenamedafterFilipinospatriotssomebecamekeyplayers
inAguinaldosgovernment.
ItisfascinatingtolearnthatManilasrichheritageisreflected
initsstreets.Belowisalistofcurrentstreetnamesandthelittle
historybehindit:
AndresSorianoAvenueinIntramuroswasformerlycalledtheAduana,
aftertheSpanishcustomhousewhoseruinsstandonthestreet.The
streetwasrenamedafterafamousbusinessmanwhoorganizedthe
SorianoyCia(CiaisnotaSpanishsurnamebutanacronymfor
companiaorcompany).HebeganhiscareerasanaccountantofSan
MiguelBrewery.
OngpinformerlycalledCalleSacristiaafterthesacristyofBinondo
Churchwhoseentranceislocatedalongthestreet.Itwasrenamedin
1915inhonorofRomanOngpin,aFilipinoChinesephilanthropistwho
alsoownedanartsupplystoreinthedistrict.
JuanLunainBinondowascalledCalleAnloague,whichmeans
carpenterswhoseshopsusedtoaboundtheplace.Itwasrenamedin
the1913afterthegreatFilipinopainterJuanLuna.
QuintinParadesinBinondoistheoldCalleRosarioafterthe

SabinoPadillaislocatedinBinondowasformerlycalledGandara
Street,namedin1868afterGovernorGeneralJoseselaGandarawho
establishedthetelegraphsystemandDepartmentofMinesinthe
colony,includingtheconstructionoflighthouses.Thestreetwasonce
aresidentialstreetofmansionsthatbecamefamousforitsbrilliant
socialgatheringduringGeneralDespujolstime.Itwasrenamedin
1995afterSabinoPadilla,JudgeoftheCourtofAppealsandlater
AssociateJusticeoftheSupremeCourt.
A.H.LacsonislocatedinSampaloc.Itwasnamedafteraformermayor
ofManila,ArsenioH.Lacson,generallyconsideredoneofthebest
mayorsthecityeverhad.
ThestreetwasoriginallycalledGovernorForbes,inmemoryofa
populargovernor,WilliamCameronForbes.Hewascreditedwithhaving
carvedBaguiooutofthemountains,agrandsonofAmericanwriter
RalphWaldoEmerson.ForbeswassupposedtoberenamedasAlfonsoE.
Mendoza.ItwasnotimplementedbecauseofRA6215whichapprovedin
the1971therenamingofthestreettoArsenioLacson.
Thestreetisstillreferredtobyoldfolksas,Forbes,pronouncedin
twosyllablesasforbes.
N.S.AmorantoAvenuewasformerlyknownasRetiro,afterJoseRizals
poemAmiretiro.Thestreetwasrenamedafterthefamouspolitician
NorbertoS.Amoranto.
G.TuazoninSampalocwasknowntobeBalicBalicafterthemedicinal
plant.ThelandwasdonatedbytheheirsofGregorioTuasonoftheSon
Tuaclan.SonTuawasaChineseimmigrantwhohelpedtheSpaniards
quelltherebellionoftheChineseinthePariandistrict.Asa
reward,theSpanishgovernmentgavehimvasttractoflandsstretching
fromManilauptowhatweknowasQuezonCity.

fragrantwhiteflowerknowninFilipinoasRosal.Itwasalsoonce
knownasPalomar,Spanishpigeonhouseafterinbecamenotoriousfor
beingtheredlightdistrictofOldManila.ThemayorofManilaJusto
LukbandeportedprostitutestoDavaoandrenamedthestreetafter
GeneralLicerioGeronimo,commanderofthefamousFilipinoforce

DosCastillasinSampaloc,whereoneendofthestreetleadstothe

CastilleregionofSpain,LeonandAragon,withthemarriageofLeon
