Christianity is not an outside religion of external behaviors. Surely we are called to strive, to do, to act, to speak,
to behave in certain ways. And yet, it is not primarily
about these externals at all. The creed of Christ and his
disciples is a creed of the heart, a devotion of internal
transformation. This is why Paul prays that the eyes of
our heart would be enlightened and commands that we
be transformed by the renewing of our minds. This is
why Jesus warned the Pharisees, Hypocrites! You honor
me with your lips, but your hearts are far from me. This
is why God told Samuel, God sees not as man sees,
for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord
looks at the heart. In all of our striving, acting, speaking
and behaving, let us be sure that these externals are
flowing from the internals which catch Gods eye. Let us
be sure our lips are speaking from our heart, and let us
be sure that our transformation is an internal one.
1. What is the text asking me to believe about God and myself, sin and salvation, the world and the world to come?
2. What sin is this verse forbidding? What duty is this verse
commanding?
3. What grace, fruit, or gift of the is this passage calling
for?
