WhatAreDemons?
heBibleprovidesabundantevidenceoftheexistenceofdemons.Satansevilangelsareknownin
Scriptureasdemons.WeknowfromcertainScripturesthatSatanfellfromheavenandother
angelicbeings(demons)sharedinSatansfallandbecameevil(Ezekiel28:18Matthew
25:41Revelation12:4).
ThewordfordemonsintheGreeklanguageisdaimonandisfoundmorethan75timesintheGreek
NewTestament.IneachcaseitistranslatedbytheworddevilintheKingJamesVersion.
InJesusChriststeachingsandministryHeoftenconfronteddemonsandtheiractivities,i.e.,demonic
possessionofindividuals(Matthew12:2229,15:2228,25:41Mark5:116).ChristdemonstratedHis
poweroverdemonsand,furthermore,HegaveHisdisciplespowertocastoutdemons(Matthew10:1).

TheoriesSurroundingtheOriginofDemons
Thereareanumberofsuggestionoriginsofdemons,withthemostlogicalbeingthattheyarefallen
angels.
Theyarespiritsofdeceasedwickedmen.However,thiscannotbe,fortheBibledeclaresthe
unsaveddeadareinHadesandnotroamingtheearth(Psalm9:17Luke16:23Revelation20:13).
TheyarespiritsofapreAdamicrace.Butthereisnoscripturalsupportwhatsoeverforthisview.The
BibledeclaresthatAdamwasthefirstman(1Corinthians15:45).
TheyarethespiritsfromtheunnaturalunionbetweenangelsandwomeninGenesis6.However,this
view,liketheprevioustwo,iswithouttheslightestBiblicalsupport.
Themostlogicalconclusionisthattheworddemonissimplyanothertitleornameforfallenangels.

TwoGreekwordsaretranslatedsimilarlyintheNewTestamentbuttheirmeaningsareslightlydifferent.
Theworddiabolosistranslateddevilandreferstothedevilhimself.Anotherword,diamon,isusually
translateddevilsintheKingJamesVersionbutmightbebettertranslateddemons.TheBiblemakesa
veryrealdistinctionbetweenasingledevilandmanydemons.WheneverwereadofdevilsintheBible,
wearereadingaboutdemons.
ItappearsmostlikelythatdemonsarefallenangelswhorebelledagainstGodinheavenandwerecast
outofthepresenceofGod.Assuch,whatthingsaretrueaboutthenatureofgoodangelsarealsotrue
ofdemons.Whenitcomestoidentifyingdemons,thequestionthatshouldbeaskedisWheredo
demonscomefrom?Atleastfoursuggestionshavebeenmadetohelpexplaintheoriginofdemons.
SpiritsoftheDead
Onecontemporaryidearelatingtotheoriginsofdemonsclaimstheyarethespiritsoftheevildead.This
istheunderlyingassumptionofmuchofthepopularoccultliterature.Itisnotanewideaatall,foritwas
theexplanationofsomeGreekphilosophersyearsbeforeChrist.Theearlyageofthistheorydoesnot
howevermakeitanymorebelievable.Itstandsindirectconflictwithbiblicalteaching.
TheBibleteachesthatthesoulsoftheevildeadgotoHades(Luke16:23).Theywillremainthereuntil
theendofthemillennialreignofChristonthisearth.OnlythenaretheybroughtbeforeGodtobejudged
(Rev.20:11).Thentheyarecastintoeternalpunishment.

