The Earth Charter Initiative
 “We stand at a critical moment in Earth's history, a time when humanity must
choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and
fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise. ”
 “The dominant patterns of production and consumption are causing
environmental devastation, the depletion of resources, and a massive
extinction of species. Communities are being undermined.”
 It is necessary to “Adopt patterns of production, consumption, and reproduction
that safeguard Earth's regenerative capacities, human rights, and community
well-being.”
The Earth Chapter invites to a profound change of the economic system
Challenge: Deconstruct responsibly and construct new consensus

Systemic Crisis
 Necessary to change the domineering
system, especially the economic one.
 Money, originally to get goods, is now
the final goal of the economic activity
 Natural resources, products, goods and
people’s labor are means to get money
 It isn’t possible to extract permanently
from a finite planet.
 Sustainability isn’t in the nature of the
Capitalist Economy
New Agricultural Paradigm
Industrialized agriculture and its Traditional agriculture and

resulting from financial  Supports local production
speculation and consumption in network
What’s at Stake and
Challenges
(SESF Santa María, RS, Brazil 2010)
1. Build networks and solidarity-based articulations
with partners and affiliates
2. Integrate the economic process in a sustainable
system
3. Focus from human rights (UN Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights)
5. Dialog with the society
 Critics to the neoliberal system
 Exhibition of the proposals to replace it.
5. Certification of solidarity-based products-services
 At local, regional, national, Latin-American and global level
5. Use of social local currencies and barter systems
6. People’s training and education
7. Adaptability and mitigation of the climate change
Differences in the logic,
nature and focuses
Capitalist Economy: a linear and excluding process goes on

Extraction Transformation Commercialization Consumption Final Disposal

Solidarity Economy: Shapes an

ecosystem; every process step needs to
be sustainable and solidarity-based
Solidarity in the whole
process

When a cycle link isn’t solidarity-

based, the economy is kidnapped by
the exploiting system.

It’s necessary to distinguish the difference in the focuses

THE THREE STRATEGIES
• of the Solidarity Economy
STRATEGY 1
Work in Network

Education and formation to work in

solidarity-based networks.
This articulates and favors the exchange and
cooperation
The society is enriched while its members
improve
STRATEGY 2
Incorporation of Local Cultural Values

 So that the value

of our culture and
land should
remain at our
 work ourwe
So that products
should earn according
to the value and without giving
our labor
STRATEGY3
Responsible Consumption
and Production

I consume what the

network produces and I produce
what the network consumes
