OZONE AND INTENSE ELECTRIC FIELD, IN THIN PELLICULAR LAYER

Several experiments carried upon channel waste water treatment with ozone and intense
electric field, in thin pellicular layer, were conducted on samples taken at the entrance to the
WWTP (Waste Waters Treatment Plant) of Cluj-Napoca. Polluted water, with a pH = 6.5,
settling out of primary and secondary settling into the water treatment station Gilau (Fig.1).

Wastewater samples from SC Somes SA Cluj - Napoca have undergone surgery for treatment
by exposure in the corona field declined plane. Some of the treated samples were previously
filtered through a sand barrier. Some sets of samples were then filtered extra drips through
sand barrier too.
The unfiltered and filtered samples were subjected to the further operation of ozone feeding,
on the experimental laboratory device depicteg in figure. 2.

Figure 2. Experimental direct treatment device with variable plane angle; (a) scheme of the device: 1
- power adjustable flow tank, 2 - fluid flow trough, 3 - parallel active electrode wire mesh, 4 passive earthed electrode, 5 - rack, 6 - wheel rack, 7 - basic support, 8 hinges; (b) - the active
electrode treatment, type of discharge network of parallel wires.
Direct treatment equipment using intense electric fields, the slope and controlled generation of
ozone (fig. 1) [1,3,4], allows the use of different configurations of corona electric fields
(generate on needle type electrodes which provides punctual discharges, or in the narrow of
filiform wires and stocky adjustable discharging corona elements).
The experimental kit also provides variable intensity of the intense electric field, different
voltages (reversible DC or AC) and adjustable exposure times. In addition to these, the cell
provides a uniform and continuous exposure of the treatead water (also other fluids, as oil,
grease, detergents, surfactants present in the waste waters can be reduced) in a thin layer.
Samples of untreated and treated water were collected in sterile plastic containers of 0.5 liters
and analyzed at the chemical and biological laboratories of Water Society Gilau Someeni (Cluj
- Napoca) in order to perform specialized tests.
Experimental conditions and results of treatment of waste water channel in the corona field of
ozone generation, on angular inclined plane in thin pellicular layer ( = 30 o, p = 10 mm, s = 25
mm, L = 500 mm, wire = 150 mm, U = 20 kV, f = 50 Hz) are presented in table 1.

Results of tests on the samples (P) of wastewater channel, carried on treatment water stand in
pellicular layer ( fig. 1) are presented in table 1.
Tab.1. Pollutants present in the chanell waste water and results obtained by exposure in high
intense electric field and ozone.

Note: withness sample M1 and P1.1, P1.2 samples comes from the entrance of the primarily
settling; withness sample M2 and P2.1, P2.2 samples were collected at the output of the
primarily settling; F filtered in sand bed before ozone treatment; NF unfiltered; Sin.
sinus. A.C voltage, 4 or 10 passes; I clear water; OS ozonized, pleasant smell; P
pestilential smell; Det. detergents and surfactants.

In both experimental compounds were either totally annihilated the microbiological pathogens
(streptococcus) or drastically reduced the coliforms and Esterichia-Coli pollutants. Water
odour and color were significantly improved, olfactory and visual effects are determined. The
water is clear, and the smell is of pleasant ozonized air.
The author analyzed the experimental results and their synthesis is presented in table 2 and
figure 3. Streptococcus were totally annihilated, resulting in a microbiologically pure water in a
percentage of 100%.

All other compound pollutants experienced significant decreases. The largest amount was
achieved at the total pathogens category, where them amount fell down from 4.76 times (P 2.1)
up to 11.33 times (P 1.1) compared to their baseline (tab 4.5, fig. 3).

Figure 3. The results of municipal wastewater treatment field with corona discharge ozone
generation, in thin pelicullar layer on the inclined angular plane (additional filtered samples in sand
bed).
Detergents presents significant reductions (47 85.70%), cyanides (20%), azotites (89
97.62%). These values are lower by approx. 10% of the samples were filtered through sand
barrier before treatment (P1.1F, P1.2 F), except for the total germs, whose decreases are still 10
times higher than in unfiltered samples. Pathogen reduction is up to 11.33 times ( samples M1,
M2) and the significant reductions in detergents and nitrites are (percentage) around values of
85 96% from baseline [4,5].
The obtained experimental results recommend this method for wastewater treatment at
industrial level.
As a result of these research, the long term improvement plan of waste waters depollution at
WWTP Gilau and Someseni, also includes an ozonization station placed at the output of plant
(fig.1) , before the evacuation of purified water in the natural environment.
