BJSC Junior Surfing Team Selection Policy

1.0 Objectives:

To select athletes and support staff, to represent the Barbados Junior Surfing Club (hereinafter
“BJSC”) at selected international surfing events. The BJSC Team Members will be eligible for
funding to attend selected events. The amount of funding per event and selected team members is at
the discretion of the BJSC Executive Committee.

2.0 BJSC Team Selection Panel:

The BJSC Team Selection Panel will comprise of:

- President
- Vice President
- Two other representatives of the Executive Committee
- Coach (where applicable)
- Head Judge (where applicable)

3.0 BJSC Team Selection Criteria:

3.1 Eligibility for Selection:

To be eligible for selection in the BJSC Team athletes must:

3.1.1 Be a Barbadian resident/citizen

3.1.2 Be a registered member of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club

3.1.3 Be of the correct age and sex to fulfill the entry requirements for respective division at
the selected event

3.1.4 Athlete’s ages are typically taken from the 1st of January of the year of the
International competition, but requirements may differ dependent on event’s criteria.

3.1.5 Demonstrated outstanding competitive performances in the period leading up to Event.

3.1.6 Demonstrated positive attitude towards representing the BJSC at an International level.

3.2 The BJSC Junior Surfing Team:

3.2.1 The BJSC Team Selection Panel will determine from time to time the key regional or
international events which it deems beneficial for the BJSC junior members to attend
for the purpose of competitive surfing experience and exposure.

3.2.2 The BJSC Team Selection Panel will determine the appropriate divisions from each
requisite event for which it wishes to enter a BJSC Team.

3.2.3 BJSC Team numbers per division are at the discretion of the BJSC Team Selection
Panel.

3.2.4 The BJSC Team will be selected prioritized by the individual competitor’s overall series
ranking in the BJSC Burkie Junior Surfing Series for the corresponding divisions of the
international event.

For example, where three (3) BJSC Team members are required for a 12 & Under Boys
Division at an international event, the first three Team berths will be allocated to the
competitors ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd on adjusted overall series ranking (see 3.2.5 and 3.2.6
below) in that corresponding division in the BJSC Burkie Junior Surfing Series.

3.2.5 Overall series ranking will be taken from cumulative points in the respective division as
at the closest BJSC Burkie Junior Surfing Series event leading up to the international
contest.

3.2.6 In determining overall series ranking the competitor’s worst result to that point will be
dropped, given that at least two (2) events of the BJSC Burkie Junior Surfing Series
have been completed.

3.2.7 If the BJSC Team Selection Panel deems it appropriate to submit a team for a division in
which there is no corresponding division in our BJSC Burkie Junior Surfing Series, the
BJSC Team Selection Panel may at its discretion hold a one off contest for that division
to determine the BJSC Team.

3.2.8 Where the BJSC is required to provide competitor seedings for the international event
these seedings will follow the seedings in the BJSC Burkie Junior Surfing Series as at
the closest event leading up to the international contest. Seedings will be based on the
adjusted overall series ranking (see 3.2.6).

3.2.9 Also impacting the selection criteria will be:

(a) The athlete’s performances at any preliminary training camp (if held),
(b) The athlete’s fitness level and overall attitude,
(c) The athlete must be able to fulfill the any particular entry requirements for the
respective division they wish to enter. For example, if a female competitor is
ranked 1st and a male competitor is ranked second in the BJSC Under 16 division,
the female competitor will not be eligible for a Boys U16 Division and the first
Team berth for that division would be allocated to the male competitor.

3.3 Reserves/Alternates Selection Criteria:

In the case of a selected BJSC Team member incurring injury or be unable to compete at
the selected Event, the BJSC Selection Panel will allocate the Team berth to another

competitor in the appropriate Age Division based on the following criteria:

3.3.1 The allocation of the Team berth will be prioritized by their competitor ranking in the
BJSC Burkie Junior Surfing Series.

3.3.2 The competitor must have demonstrated outstanding competitive performances in the
period leading up to the event.

3.3.3 The competitor must have demonstrated positive attitude towards representing the BJSC
at an International level.

4.0 Selection Criteria for Team Support Staff:

Selection of Team Coaches:

4.1.1 Selection of BJSC Coach is mandatory. If the head coach is unavailable then appointment
of the replacement lies with the BJSC Selection Panel

4.1.2 Coaches will be selected by the BJSC selection panel.

Criteria for Team Coach Selection:

4.2.1 Coaches must have demonstrated experience working with elite surfing athletes, with
preferred competition & or coaching experience at international surfing events.

4.2.2 Demonstrated experience working in an intensive team environment and be capable of


working within team harmonics.

4.2.3 Training and/or accreditation in surf coaching is preferred.

Selection of Team Management:

4.3.1 Team Manager and Assistant Manager (where applicable) will be selected by the BJSC
Selection Panel.

Selection Criteria for Team Manager’s

4.4.1 Extensive knowledge and understanding of the Barbados Junior Surfing Club, its role in
International competition (including the ISA) and its programs

4.4.2 Demonstrated ability to successfully manage a large team of junior athletes and support
staff in a major event environment (over a 1-2 week period).

4.4.3 Demonstrated ability to plan and implement all team media, including daily press releases
and website requirements. Ability to liaise with International media

4.4.4 Demonstrated ability to relate to junior athletes and coaches whilst playing a pivotal role
in team harmonics and discipline.

4.4.5 Preferred coaching history and or current accreditations, providing an understanding of
elite coaching strategies and athletes requirements for major events.

5.0 Overriding factors - Illness/misadventure/extenuating circumstances

In considering the selection of BJSC Team Members the Selection Panel may in their
discretion give weight to extenuating factors.

Athletes unable to compete at events, trials, training camps or other attendances required
under this policy must advise the BJSC President and/or selected Team Coach in writing of
this fact and the reasons therefore before the commencement of events, trials, training
camps or other attendances required under this policy.

In cases of illness or injury, athletes may be required to undergo a medical examination by


a doctor or doctors nominated by the BJSC.