Somehavesuggestedthatdemonsaretheresultoftheunionofangelsandwomenasdescribed:
TheNephilim(giants)wereontheearthinthosedays,andalsoafterward,whenthesonsofGod
cameintothedaughtersofmanandtheyborechildrentothem.Thesewerethemightymenwho
wereofold,themenofrenown.Genesis6:4
Somesuggestthatthisversedescribessexualrelationsbetweenangelsandwomen,sincethe
expressionsonsofGodisusedelsewhereintheOldTestamenttoidentifyangels.Evenifthis
interpretationiscorrect,itisextremelyunlikelythatsuchaunionproduceddemons.Somehave
suggestedthegiantscouldbeanexpressionofthepoliticalormilitarymightofthesemen.Others
believeitcouldrefertotheresultsofgenetictamperinginapreFloodsociety.Butthereisnoscriptural
evidencetoprovethattheresultoftheunionofhumansandangelsweredemons.
PreAdamicSpirits
Oneexplanation,calledthegaptheory,presupposesthattheworldisseveralmillionyearsold.
Accordingtothistheory,Godcreatedaperfectworldandsociety,asrecordedinthefirstverseofthe
Biblebut,foronereasonoranother,GodhadtodestroyitbeforethesituationasdescribedinGenesis
1:2.Thistheoryallowedforasocietywhichexistedformillionsofyears,thusharmonizingthe
contemporaryviewsoftheageoftheworldwiththeBibleaccountofcreation.
ThespiritsofthosewholivedbeforeAdam,stillinhabitingtheeartharethedemons,accordingtothose
whoholdthisview.ButbeforewecanconcludethatdemonsarethedisembodiedspiritsofapreAdamic
race,wemustfirstprovetheexistenceofsucharace.Onceagain,mostbiblicalevidenceisagainst
suchatheory.
FallenAngels
Mostconservativescholarsbelievethatdemonsarefallenorevilangels.WhenJesusdescribedhell,he
callediteternalfirepreparedforthedevilandhisangels(Matt.25:41).JohndescribedthefallofSatan
inahighlysymbolicfashion,notingthatthedeviltookathirdoftheangelsinheavenwithhim.
Histailsweptdownathirdofthestarsofheavenandcastthemtotheearth.Andthedragonstood
beforethewomanwhowasabouttogivebirth,sothatwhensheboreherchildhemightdevourit.
Revelation12:4
ThishasledsometoconcludethatSatanwasofthreeangelsresponsible,withGabrielandMichael,to
otherangels.WhenSatanfell,athirdoftheangelswhichhehadsupervisionmayhavefollowedhimin
rebellionagainstGod.
WhenIsraelfinallypreparedtoenterthePromisedLand,GodinstructedIsraelregardingtheir
relationshiptotheoccultdemonicreligionsofCanaan.

WhenyoucomeintothelandthattheLordyourGodisgivingyou,youshallnotlearntofollowthe
abominablepracticesofthosenations.Deuteronomy18:9
DespitetheobviousimplicationthatChristiansshouldnotbeengagedinoccultpractices,somechurch
youthgatheringshaveplayedaroundwithsuchthingsasastrology,Ouijaboards,andothergamesthat
havesomerelationshiptothespirits.Onewhorecognizesbiblicalauthoritywillseektoridhislifeofany
occultinfluences.
NamesofDemonsintheBible
Inrareinstances,theBiblementionsdemonsbyname.Thesedemonshadsuchanimpactonthelives
ofbelieversthattheirpresencewarrantedmentionbythewritersofthescripture.
Molech
AlthoughthescripturesneverexplicitlyrefertoMolechasademon,theworshipofMolechwasa
recurringproblemforIsraelthroughouttheOldTestament.TheoriginofMolechworshipisunclear.
ScholarsbelievethatMolechworshipcametotheregionofCanaanwiththePhoenicians.
YoushallnotgiveanyofyourchildrentoofferthemtoMolech,andsoprofanethenameofyour
God:IamtheLord.Leviticus18:21
ThenSolomonbuiltahighplaceforChemoshtheabominationofMoab,andforMolechthe
abominationoftheAmmonites,onthemountaineastofJerusalem.1Kings11:7
OneofthemostdocumentedpracticesofMolechworshipwasthatofhumansacrifice.Molechworship
reacheditspeakduringthereignofSolomonandwouldnotbeabolisheduntilthetimeofcaptivityin
Babylon.
Legion
DemonsintheBibleoftencongregatetogetherandoneexampleisLegion.WhenJesusarrivedatthe
countryoftheGerasenes,Heencounteredapossessedmanontheoutsideofthecityinacemetery.
AndwhenJesushadsteppedoutoftheboat,immediatelytheremethimoutofthetombsaman
withanuncleanspirit.Helivedamongthetombs.Andnoonecouldbindhimanymore,notevenwith
achain,forhehadoftenbeenboundwithshacklesandchains,buthewrenchedthechainsapart,
andhebroketheshacklesinpieces.Noonehadthestrengthtosubduehim.Nightanddayamong
thetombsandonthemountainshewasalwayscryingoutandcuttinghimselfwithstones.Andwhen
hesawJesusfromafar,heranandfelldownbeforehim.Andcryingoutwithaloudvoice,hesaid,

