Physics Lab Observation – COHERENT PROPERTIES OF LASER

Exp. No. 6 COHERENT PROPERTIES OF LASER

Date:

Aim: To determine the coherent length and coherent time of laser using He-Ne Laser.

Apparatus: He-Ne Laser, Spectrometer with collimator replaced with He-Ne Laser and telescope
replaced with a screen, Grating (15000 lines/inch).

Formulae:

1) Coherence Length ∆l = A.
∆λ
where ∆λ is the variance observed in the wave length λ .
∆l
2) Coherence time τ coherence = .
c
where ‘c’ is the velocity of light.

Observations:

Determination of Grating element:

No. of lines on the grating, N = ____________ lines/inch.

N = ____________ lines/cm.

Grating element (e + d) = 1/N = __________ cm/line.

Least count of the Spectrometer:

Value of one main scale division, x = __________ degree = __________ min.

Total no. of divisions on the vernier scale, n = ___________.

Least Count L.C. = x/n = __________ min.

Calculation of the Coherent Length ' ∆l ' :

λ12 λ12
∆l1 = = = ____________ Ao .
∆λ λ1 − λ2
λ22 λ22
∆ l2 = = = ____________ Ao .
∆λ λ2 − λ3
λ32 λ32
∆l3 = = = ____________ Ao .
∆λ λ1 − λ3
∆l1 + ∆l2 + ∆l2
∆l = = ____________ Ao .

Calculation of the Coherent Time 'τ coherence ' :

∆l
τ coherence = = __________ sec.
c
Precautions:

1) Do not touch the grating surface, but hold it from its edges.
2) The adjustment of grating for Normal Incidence Position is made accurately.
3) Do not see LASER beam directly.
4) Readings from both the verniers is essential.

Result:

1) The wavelength of the LASER, λ = __________ Ao .

2) The Coherent length of LASER ∆l = __________ Ao .

3) Coherent time of LASER, τ coherence = __________ sec.
