1. Use the language around you. If you are in an English speaking country then this is easy. If not then use
the internet.
2. I you have the chance, join an English speaking club where you can practise your speaking regularly (this
could be a book club, cultural exchange or a hobby club) or start one yourself with other IELTS friends
and have one rule English only! See if you can invite native speakers to give short talks at your
meetings. The value is in the speaking and trying to improve fluency.
3. Do one English activity every day listen to the radio, watch a film, read a magazine or newspaper article,
have a conversation in English. Make it something that you are interested in and then ENJOY it!
4. Volunteer to do something where you have to speak English read to the children at your local primary
school, help some high school students with their English etc (if you live in an English-speaking country
there are many opportunities go to your local library to find out.)
5. Join an online community. There are several to choose from, try out a few and see which you like. My
own is Gapfillers, everybody welcome!!
6. Practise little and often. Choose one activity at a time for example reading, and really concentrate on
that during your daily practice.
7. Make sure you understand why things are wrong, go over any mistakes and learn from them. If you have
a lot of mistakes then do the exercise again.

Hi,
great pleasure to see such a nice collection of tips, my ielts target is 7.0 band in each module and i am
going to appear second time.
Reply
Dear Shahid,
thank you for your comment. I hope that the ideas will help you. 7 in each part is no easy task!
Keep practising and more importantly try to get as much exposure to English as you can
(especially speaking and listening). I wish you the best in your exam and let me know if I can help
you at all.
Reply
Hi,
thanks for your reply, in fact i have appeared in both Modules General & Academic and scored in both
6.o Band. However, it is not an easy task to get 7.0 in each module, specially for me ,when it comes
towards reading
Sincerely,
Shahid

I think the main things about the reading is to spend more time on analysing the questions and
propose some answers (you wont really have time to read the passages) and then skim over the
reading passages to confirm your responses see my post on how to do this.

Dear sir i worked hard for reading i got 3-5Band and Listening 5 and Writing 4-5 speaking 6 over all 5
Band agen i am writing my IELTS please give me tips in 20 Days can i improve and get a band at list 6-5
i require plz reply to pedprasad@gmail.com

Dear Prasad, dont give up you have to keep trying. Have you done any of these things (in the 10tips?) You need now to look at your scores and see where you have to improve reading is a
priority and writing too. Are you just doing the tests? If so you need to get online and find things
outside the tests to listen to and read.

ny name is neelam .idid ielts in academic module with5.5 band.my aim is 6.5 in how many months it
possible
Reply
Hi Neelam it is difficult to predict this without knowing more about your performance in the
individual sections and your English level generally. A lot also depends on how much time you
have to study and improve your English and which methods you are using to do this. Certainly the
more you practise the better but the practice needs to be efficient and smart (not just going over
tests) If you want to email me with more details maybe I can advise you further. You can find my
email details under the About section of this blog.
Reply
I think it depends on a person, in my case, I took 7 months from 5.5-6.5 I practice everyday even
studying with a private teacher and self- studying. In some case, my friend took about 2 months
without any teacher and then he passed both IELTS and TOEFL in 7.0and 88. In my opinion, you
dont need to be intelligent but just study habit 3-4 hours a day and everytime you think about
somethings, you should thing in ENGLISH.

Hi Mohamed it is a good idea to keep an eye on the latest news for IELTS but as far as I know there
havent been any recent changes. The most important aspect of IELTS is your English language
level. If you have done the exam you know the format but you can always improve your English
and the better this is the more you should be able to bring to the exam. Watch TV, listen to the
radio, read the newspaper keep up with the news and latest current affairs and keep improving
your English skills then spend a little time on the exam format. Also, you do need people to help
you especially with writing ( and speaking) without anybody to mark this and give you advice every
essay will remain the about the same level. I hope this helps its difficult to give specific advice
without knowing your experience of the exam and your current level of English.

