LADISH SPLlT TEES

This Ladish development meets a long standing demand
for a practicable means to make a safe hot tap branch
and to reinforce the entire area of the branch
connection
with greater strength than has previouslY been possible.

...

Past experience with saddles indicates that while they

reinforced the area immediately adjacent to the outlet
undesirable rigidity developed in the crotch and side wall
portions of the Iine. Further, the restriction of geometric
adjustment of the line caused stress eaks which have undoubtedly contributed to many of t e past failuro which
have been associated with saddles.

The unique design of the Ladish Split Tee eliminates

such faults. Consisting of two half tee sedions, ib area of
reinforcement extends completely around both line and
branch pipes and for a generous distance along the line
pipe on each side of the branch connection. The two halves
are welded together along the line of bisection with heat
kept safely away from direct contact with the main line.

Additional sup ort S gained b welding the branch

outlet of the Split ee to the branch hne. The joint opposite
the branch i s made with an exterior overlapping reinforcement strip which provides ample adjustment within the permisible ran e of dimensional tolerances to fit around the
main line. Futting and fitting on the job site are eliminated. The connection is completed by welding the overlapping strip to the mating half of the Split Tee. Welding
to the line pipe as well as total weld deposition for the
entira connection is held to a minimum.

With no restraining welds between the main line pipe

and the Ladish Split Tee, &trenes imposed by expansion
of the pipe under pressure are distributed with greater
uniformity over the entire reinforced area thus assuring
greater usable strength and more dependable operation.
Prices and dimensional data on application.

Data on Pipe Line Flanges has been developed and published. b y the Manufacturen Standardization Society to
meet the need for steel pipe flanges for pipe line use in
sizes larger than those covered b y American Standard 816.5.
The infOrmatiOn that appears On pages 154 and 155 has
been abstracted from MSS Standard Pradice SP-44 which
covers steel Pipe Line Flanges.

While these Pipe Line Flanges, which range in size from

96 through 36 inches in increments of 9 inches, are designated
b y customary American Standard classes of 300, 400 and
600 pound primary rating, their use is almost entirely con-

Fined to cross county bansmission pipe lines at atmos~ h e r i ctemperatures.

They are intended primarily for attachment to thin wall,

high *ength cold worked pipe, but are equally

adaptable
for other uses. Bolt circles, etc., have been selected to
accommodate integral construction on valve
bodies and
pipe line apparatus.
Small ends of Welding Neck Flange Hubs are thicker than
pipe. Additional thickness has been added
to the hub O.D. to insure that the stresses at the small end -.
of the hub will not be excessive.

A s a guide to the designer, maximum values or the h

diameter at base and at welding end have been establish
in the tables that follow. The hub diameter a t base of t
Channel End Shell Flange i s based on maintaining minimum required wrench clearance. This maximum diameter
in combination with the hub slope, that has been set in thc
design of each flange, establishes the maximum hub diameter a t the welding end. Although wrench clearance
does not limit the hub diameter a t base of the Cover End
Shell Flange, the maximum diameter i s set by maintaininj
the established hub slope.

the desired hub thickness.

Corrosion allowances listed below are equal to the difference

between the minimum hub thicknesses, as established in the
T.E.M.A. Standard, and the hub thicknesses which have been
determined from the diameten at the welding end in the flange
tables that follow.

It should be noted that lesser hub thickness (or lesser corrosion allowance) can be achieved b y increasing the I.D. for
use with either pipe or plate shells, or b y decreasing the hub
O.D. for use with plate shells only. If the hub O.D. i s decreased, the hub diameter a t the base should be equally
decreased, maintaining the original hub slope. Greater hub
thickness (or greater corrosion allowance) can be achieved
only b y decreasing the tabulated inside diameter, except
on 150 lb., 300 lb. and 450 lb. Class R and 450 lb. Class C
and A hub flanges of 19", 91" and 93'' nominal size plate
shells, where the outside diameters of the hub can be increased

Since these corrosion allowances are applicable only to

the flanges as tabulated, the following table has been prepared to enable the designer to readily determine the allowance when either the I.D. or O.D. of the hub of a flange i s
varied from the tabulated values. The actual corrosion allowances for any flange of lesser or greater hub thickness can be
letermined b y adjusting the tabulated corrosion allowance
by the difference between the tabulated hub thickness and

In addition t o those ever-present factors of pressure and temperature, today's

piping engineer is frequently involved in design problems which are further complicated b y such considerations as corrosion, contamination and catalytic action
between the piping material and fluids or gases being conveyed through the lines.

Recent advances in both metallurgy and forging techniques have made available
for these problems a wide range o f ferrous and non-ferrous piping metals together
with many special-duty alloys of each. N o w b y careful seledion of the proper
material for pipe and fittings i t is possible to meet more effectively than ever
before the requirements of practically any service condition.

NICKEL-COPPER ALLOYS

Enumerated here are the broad classifications o f materials and allovs most
.frequently used, and i n which many individual items of the complete Ladish
lines are being produced. O n following pages of this sedion i s a more complete
breakdown of these classifications showing the applicable code and standards
designations. Working with both the prime material manufacturers and important
users of special piping i n al1 fields, the Ladish Co. constantly carries on research
and metallurgical studies to produce fittings i n an ever wider range of materials.

MANUFACTURING STANDARDS AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATEPNS

for Forged Flanges and Screwed and Socket Welding Fittings
Ladish Forged Steel American Standard Flan es are
manufactured t o the dimensional standards oY ASA
BI6.5-1953. This standard covers the range of sizes listed
below and the dimensional tolerances shown on page 240.
It establishes pressure-tem erature ratings which are constant throughout al1 sizes o any one material, one pressure,
a n d one gasket-facing class. A s can be seen i n the tabulation on pages 263-268, this results in a considerable
condensation of ratings, as compared t o the ratings for
pipe and Seamless Welding Fittings, where ratings vary
with size of fitting and the type of service as covered by
the various sections of the Code for Pressure Piping.

Ladish Forged Steel Socket Welding Fittings comply

with the dimensional requirements of American Standard
BI6.11-1946. This standard covers the range of sizes and
the dimensional tolerances shown on page 241. It permits
pressure ratings equal t o those of pipe of the same schedule
number and strength of material. However, this basis of
rating has not been commonly used because of the magnitude of such a listing and because of the establishment
lprior to the adoption of the standard) of a nominal set of

ratings representing an average value of the manufacturer's recommended working pressure for the etitire range
of sizes. These ratings for Carbon Steel and 1% Chromium%% Molybdenum Steel are tabulated on page 269.
There is not as yet an American Standard for For ed
Steel Screwed Fittings lor high pressure applications. The
true, clean threads of Ladish fittings compl with the
American Standard B2.1-1945 for Taper Pipe fhreads, as
summarized on page 246.
Ladish Forged Steel Flanges and Fittin S are manufactured from material inclvded in the
and ASME
ecifications and to the special requirements of the purc aser. Some of the material specifications are tabulated
below, and an abbreviated but more comprehensive listing
of piping material specifications is given on pages 229
through 236.

ASQM

For welding bevel standards, see p a e 239. The standard

recommends the straight 371/n0 beve for 3/4" and lesser
wall thicknesses and the combination 371/g0-10"
bevel
for wall thicknesses greater than 3/4".
