Hello everyone.
23rd April
The weather is warming up a treat and I
love the sun, even though Im wearing a
big fur coat. Ive been basking in it as often
as I can, but have a lovely shady area
deep in the bushes that I call my retreat.
Foster mummy and daddy have taken one
of their comfy cushions they use for their
own sun lounger and put it in my retreat
and covered it with towels and blankets so
its very cosy and when Im not mooching
round the garden smelling all the plants
thats normally where I can be found.
16
1st May
Its Happy Mothers Day to all those in
Spain. Foster daddy bought foster mummy
some presents from me, Bubble and
Squeak today so shes been praising me
all day.
I wasnt happy on Friday as they both went
out in the evening and left me all alone
for over 6 hours, which theyve never done
in the month Ive been here so I spent
most of that evening and all of yesterday
sulking. They did explain it was a Charity
Event for Noahs ARC, but I couldnt help
being sad I wasnt invited.
Im being a really good boy at night now
and getting lots of sleep and only have a
couple of whinges between 5am and 6am
when the birds tweeting wakes me up. I
make a few low growls to let them know
www.costacalidachronicle.com
3rd May
I have a new place to sleep as the crate
is going as I wont sleep in it anyway and
hopefully I wont need to go back to the
vet anytime soon, so foster daddy has
made me a nice shelter in the little corner
of the garden which I love so much.

Animals in Vehicles
Animals are permitted in private vehicles,
but must be properly restrained using
appropriate harnesses or equipment. Not
abiding with the law can result in an 80
fine, so a dog loose on the front seat is not
allowed. There is a wide range of security
devices available for animals, from boxes
and cages, (which must also be secured),
to harnesses which link to the security
elements of the vehicle; some adapting the
existing seatbelts, others using security
points designed for child seats for example.
New App Can Report if Mobile used by
Drivers
Israeli technologists have devised an
application which will allow the authorities
access to the mobile phones history to
show if the phone was being used at the
time or just before an incident took place.
Limiting Overtaking
As overtaking is one of the most dangerous
manoeuvres on the open road, this will be
restricted in more areas. The solid double
white lines will be reinforced with wider and
marked lines whenever possible and this will
take around 5 months to complete. The 1
million euro budget will reinforce 1,000kms
of road, with an estimated reduction of 20
deaths per year. In 2015, 217 people died in
head-on collisions.
Red-Light Cameras
This type of equipment does not measure the
speed of a vehicle but takes a photograph if
the vehicle has failed to stop at a red light.
Dangerous Intersections
Junctions can be some of the most
dangerous areas on the road. Vehicles cross
and interact with those already moving,
which can be a significant risk to all. Last
year, 20% of injury incidents occurred at
intersections on conventional roads and 134
people died in side-impact collisions. Part of
the plan to improve these intersections will
involve the installation of warning signs on
the approach to key junctions, specifically
those where visibility might be impaired. It
is expected to save 20 lives each year.
18
www.costacalidachronicle.com
Pedestrian Crossings
A number of illuminated warning signs will
be installed on pedestrian crossings. These
signs will be the standard triangular (P-20)
warning signs with orange lights at each
point. 100 signs in 50 areas will be installed
over the next 7 months. It is hoped that this
measure will save 10 lives per year, down
from the 113 people killed in 2015.
Monitoring and Controling Excess
Speed of Night, Border Traffic and
Delivery Vans
These controls will see vehicles stopped
and their occupants identified whilst also
testing for alcohol and drug use and the
correct documentation, including ITV and
insurance. This should reduce the number
of deaths each year in vans by 10. In 2015,
68 deaths were reported in vans.
Monitoring Speed and Safe Distances
Between Vehicles on Motorways
This campaign, together with roadside
patrols, helicopters and information panels
will warn of the importance of maintaining
a safe distance. 54 people were killed
last year where driving too close was an
attributing factor. This was an increase of
10 from 2014.
Motorcycles
Motorcycles will be given considerably more
attention, with extra monitoring points on
the roads and checks on ITV, insurance and
other documentation, as well as speed and
dangerous manoeuvres.
In recent months, 9% of motorcycles
involved in injury incidents did not have an
ITV. 15% of motorbikes were over 20 years
old.

Beetroot
Beetroot is another versatile vegetable
which not only brings colour to your plate,
but also goes with just about anything. You
can make it into a soup, add it to any fish
dish or salad, roast it or eat it cold. There
are lots of recipes for Beetroot salads, but
I didnt add any to my list as I am sure
everyone uses Beetroot in their salads
already. Instead I wanted to show how you
can use it in different ways like roasting it
in the oven with other vegetables like my
chicken recipe below. Beetroot even goes
well on a pizza and below you will find my
easy recipe using Naan bread instead of
pizza base. Try the lamb burgers; they are
delicious and great for something different
at a BBQ. You can use chicken or beef
mince if youre not a lamb fan.

