The department was established in 1994/1995 academic year. It first started together with the department of
accounting studies. It therefore department became autonomous in 1997after it was accredited by the
national accreditation Board. The first batch of students was produced in 1997. They were twenty three in
number; second batch was forty six and the third batch was one hundred and two. Since then the department
has seen tremendous improvements in all spheres of its academic repertoire.
It is good to note that whatever your background, it is likely that you have experience of marketing or being
marketed to; you may have experience of paid marketing employment or voluntary marketing activity. Better
still you may have experience of witnessing companies marketing efforts. Thus, marketing permeates every
aspect of mans life. People continue to desire the best for themselves and the people they relate to.
Whatever your experience, you are bound to have ideas about what an effective and a good marketing
manager is; they make things happen. They are innovative, creative and continually matching the everincreasing dynamism of todays customers needs and preferences. This is quintessentially, what the HND
marketing programme prepares you to be.
The Cape Coast Polytechnic Marketing Studies will prepare you for the challenges of middle level marketing
management in whatever organization you choose.
Whether you go on to manage others, or are managed, HND marketing represents an essential investment in
your future career. Marketing managers need to be multi-takers. They need to understand how to motivate
staff and how to get the best performance from people; how to market their products or services and meet the
demands of their consumers; how to implement processes and systems; and how to manage budgets and
understand the impact that financial performance has on strategic marketing decision-making. Crucially, they
need to understand how all of these activities fit within the context of a rapidly changing, global market
place.

OVERVIEW OF THE CONTENT AND STRUCTURE OF MARKETING MANAGEMENT

STUDIES
Marketing management studies belongs to the behavioral sciences and encapsulates courses from
anthropology to zoology. The diverse nature of marketing management equips our graduates with very broad
knowledge of courses. Marketing spans almost every discipline and one author has quipped, marketing is a
span of aggregates and puts students on a very good pedestal to adapt to every social or human
situation past students encounter. Those who go through the course successfully have a lot of opportunities
open to them in both the civil and public services as well private firms and students can spot opportunities in
the boundless world of work, it is only a matter of switching ones mind to encounter a work situation. It is
only the lazy who has work opportunities closed to him or her. Students are taken through industrial
internships before they graduate. The internships are mandatory.
6

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Prospects of the HND Statistics Programme

Academic Prospects
Many careers in the field of statistics require a Masters degree or PhD in a specialized statistical
field. HND Statistics will provide you with the needed skills and practicality in the field of statistics
for future academic progression. With HND Statistics, you would be able to continue in the
Polytechnic (18 months top-up for a degree) or University (two years top-up) in the area of:

Statistics
Mathematics
Actuarial Science
Statistics and Economics
Statistics and Mathematics

Job Prospects
Statisticianscollect and analyze data, then calculate results using a specific design. They draw
conclusions and make decisions in the face of uncertainty. HND Statistics is recognized
everywhere and are employed in so many fields, such as National Statistical Service, Banks,
Insurance Companies, Health (Hospitals, Clinics, etc.), NGOs (WHO, FHI, GHAIDS, etc), Birth
And Deaths Registry, Educational institutions, Research institutions, etc.
In Medicine (as Biostatistician)
Statisticians work with medical teams to design experiments and analyse the complex data they
produce to improved medical treatments.
Environment (as Monitoring & Evaluation Officer)
Statisticians help in uncovering the meaning of incomplete or uncertain data on the abundance and
location of plants and animals, on the spread of pollution from its sources, and on the possible
effects of changes in human activities.
Industry (as Quality Assurance Officer)
The future of many industries and their employees depends on improvement in the quality of goods
and services and the efficiency with which they are produced and delivered. Improvement should be
based on data, rather than guesswork. More companies are installing elaborate systems to collect
and act on data to better serve their customers.
Government Surveys (as Government Statistician or Researcher)
How many people are unemployed this month? What do we export, and what do we import? Are
rates of violent crime increasing or decreasing? The government wants data on issues such as these
to guide policy, and government statistics agencies (eg. Ghana Statistical Service) provide them by
surveys of households and businesses.
Research Firm (work for already established firm or open your own firm)
-as Market Researcher
Are consumer tastes in television programs changing? What are promising locations for a new retail
outlet? Market researchers use both government data and their own surveys to answer questions
22

such as these. Statisticians design the elaborate surveys that gather data for both public and private
use.
as Pollster
During election, most political parties normally seek the advice and services of pollsters to know
their faith in an upcoming election. This is normally done through opinion polls.

