Etymology
ThetermBrolloriginatesfromthemethodof16mmfilmproductionfromanoriginalcameranegative.Framesof
workprintandoforiginalnegativearematchedexactlythroughtheuseofedgenumbersthatappearedoneach
frameoforiginalandworkprint.Buttheoriginalwasnotstrungtogetherinasimplelinearfashionaswasthework
print.Instead,theoriginalwaseditedina"checkerboard"pattern,witheachshotsynchronizedtoanequallengthof
opaqueleaderonasecondor"B"roll.
Use
Historic
"AandB"rollsfunctionedequallytomakeblindsplices,fades,anddissolvespossible.Eachrollwasprinted
separatelyontoasinglerollofrawstocktoproduceprojectionprints.[1]Theprocessisdescribedinthe1982
editionofthe"RecommendedProcedures"oftheAssociationofCinemaandVideoLaboratories,andinthe1962
textFilmandItsTechniques.[2]
Lineareditingera
ThenthetermBrollwasadoptedfortheolderformoflinearbasededitingandthecommonnamingconventions
usedbymosttelevisionproductionfacilities.Traditionally,thetapedecksinaneditsuitewerelabelledbyletter,
withthe'A'deckbeingtheonecontainingthemaintapeuponwhichthemainactionmaterialwasshot.The'B'

deckwasusedtoruntapesthatheldadditional,typicallysoundless,footagesuchasestablishingshots,cutaway
shots,andanyothersupportingfootage.[3]Aslineareditingsystemswereunabletodissolvebetweenclipsonthe
sametape,aneditdecisionlist(EDL)wasusedtomarkclipsas"aroll"and"broll"toindicatesourcemachines.
Contemporary
Theterm"Broll"hasseveralcontemporarymeanings:
Ininterviewsanddocumentaryfilmsitmaydescribesecondaryfootagethataddsmeaningtoasequenceor
disguisestheeliminationofunwantedcontent.Thistechniqueofusingthecutawayiscommontohidezooms,
wherethevisualsmaycutawaytoBrollfootageofwhatthepersonistalkingaboutwhiletheAcamera
zoomsin,thencutbackafterthezoomiscomplete.
ThecutawaytoBrollfootagecanalsobeusedtohideverbalorphysicalticsthattheeditorand/ordirector
findsdistracting:Becausetheaudioisseparatefromthevideo,thespeaker'svoiceisheardasavoiceover
whileBrollfootageisshown.Thefilmmakersarethusfreetoexcise"uh"s,sniffs,coughs,andsoforth
withoutthevideoshowingthesmallskipsassociatedwiththeseminorexcisions.Similarly,acontextually
irrelevantpartofasentenceoranecdotecanberemovedtoconstructamoreeffective,succinctdelivery.