Themanwasnotonlyconsideredamenace,buthehadsuchgreatstrengththathecouldnotbe
contained.WhenJesusspoketotheman,theDemonswithinhimreferredtothemselvesasLegion,for
therewasnotonedemonbutmany.
Abaddon/Apollyon
OneofthemostfrighteningexamplesofdemonsmentionedintheBibleisAbaddon.Abaddonis
describedbyJohnduringtheSevenTrumpetsprophecy.
Theyhaveaskingoverthemtheangelofthebottomlesspit.HisnameinHebrewisAbaddon,and
inGreekheiscalledApollyon.Revelation9:11
Whenthefifthtrumpetisblown,theabysswillopenanddemoniclocustswillbereleasedtotorture
thosewhohavenotreceivedGodsseal.TheirleaderwillbeAbaddon,oneofSatansunderlingsand
leaderoftheabyss.Abaddonwillhaveasimplemission,inflictingpainandsufferingonthosewhohave
notrespondedtoGodandacceptedJesusChristastheirsavior.
TypesofOccultSatanicWorshipintheBible
Therearemanywayssatanisworshippedthroughoccultmeansthatincludesdemonworship:
Divination
DivinationwasoneofthespecificpracticesnamedbyMosesinhisprohibitiononoccultworship(Deut.
18:10).Oftenthispracticeincludedthekillingofachickenorsomesmallanimal,andonoccasionsto
observeitslivertodeterminethestateofaffairsanddirectionoftheimmediatefuture(Ezek.21:21).
DivinationisanillegitimatemeansofdeterminingthewillofGod.TheChristiandesiringtoknowthewill
ofGodshouldconsulttheScriptures,notthestars(Ps.119:9).
Necromancy
AsecondoccultpracticeoftodaywasalsobannedbyGod.Necromancyisanefforttocommunicate
withandinterrogatethedead.AstheBibleteachesthedeadareunabletocommunicatewiththeliving
(Luke15:2731),itonlystandstoreasonthatthosewhoclaimtohavethisabilityarelyingorare
themselvesdeceived.Ineithercase,thenecromancerwasconsideredanabominationuntotheLord
(Deut.18:11,12).
Magic

Theuseofmagicformulasandincantationswasalsoforbidden.Todayitispopulartodistinguish
betweenwhiteandblackmagic,butleadingbiblicalscholarsagreethatbothformsofmagicfindtheir
sourceandstrengthindemonicpower.Thosewhopracticemagicareundercertainlimitsastowhat
theycanaccomplish(Dan.4:7).Evenwhenitappearsthatmagiciansareabletoduplicatethepowerof
God,theystillfallshortofwhatGodisabletoaccomplish(Exod.7:11,12).
Sorcery
Closelyrelatedtomagicissorcery.Magicusuallyrelatestoaccomplishingspecificactssuchasrods
becomingserpentswhereassorceryrelatesmorecloselywithcallingupondemonstocreatesituations
aroundpeople.Thustheenchanterorsorcererisonewhousesincantationsoromens.Theirpractices
mayhavealsoincludedtheuseofmoodchangingormindalteringdrugs.ThishasledsomeBible
scholarstodenouncetheuseofsuchdrugsbecausetheyareusedaspartofoccultworship.
Witchcraft
Aroundtheworldtoday,thereexistsagrowingnumberofthosewhocallthemselveswitches.Witchcraft
isdirectlyopposedtoGod(Dent.18:10).WhenSaulbecamethefirstkingofIsrael,oneofhisfirstacts
wastobanthepracticeofwitchcraftfromthekingdom(1Sam.28:9).Awitchisonewhomakesuseof
magicandsorcerytoaccomplishthewillofdemons.
Astrology
Oneoftheoldestformsoftheoccultstillpracticedtodayisastrology.Contemporaryastrologyisa
combinationofwhatastrologicalcultspracticedinBabylon,Egypt,andCanaan.InCanaan,astrology
centeredaroundthebull.Theworshipofthegoldencalf,childsacrificestoMolech,andBaalworship
wereallpartofCanaaniteastrology.TheOldTestamentisverycleartoprohibitGodspeoplefrom
involvementthere.
InEgypt,GodchallengedtheastrologicalgodsofEgyptinsendingtenplagueswhichdirectlyattacked
theauthorityofthosegods.ThehighestoftheEgyptiangodswasRa,thesungod.Threedaysof
darknesswasadirectindictmentagainstthereligionofEgypt.
WhatAreTheWorksofDemons
SeveralactivitiesareidentifiedintheBibleinwhichdemonsmaybeinvolved.Sometimestheyare
responsibleforphysicaldiseaseormentalsuffering.Whilenotallmentaldisordersaredemonicinorigin,
someapparentlyare.Demonsarealsocreditedwithtemptingpeopletoengageinimmoralpractices.
Theyaretheoriginatorsandpropagatorsofthefalsedoctrinestaughtbyhereticalreligiousgroups.The
Biblealsoteachesthatsomepeoplewerepossessedbydemons.Demonsarecommittedtoevil,yet