HND TOURISM
The Department of Tourism was established in October 2000 to run an HND programme in
Tourism and Hospitality Studies. In line with the vision of the Department, it offers various courses
to prepare students to work in middle-level management positions in tourism, hospitality and other
service industries or establish their own businesses in the field, and thereby contribute to the
economic and social development of the country.

Rationale for Setting Upthe Department of Tourism

Recognizing the immense contributions that the Tourism and Hospitality Industry can make to the
economic and social development of the country, especially in dealing with the problem of
unemployment, the Government of Ghana established the Ministry of Tourism (MoT)as a singleportfolio ministry in March 1993, providing the opportunity for tourism to be given proper direction
and management to become a leading economic sector of the country. Previously existing tourism
agencies were placed under the new MoT. These agencies include the Ghana Tourism Authority
(formerly, Ghana Tourist Board); the Ghana Tourist Development Company (GTDC); and the
Hotel Catering Tourism Training Centre (HOTCATT) (National Tourism Development Plan for
Ghana 1996-2010).

In order to ensure the proper development of tourism in the country with respect to both the public
and private sector, the National Tourism Plan then encouraged the setting up of both public and
private sector tourism and hospitality education and training institutions to train professionals for
the effective development of the sector. The foregoing, in addition to the Polytechnics location in
Cape Coast, dubbed as The Heartbeat of Tourism in Ghana, motivated the setting up of Tourism
Department in October 2000. It was established to train students to occupy middle-level positions in
tourism and hospitality in both government and private sector organisations such as the Ministry of
Tourism, Ghana Tourism Authority, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies,
Environmental Protection Agency, National Parks, Theme Parks, Tour and Travel Agencies,
Information Centres, Convention Bureaus, Consultancies and Educational Institutions. Indeed, the
Department has played this role over the years and is still doing so; and has its graduates manning
23

positions in tourism, hospitality, and other service sectors contributing to the economic and social
development of the country.

Focus of Training
Reflecting the Government of Ghanas master plan to strengthen technical and vocational education
and training (TVET) in the country, and the Polytechnics Strategic Plan, the education and training
of students has been tailored to the delivery of competency-based courses to ensure that students are
predominantly able to put the attitudes, values, knowledge, theories and skills taught into practice.
This would ensure that students come out of the Department as true professionals able to put all
they are taught into practice. All the courses in the programme have been chosen to contribute to an
optimal functioning of students in society and in their future workand careers because they have
practical relevance for the industry. Students are also taught problem solving, critical and creative
thinking skills, communication, presentation, and team building skills in the delivery of courses to
them.
The HND Tourism programme has been deliberately shaped to avoid a duplication of programmes
being pursued in other Polytechnics. The programme is unique because it blends associated
programmes that are not readily available in other polytechnics countrywide.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The objectives of the Department are to:
apply competency-based training in the field of Tourism and Hospitality in producing effective,
knowledgeable, competent and skilled professionals for the industry;
fulfil the needs and expectations of the Tourism and Hospitality sector regarding the training of
competent and effective middle-level manpower;
enhance collaboration between the Polytechnic and industry, thereby helping toenhance the
competency-based trainingof our students; and,
create an integrated and focused strategy to contribute to the effective development of Tourism
and Hospitality Education and Training in the country, which would enhance the successful
development of the Tourism and Hospitality industry in Ghana.

Career Opportunities
The programme offers students and graduates job opportunities in all sectors of the tourism and
hospitality industry including cabin crew, travel agents and advisors, tour guiding, tour operations,
managing hotels or restaurants and other tourism facilities including attraction sites, front office
persons or receptionists. There are opportunities also as tourism, research and quality assurance
24

officers in national and regional tourism offices playing several roles in the sector. Research has
proven that our graduates apart from having various jobs in the tourism and hospitality industry also
get employed in service and other industries such as banking and finance, immigration, shipping,
local government, mining, education, security services and so on.
