Funding for Postgraduate Study

University Awards and Funding Schemes

The University promotes and in some cases co-funds a number of awards schemes for research and
masters students. An extensive and regularly updated list of these awards is available on our
website:
Overseas Students: www.st-andrews.ac.uk/admissions/pg/financialinformation/financing/awards/
Home (UK/EU Students): www.standrews.ac.uk/admissions/pg/financialinformation/financing/ukeuawards/
Please read through the appropriate list carefully to find out the awards for which you may be
eligible, and read the information provided (including that on external websites to which the list
directs you) to check you meet all the criteria before applying.
Please also check the New Scholarships page, which highlights new awards as they become
available: www.st-andrews.ac.uk/admissions/pg/financialinformation/financing/newscholarships/

Recent Graduate Discount

This initiative offers a 10% discount on tuition fees to St Andrews graduates who have graduated
during the last three years. You can view the eligibility guidelines for the scheme on this page of our
website: www.st-andrews.ac.uk/admissions/pg/financialinformation/financing/recentgraduate/

School Funding
Some Academic Schools offer a number of full or partial University studentships, made possible
through donated funds, internal funds and/or Research Council funding. These range from Home or
Overseas fee waivers alone to fee coverage plus a full maintenance stipend at Research Council
levels. Some Schools also offer funding for masters courses.
Check with your Academic School or prospective supervisor to see whether there are any internal
studentships or other awards available. Any School that has funding to offer will usually advertise
this on their own website. A list of the School funding webpages is available here:
www.st-andrews.ac.uk/admissions/pg/financialinformation/financing/fundingbyschool/

UK Research Council Funding

The Research Councils are the public bodies charged with investing UK tax payers money in science
and research. Each is responsible for its own range of subjects and has different procedures and
regulations.
Research Council studentships require the students to meet UK residency requirements for a full
fees and stipend studentship award. EU students are usually eligible for fees only awards.

Overseas (non-EU) students are usually not eligible for Research Council funding, with the exception
of occasional funded projects that can only be applied for when advertised.
Most Research Council awards are for research rather than taught (masters) courses, although
masters funding may be available in some cases. See the above pages or the relevant Research
Council website for further information.
See the University webpage below for more details: www.standrews.ac.uk/admissions/pg/financialinformation/financing/researchcouncil/

Scottish Government Funding

Postgraduate Tuition Fee Loans (PTFL)
The Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) offers tuition fee support for certain full-time

The loans, which cover up to 3,400 (up to 1,700 for part-time students), are normally available to
students resident in Scotland, or normally resident in an EU country outside the UK. For more
details see: www.standrews.ac.uk/admissions/pg/financialinformation/financing/PostgraduateTuitionFeeLoansPTFL/
