For immediate release

Lieutenant Governor to visit Cornwall and Akwesasne


Toronto, May 30, 2016. Her Honour the Hon. Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario,
will conduct an official visit to Cornwall on Tuesday, May 31, 2016. The Lieutenant Governor will also
conduct a visit to the traditional territory of the Mohawks of Akwesasne. The visit is part of Her Honours
continued program of travel to communities across the province.

Itinerary
Tuesday, May 31, 2016
9:30 a.m. Visit to Cornwall City Hall
360 Pitt Street, Cornwall
The Lieutenant Governor will be received in a private courtesy call with Cornwall Mayor Leslie
OShaughnessy and Grand Chief Abram Benedict of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. The
Lieutenant Governor will then participate in a roundtable with city councillors, staff, and local First
Nations district chiefs focusing on sustainability in Cornwall and the surrounding area. Her Honour will
then deliver remarks during a reception.

11:50 a.m. Arrival at Akwesasne
Tri-District Elders Lodge, 11 Community Centre Road, Akwesasne
Greeted by Grand Chief Abram Benedict of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, the Lieutenant
Governor will participate in an Edge of the Woods Ceremony before entering the traditional territory of
the Mohawks of Akwesasne.

12:15 p.m. Community lunch
Tri-District Elders Lodge, 11 Community Centre Road, Akwesasne
The Lieutenant Governor will be the guest of honour at a lunch hosted by the Mohawk Council of
Akwesasne. Her Honour will join the Grand Chief, elders, and community leaders in conversation and
will join in the exchange of traditional gifts.

Peace Tree Trade Centre, 167 International Road


While visiting the Akwesasne Economic Development Agency Training Centre, the Lieutenant
Governor will meet with students and teachers of the adult language program and the Skawatsira
Mohawk Language Program.

2:00 p.m. Visit to the Akwesasne Environment Department
Cornwall Island Administration Building 3, 101 Tewasateni Road, Akwesasne
The Lieutenant Governor will meet staff working in the Environment Department of the Mohawk Council
of Akwesasne and will learn about local environmental initiatives.

2:45 p.m. Visit to the Native North American Travelling College
1 Ronathahon:ni Lane, Akwesasne
The Lieutenant Governor will learn about the communitys history and local music traditions during a
visit to the Native North American Travelling College, which was founded in 1969 to promote
understanding of Akwesanes culture and heritage.
