STUDY PLAN

Master of Not-for-Profit and Social Enterprise Management

University of Technology, Sydney
Nowadays, social enterprise (SE) is becoming an interesting topic because it has basic
differentiation that is extremely contrast with conventional business which just focus for income.
Gregory Dees, one of Professors in Stanford University, explains that there are three main
forms of SE, (1) not for profit, (2) doing business with social mission as the main goal or (3)
combination between (1) and (2), company profit for social mission.
In several countries, SE has shown a good contribution to the country itself. In United
Kingdom, in 2009, there were 650,000 people who worked in this sector and it added 8.4
Billion in the economic sector of this country. In South Korea, there are 1,165 certified SE since
the amendment of Social Enterprise policy was agreed in 2010. One of Aseans country,
Thailand, shows big progress where there are 116,000 of SEs, both in early stage or developing
stage and in 2015 The National Reformation Council of Thailand had approved the constitution
which managed SE.
In Indonesia, the development of SE has attracted many people. Several organizations,
which concern in this topic, like Asoka Indonesia or Unltd Indonesia, are the evidence of it.
Some research are also choosing SE as main variable, for example Muliadi Palesangi (2011)
who concluded that several SEs had proven their contribution on unemployment, poverty, and
environmental problem or international journal that was written by Aida Idris and Rahayu Hijrah
Hati (2013) Social Entrepreneurship in Indonesia: Lessons from the past which explained the
contribution of several organizations to solve social problem and also involved to attempt getting
Indonesias independence.
The argument above influences me to continue my study and choose Master of Not-forProfit and Social Enterprise Management in University of Technology Sydney (UTS) because
Australia already has ecosystem that supports Social Enterprise. Based on research and
previous findings of Department of Families and Community Services in Australia found that
there are up to 20,000 social enterprises in Australia and 73% of them had been operational for
at least five years. Surrounding by numerous social enterprises, which operated in many kinds
of industry such as agriculture, food and beverage services, or art and recreation services,
makes Australia becoming a suitable place to learn more about Social Enterprise.

Generally, this course focuses on how management can contribute to society and the

The wider development of SE in several countries than Indonesia attract me to research

how big enterprise ecosystem in Indonesia supporting SE. This research will use 6 aspects that
explained by Daniel Isenberg in Domains of the Entrepreneurship Ecosystem, such as
government policy, finance facility, cultural condition, supporting facility, Human capitals quality,
market condition, and adding geographical aspect with assumption that SEs progress will be
affected by location, particularly because Indonesia is a country which has numerous potentials
in each area.
Moreover, the one of advantages from study abroad is networking. Therefore, I will take a
part in The Indonesian Students Association of Australia. It is intended to share an
understanding that our major duty after completing study is returning and participating to
develop Indonesia by connecting each other. In addition, to make me understand about social
enterprise more, I will join also in workshop and study tour which provided by Social Traders,
the organization which concern in social enterprise in Australia.