Dear Editor
Come On Los Alcazares!
Yet another bar told to stop Live Music!
This is a holiday town and part of its appeal
is the variety of bars and restaurants,
excellent beaches etc.
But - the odd
person is not happy about live music and a
complaint is made and in go the Police to
turn the music off and spoil the fun for so
many, even if it is a party being celebrated.
Surely, if people dont like the sound of
music, or people having fun, why do these
complainers choose to live in a holiday
town or near a bar?
Why not a compromise - say live music
(subject of course to having the appropriate
license) be allowed between the hours of
say 8pm to 11.30pm, 3 nights a week.
42
www.costacalidachronicle.com
Not unreasonable!
Bars are having to close and entertainers
etc are finding it hard to make a living, all
because a complaint is made.
Live near an airport, you get planes.
Live near a bar you get noise, so may I
suggest that the killjoys go to live in the
campo, or in quieter areas. Why should a
few be allowed to spoil things for so many?
Live and let liveonly saying!!!

also said that,
to construct
the house, it

which came

hills
around
Cehegn!
The
main
room is now
the Salon de
Plenos (main
meeting room) of the Town Hall with plaster
decorations and decorated wood panels. In
a second room, the Salon Capitular, the floor
apparently contains a mosaic consisting of
24,000 pieces of marble reproducing the
head of a pagan priestess. It should be worth
seeing!
A little further along at the end of this road
and by the Plaza Mesoncico is the Hospital
de la Real Piedad. This is an iconic building
in Cehegn. It is built over three floors
with large reja-covered windows at ground
floor level and large double entrance doors
also reja-covered, while the next floor has
small balconies outside four shuttered door/
windows. The top floor is similar in style.
As the external sign tells you, the hospital
was founded in 1891. The two upper floors
have an interesting colour scheme of cream,
terracotta and green outlines! The corner coat
of arms is of the Chico de Guzman family, one
of whom, Don Pedro Maria, the third Count
of the Real Piedad donated the money which
allowed the creation of the hospital named
after him.

Centuries.
The
bottom

again
has
large
reja-covered
windows and
above, balconied opening door/windows. The
top floor has smallish windows under the
terracotta outlined roof overhang. The main
entrance is of red jasper with the shield of the
Ruiz de Assn y Zimnez family to be seen
well above it.
To us, however, the next building is one of
the most fascinating in Cehegn the Casa
de las Boticarias. This can be seen directly
opposite the Casino de Cehegn on Calle
Mayor. The house dates to the 17th and 18th
Centuries. It is said to have two parts, one
of which is baroque with the house entrance
framed by two stone pillars (look down the
road immediately opposite the Casino) and
the other neo-classical with a shield relating
to the Alvarez family on its faade. Inside,
the building has a cloistered corridor-style
patio made of wood and with a central well.
We were able
to look inside
the entrance
in early 2015
and it was
then
in
a
very
badly
run
down
state, though
hopefully
it
may benefit
from
future
renovation.
The
house
was originally
built
for
the
closed
order of the
Nuns of the
Conception.
Its present name, however,
comes from two local chemists the Ortega
Lorencio sisters. Perhaps the most remarkable
features of the building, however, are the
Ionic columns framing the entrance. Believe
it or not, these came from the Roman Temple
of Jupiter in Begastri showing how Roman
architectural features were subsequently
plundered and used for later construction.
The Casa de las Boticarias was acquired by
the Town Hall several years ago and perhaps
the future will see its restoration.
Next, there is the Casino itself. This is a 17th
Century building, although its name refers
to the period from the middle of the 19th

Then move on to La Constitucin Park, a small

About Us
Los Infiernos Perrera Supporters
are a group of volunteers, of varying
nationalities, who help out at the dog

anything from playing with abandoned

unfortunately

though
she is in one
of the first

enter!! Hiena
came to us
with another,
much
older
dog
called
Athor.
Both
were in a terrible state and were petrified
of everything. Luckily for Athor, he has
already found his forever home, but Hiena
is still with us. We are not sure what had
happened in her past, but it took quite a
long time for her to trust humans again
and now she cant get enough attention!
She loves going for walks and loves people
spending time with her. She has been in
a kennel on her own since Athor left so
we think she is very, very lonely. We feel
because of her past she would be best
suited to a forever home where she is
the only doggy inhabitant. If you can give
the lovely Hiena a forever home, please
get in touch. All adoptions are subject to
homechecks.

From

playing was outstanding. All we could hear

Our
annual
Grape-stomping
extravaganza, with a tour of a winery and
ecological olive farm, is on the programme
for September 20th. Just 29 including
tasting.
The Roman and Carthaginian Festival
in Cartagena is an amazing show, including
the battle between the armies with a
reserved seat and free time to enjoy the
fiestas. This will be on September 23rd.
We have recently received an amazing
offer for a Pullmantur Transatlantic
Cruise, leaving Bilbao on September 17th,
with stops in Lisbon, St Martens, Aruba
and finishing in the Panamanian city of
Colon, with return flights to Madrid, for
as little as 750 plus taxes (190) per
person for interior and 825 per person
for exterior + taxes. From Alicante you
can take a direct flight to Bilbao. This is
an all-inclusive cruise, 15 nights, at an
unbeatable price.
Other suggestions for Cruises might
be to the Fiords this summer to escape
the inevitable heat, or to visit the Baltic
Capitals including an overnight in Saint
Petersburg.
Take your time planning that perfect
summer outing with the family and dont
forget after the summer comes time for
yourselves and of course Christmas is not
that far away! We have the brochures in

Ladies Lunch
The CGAs Ladies Section had a luncheon
at the Golf Club on 22nd March. We usually
have a get together just before Christmas,
but as the ladies had various other functions
to go to, they could not fit it in. There was
going to be a Golf Competition before the
lunch, but unfortunately it rained and was
cancelled.
After lunch the prizes which
had been running over the past six months
were presented to the winner Julie White
and Vron Porter who came second. The
Golf Club did us proud with sandwiches,
cakes and cream teas. Julie also brought in
some homemade sweets which went down
really well with the ladies.