Godwillusethemtoaccomplishhisplanduringtheendoftheworld.
DemonsUnknowinglyDoTheWillofGod
Itmustbefrustratingtodemonsaftertheyhadaccomplishedsomeevilschemetolaterfindoutthatthey
werecarryingoutthewillofGod.SatandidnotrealizewhatGodwantedtodoinJobslifewhenhe
causedhimphysicalsuffering.Also,GodusedanevilspirittoaccomplishhiswillinthelifeofSaul,
Israelsfirstking(1Sam.16:14).
Onanotheroccasion,Godusedalyingspirittodeceivethefalseprophetsofanevilking(1Kings
22:22,23).AttheendoftheGreatTribulation,demonswillbeusedbyGodtogatherthenationsofthe
worldtobattlefieldsofArmageddon(Rev.9:16).Godisabletouseevendemonstoaccomplishhiswill.
PhysicalDisease
Therearemanyreasonswhyapersonmayexperiencephysicalillness.Sometimesitistheresultof
Godsjudgmentforsin(1Cor.11:30).Onotheroccasionsthesamesicknessmaycomeasaresultof
breakingsomehealthlawandexposingoneselftogermsorviruses.ItmaycomefromGodashis
meansofendingapersonslifeinanaturalway.Onotheroccasions,demonsmaybethereasona
personexperiencesphysicalsuffering.
SeveralspecificphysicalafflictionsareattributedtodemonsintheBible.Jesuscastademonoutofa
dumbmanwhoimmediatelybegantospeak(Matt.9:32,33).Onanotheroccasion,ablindmanbeganto
seewhenthedemonwentoutofhim(Matt.12:22).Jobwasafflictedphysicallywithboilscoveringhis
body,theresultofsatanicactivity(Job2:110).Demonsmayhavebeenthemessengersthatcarriedout
Satanscommandstosmitejob.Ofcourse,afflictionsarenotalwayssymptomsofdemonactivity,but
demonsarecapableofanddooccasionallycausephysicalpainandsuffering.
MentalDisease
Variousformsofmentaldiseasescanalsobeattributedtodemons.Inatleasttwocasesofdemon
possessiontreatedbyJesusduringhisministry,thedemonshadsoaffectedthemindsofthevictimsto
causeabnormalbehavior.Onemanlivedamongtombs,apracticeconsidereduncleanduringthistime,
andcreatedadisturbancedayandnight(Mark5:4,5).
Ayoungboypossessedwithademoninvoluntarilywentintoanapparentconvulsionwhenhe
encounteredthepresenceofJesus(Luke9:3742).Inbothinstances,thevictimsengagedinsomeform
ofselfdestructionandphysicalmutilationofthebody.Afterthedemonwascastoutoftheperson,the
apparentmentalproblemdisappeared.
MoralImpurity

