Definition
AFrenkeldefect,Frenkelpair,orFrenkeldisorderisatypeofpointdefectinacrystallattice.The
defectformswhenanatomorsmallerion(usuallycation)leavesitsplaceinthelattice,creatingavacancy,
andbecomesaninterstitialbylodginginanearbylocation.Theirprimemechanismofgenerationisby
particleirradiation,astheirequilibriumconcentrationaccordingtotheBoltzmanndistributionismuch
smallerthanthepurevacanciesdistribution,duetothelargeenergynecessaryforthecreationofthe
associatedinterstitialatoms.ThephenomenonisnamedaftertheSovietphysicistYakovFrenkel,who
discovereditin1926.[2]
EffectonDensity
Thisdefectdoesnothaveanyimpactonthedensityofthesolidasitinvolvesonlythemigrationoftheions
withinthecrystal,thuspreservingboththevolumeaswellasmass.
