drive along the famous Brenta Riviera. See the magnificent classical villas that
were once the summer residences of the Venetian nobility. Your route takes you
south, past the university city of Bologna and follows the river Reno high into
the Apennines. Continue through the peaceful landscapes of Tuscany.
En route, hear an informative tutorial about the famous Chianti wines that make
this region so famous. On arrival in the Renaissance city of Florence, with a
local guide, visit the Academy Museum to see Michelangelo’s original ‘Statue
of David’. Afterwards, walk to the marble clad Cathedral and Baptistery, where
Ghiberti’s ‘Gates of Paradise’ have been recreated in all their glory. Next stop
is Signoria Square, political heart of the city and still an open air gallery of
Renaissance masterpieces. Finally, visit the church of Santa Croce to see the

cDAY 1 – ITALIAN LAKES. Welcome to Italy! On arrival at Malpensa Airport,
Insight’s Airport Shuttle Service departs for your Baveno hotel in the Italian
Lake District at 09:00 & 12:30. Later, enjoy a Welcome Drink. Hotel: Simplon
DAY 2 – ITALIAN LAKES The Italian Lake District has long been a favourite
retreat of the rich and famous and this will come as no surprise once you’ve
spent a full day in the lovely lakeside resort of Stresa. Your Tour Director is on
hand to help, then the rest of the day is up to you. You can take a short boat
ride to the island of Isola Bella, renowned for its palace and Botanical Gardens
or jump on a cable car to the summit of Mottarone. Later, admire the many rich
colours cast by the setting sun on the surrounding mountains. (BB)
s Alternatively, get a feel for the Lake District on our ‘Three Lakes Experience’.
Visit the Swiss resort of Lugano, Lake Como, and the Villa Carlotta where every

e DAY 3 – ITALIAN LAKES – VERONA – VENICE This morning continue
east to the elegant city of Verona, legendary home of Romeo and Juliet. An
included walk takes you past the Roman Arena to the balcony in the courtyard
of the Capulet home. Time free for browsing around the local market before
continuing to your hotel on the delightful Venice Lido. Hotel: Villa Mabapa. (BB)
eDAY 4 – VENICE. Sit back in your private launch and enjoy your introduction
to this unique city of palaces, canals and gondolas. Disembark near the Bridge
of Sighs before standing in awe at the marble arcades of Piazza San Marco. You
could spend the rest of the day right here if you like; the belltower, St Mark’s
Basilica, and Doges’ Palace are all worth a visit. Others may prefer to lose
themselves in the back lanes and small squares, where tourists seldom tread. (BB)
s Distilling the riches of Venice into a day is difficult, but our ‘Venice
Experience’ does exactly that. A private guided tour shows you the interior of
St Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace and Bridge of Sighs. Lunch is included on
the colourful island of Burano, famous for its lace and leaning campanile.
As evening falls, you could dine al-fresco on the Lido or board a vaporetto
(waterbus) to other parts of Venice. One suggestion is to head for Piazza San
Marco for an after dinner drink while string ensembles play some of Italy’s best
loved music. Perhaps complete your experience with a magical gondola ride?
DAY 5 – VENICE – BOLOGNA – FLORENCE. Cross the fertile Po Plain to
Bologna, with its numerous medieval towers and long arcaded streets. Perhaps
sample the delicious ‘Bolognese’ cuisine over lunch or simply relax with a coffee
before continuing to Florence. Your love affair with the city begins on arrival
with an included orientation and views over the city. Hotel: NH Firenze (BB)
e DAYS 6 & 7 – FLORENCE. Accompany your Tour Director to Santa Croce
square in the city centre. The tombs of Michelangelo and Galileo are located
in the adjoining Basilica, a great place to launch your two days of exploration.
Everything is easily reached on foot. Cross the Ponte Vecchio or relax amid the
terraces of the Boboli Gardens. The choice is yours, but do not miss the world
famous works of art in the magnificent museums and galleries. (BB)
s The riches of the Renaissance are explained on our ‘Florence Experience’.
Admire Michelangelo’s original ‘David’, visit the Uffizi to see Botticelli’s ‘Birth
of Venus’, see the Cathedral, belltower and baptistery, and visit Signoria
Square. Complete your day with an ‘aperitivo’ and typical Tuscan ‘crostini’.
s Your second day could be devoted to the delights of the Tuscan countryside.
Drive through picture perfect scenery on our ‘Tuscany Experience’. Visits are
made to the medieval hilltop village of San Gimignano and Siena. Later enjoy
an afternoon drive to a Tuscan “castello” for Chianti wine tasting and dinner.
This evening, after dinner, maybe try the ice-cream at a famous gelato shop off
Piazza Santa Croce? Buon Appetito!
DAY 8 – FLORENCE – SORRENTO Drive south along the ‘Highway of the
Sun’ past Naples, nestling in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, to the cliff-top
resort of Sorrento. Hotel: Corallo (BB)
eDAYS 9 & 10 – SORRENTO Join your Tour Director for a morning stroll
through this beautiful resort with stunning views over the Gulf of Naples. Maybe
relax over coffee in Piazza Tasso and contemplate your options for the next day
or so. Join the locals at the Tuesday market, stroll down to the harbour, or take
a swim from the foot of the cliffs. Sorrento is also a great base for exploring
the neighbouring area with Naples and Pompeii only a short train ride away.
Alternatively, we have great experiences for each day of your stay. (BB)
s First up, our ‘Pompeii & Capri Experience’, brings you to Pompeii, where a local
guide walks you through the ill-fated city. Continue to Naples to board your
hydrofoil to the island of Capri. A spectacular drive up to Anacapri is followed
by a cable lift ride. After an included light lunch, descend to Capri town for
views of the Faraglioni rocks. A funicular takes you down to the marina, and
back to Sorrento.
s On your other free day you might like to opt for our ‘Amalfi Coast Experience’.
Witness spectacular scenery on a special drive along the Amalfi Coast, with
stops in Cavi dei Marini and Amalfi. Then, transfer to special minibuses in order
to visit the exclusive artists’ paradise of Positano, clinging to the cliff face, for
delicious canapés and light refreshments.
In the evening, Sorrento bars and cafés spring to life. It’s also the time when
the locals work up an appetite on a traditional evening stroll (passeggiata) - it’s
fascinating to watch and even more fun to join in.
DAY 11 – SORRENTO – ROME F Leave now with Itinerary Flexibility (see left)
or continue to Rome. Drive around the Gulf of Naples and travel north past the
Monastery of Monte Cassino, scene of a fierce battle in World War II. Climb up
to the pleasant hilltop town of Tivoli for an optional visit to the amazing water
gardens of the Villa d’Este. Continue past the sulphurous springs at Bagni di
Tivoli to reach the ‘eternal city’ of Rome. Hotel: Massimo D’Azeglio (BB)
eDAYS 12 & 13 – ROME. To get you started, an included orientation drive
shows you Rome’s top highlights to help you plan your sightseeing. Alight
outside the Colosseum. From here Rome’s archaeological wealth lies before
you. Walk in the steps of Julius Caesar or take the modern day Metro, which will
whisk you to other parts of the city. If you’d rather a local expert help you piece
together Rome’s many wonders, then perhaps consider the following...
s The ‘Experience of Ancient Rome’ where you ascend the Capitoline Hill
and visit the Forum. After refreshing ‘gelato’ you’ll also visit the Colosseum,
Palatine Hill, Pantheon and the Catacombs of the Appian Way.
s Explore the Vatican City on our ‘Papal Rome Experience!’ Here a resident
expert walks you through the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Then visit

and international airline fuel surcharges or fare increases