FortheChristian,ourfinalmoralcodeofethicsistheBible.ThosewhoopposeGodwouldalsooppose,
themoralityoftheBible.Demonsareinstrumentalinleadingboththesavedandunsavedintomoral
compromise.OneoftheoftenusednamesfordemonsintheBibleisuncleanspirit,anappropriate
name,astheytarnisheverythingtheyinfluence.WhenIsraelleftEgypt,Godgavethemthelandof
Canaan.OneofthereasonsGodwantedtheminaseparatelandwasthattheheathennationshad
giventhemselvesovertouncleanspiritsandhadbecome:corrupted(Lev.18Deut.18).
FalseDoctrine
PauldiscussedonemainworkofdemonswhenhewarnedyoungTimothyofconditionsinthelatter
times.
NowtheSpiritexpresslysaysthatinlatertimessomewilldepartfromthefaithbydevoting
themselvestodeceitfulspiritsandteachingsofdemons.1Timothy4:1
Demonsarethesourceofmanyorganizeddoctrinesofthefalsecults.Evenintheearlychurch,there
werefalseapostles(Rev.2:2)andfalsedoctrines(Rev.2:14)thathadtobeopposed.
TheBibleteachesthecomingofanantichristduringtheGreatTribulationbut,bytheendofthefirst
century,Johnwrote,Children,itisthelasthour,andasyouhaveheardthatantichristiscoming,so
nowmanyantichristshavecome.Thereforeweknowthatitisthelasthour.(1John2:18).Theword
antihadatwofolddesignationfirstitmeantagainstChrist,butthesecondarymeaningwasthemost
evident,itmeantinsubstitutionfor,orinsteadof,Christ.Theexistenceofantichristleaders
throughoutthechurchageistheresultofdemonactivity.
TheirmainactivityistofosterasubstitutereligioninplaceofChristandhisdoctrine.
SpiritualBattle
OneofthechiefdifficultiesoflivingforGodtodayisnotthesocialpressuresorinconvenienceoflifeitis
thespiritualbattleinwhichweareengaged.Ourenemiesaredemons.Paulobserved,Forwedonot
wrestleagainstfleshandblood,butagainsttherulers,againsttheauthorities,againstthecosmicpowers
overthispresentdarkness,againstthespiritualforcesofevilintheheavenlyplaces.(Eph.6:12).The
phrasetherulers,againsttheauthorities,againstthecosmicpowersoverthispresentdarkness,
againstthespiritualforcesofevilreferstodemonsandtheiractivities.
Partoftheworkofdemons,particularlyasitrelatestotheChristianlife,isdoingbattlewithChristianson
thespirituallevel.Thisconditionisthereasonbehindtheapostolicimperative,Putonthewholearmorof
God,thatyoumaybeabletostandagainsttheschemesofthedevil.(Eph.6:11).Withoutspiritualhelp
fromGod,theChristianisunabletowinthebattleagainstdemons.
DemonPossession

DemonPossession
Demonpossessionisnotabiblicalexpression,yettheideaofdemoncontrolismorethansimplya
carryoverofancientsuperstitions.Demonpossession,asweunderstandit,occurswhenGodpermits
demonstopossessapersonandcontrolhismindorbody.Onmanyoccasionsdemonpossession
resultedinmentalderangement.InmostcasesrecordedinScripture,thepersonpossessedwas
apparentlyresponsibleforbeingpossessed.
UnderstandingDemonPossession
Thereismuchconfusionaboutdemonpossession.Demonpossessionistheculminationofavolitional
rejectionofGodandavolitionalacceptanceofSatanandhisdemons.Apersondoesnotbecome
possessedbydemonsonacasualbasis.
DemonpossessionistheoppositeofthefillingoftheSpiritjustassomeChristiansaremoreeffective
whenfilledwiththeHolySpirit,sosomeunbelievershavegreaterdemonicpowerasaresultoftheir
demonicpossession.ThesamewordisusedoftheHolySpiritcontrollinginEphesians5:18asSatans
controlofAnaniasandSapphirainActs5.
Demonpossessionanddemonactivityismorecommonlyrecognizedinthirdworldcountries.However,
thereisincreasingevidenceofdemonicactivityinourWesternsocietybecauseofitswaningChristian
influence.AsournationturnsfromGodandmorepeopleworshipSatananddemons,therewillbemore
evidenceofdemonactivityinoursociety.
Manyhaveconjecturedaboutwhetherornotdemonscanpossessorinfluencebelievers.Sincethe
BibleissilentconcerningChristiansbeingpossessed,ithasmuchtosayconcerningdemonspossible
influenceonusandofourneedtobeawareoftheirdesiretoadverselyaffectourwallwithGod.
CanChristiansHaveDemons?
Theshortanswerisno.Satanandhisdemonsmaytemptus,buttheycannotdwellwithinus.
Ifyouloveme,youwillkeepmycommandments.AndIwillasktheFather,andhewillgiveyou
anotherHelper,tobewithyouforever,eventheSpiritoftruth,whomtheworldcannotreceive,
becauseitneitherseeshimnorknowshim.Youknowhim,forhedwellswithyouandwillbeinyou.

Thus,yousee,theHolySpiritlivesineverychildofGod.Additionally,Jesussaysinverse23:If
anyonelovesme,hewillkeepmyword,andmyFatherwilllovehim,andwewillcometohimandmake

SonortheHolySpiritaredwellinginthatChristian.Godandthedevilcannotdwellinthesameplaceor
inthesameperson.
GodemphasizesinHisWordtheHolySpiritliveswithinthosewhohaverepentedoftheirsins,have
acceptedJesusastheirSavior,andhavethusbeenbornintothefamilyofGod.
You,however,arenotinthefleshbutintheSpirit,ifinfacttheSpiritofGoddwellsinyou.Anyone
whodoesnothavetheSpiritofChristdoesnotbelongtohim.Romans8:9
TheHolySpiritwholivesinabornagainchildofGodbearswitnesswiththatpersonsspiritthatheisa
childofGod.IfthedevilorademonlivedinthatChristian,andpossessedthatChristian,theHolySpirit
couldneitherdwellinthatpersonorbearwitnessthatsuchapersonwasachildofGod.
WhatWillHappenToDemons?
WhenJesusencounteredademonpossessedmanduringhisearthlyministry,thedemonsasked,
Haveyoucomeheretotormentusbeforethetime?(Matt.8:29).Demonsunderstandsomethingof
theireternaldestiny,Thephrase,beforethetimecouldmeanthattheyfearedprematureexpulsionfrom
theman,butitprobablymeantprematurejudgmenttohell.Thedestinyofdemonscanbesummarizedin
threephasesofconfinement.
PresentConfinement
Somedemonsarecurrentlyconfined.Johndescribedthereleaseofsomeofthesedemonsin
Revelation9duringtheGreatTribulation,whentheywillcomefromthebottomlesspittoafflictthe
people.JudeidentifiedanothergroupofdemonswhomGodhehaskeptineternalchainsundergloomy
darknessuntilthejudgmentofthegreatday(Jude6).Apparentlythecrimeoftheseangelswasso
horrendousthattheywillneveragainexperienceanydegreeofliberty(2Pet.2:4).
MillennialConfinement
DuringtheGreatTribulation,therearedemonicspirits,performingsigns,whogoabroadtothekingsof
thewholeworld,toassemblethemforbattleonthegreatdayofGodtheAlmighty.(Rev.16:14).As
demonsareinpartresponsibleforthebattleofArmageddon,itisreasonabletoexpecttheywouldbe
preventedfrommakingwarduringthemillennialreignofChrist.
WhiletheirmillennialdestinyisnotspecificallyidentifiedintheBible,mostcommentatorswouldagree
thattheywouldbeconfinedwithSatantheirleaderinthebottomlesspit(Rev.20:3).Theycertainlyare
notactiveduringChristsreignontheearth.

thewillofGodthatanyoneshouldgothere(1Pet.3:9).Whenconfrontedwiththattruth,theobvious
questionis,WhydidGodcreatehellinthefirstplace?TheanswertothatquestionisfoundinMatthew
25:41.Hellwaspreparedforthedevilandhisangels.
Amanwillonlygotohellbychoice,hischoiceasexpressedbyhisrejectionofChrist.Demonsare
apparentlyawarethatsomedaytheywillbeeternallyconfinedtothelakeoffire(Matt.8:29).
ChristiansBecomeJudges
TheBiblealsoteachesthatangelsarenotexemptfromjudgment.PaulaskedtheCorinthians,Doyou
notknowthatwearetojudgeangels?(1Cor.6:3).Towardtheendoftheage,itwillbeour
responsibilityasChristianstorepresentGodintheroleofjudge.
ItmaybethatduringtheTribulation,themillennialkingdom,oreternitytofollow,wewillserveasjudges
similartothejudgeswhoruledbeforeIsraelsfirstking.Asjudges,wewillbegivenapositionofauthority
overangels.