Reply
Hi John thank you for your message. This is a high score and not easy to do. However, with
focused practice in both IELTS techniques and English language generally it is achievable. It is
important not to neglect your exposure to English every day because if your general language
ability is strong your performance in the test is more assured. It will be easier for me to give you
better advice via email as a lot depends on where you are now and what your deadlines are.

Dear tehmina thank you for your coment. You do not say what band you need in each module. I
think it is probably best for you to find an IELTS course to follow with a teacher (not just a course
book or test book).

Hi Berni. I have written ielts twice and have achieved scores for listening 6, reading- 5.5 and 4.5 and
writng 6.5 both times. My speaking I achieved 8.5 and 8. How can I achieve scores of 7 and above in the
reading, listening and writing?
Reply
Hello Vedhna,
Without speaking to you and finding out what the problems are it is difficult to advise. Your
speaking is obviously way ahead of your other skills which suggests that you are not preparing
well for the other parts of the test. Again just going through the test again and again is not the best
way to prepare. You need to get your listening, reading and writing up to a good level before you
start to do test practice.

to get good bands from you and request you to kindly help me.Looking forward for your +ve response in
this limited time..Have a good day

In comparison to the first time and last time, every part is better, excepts reading. sometime, I felt give
up to my reading because this part drags overall down. I have recorded my scores and how long it
takes, For example, my listening from 5.0-6.5 it took about 7 months as has my writing from 5.5-7.0 and
speaking from 5.0-6.5 but reading didt improve . I think I probably go back my country to take the test,
maybe it is easier. Sorry, I dont mean to say negatively but I hope you understand my situation.
Reply
Dear Thammawitz,
I can understand your frustration especially as you are in the US. Let me ask you a question
how much English do you actually use every day? YOu say that you are studying hard and I
dont doubt that but how much are you getting out into the street and actually using English
because believe me this is the best way to improve your English skills. The more you use
them in the real world the better they will become. I think you are seeing the IELTS right
now as a big burden. I suggest you put away all your IELTS books and just concentrate on
using your English to speak, listen, read etc.. When you say you dont need to be intelligent I
think you mean you dont need to be clever. I think you dont need to be clever to learn a
language but you DO need intelligence to use it for reading and writing.
If nothing is improving then your preparation is not helping you at all. You need to address
why you are not getting better scores, what is lacking in your English that stops you from
getting the result you want. When you study for 3 or 4 hours per day I wonder what you are
doing exactly. There is a chance that everything has fossilised because you are into the
habit of test practice followed by taking a test followed by more test practice etc.. Can you
see that this is taking you around in circles and you HAVE to break this cycle.
There seems to be a lot of frustration with IELTS here. Two things are often the cause
trying to take the exam and get a score that doesnt tally with your English language level
and not making your preaparation and practice focused enough on the things that you
personally need to address. Just going through tests will not do this there has to be much
more than that!!
If you want to contact me for more information please do at: berni.wall@language-
tuition.co.uk
Hello, first of all thanks a lor for your highly apprecited efforts helping test takers to reach and get the
bands the are looking for;
I need to get 6 in all bands I did the exam twice and got on first time (7 S, L 6.5, R 5, W 5) the second
time I got (5.5 S, 6.5 L, 5.5 W, 5 R)
can you help please.
Reply
I find that there are two things that stop people from getting what they want in IELTS. The first and
most important is that their own English language level is NOT in alignment with the band score
that is desired. This is a test of English you need to have really good English skills. Secondly,
preparation and practice is not focused on the areas that need improvment. Many people just keep
going through test practice after test practice without looking at the specific areas that need
improving. When you want to develop skills its important that you practice the things that are
holding you back and not just keep doing everything every day.

individual 7score.
Reply
The only way to improve writing is to do it and get it checked. Also less is more if you write 3
essays all at once the chances are that they will have the same errors. You need to know what you
have to do to improve and it is very hard to assess your own writing effectively. My advice is to
have an IELTS teacher check it for you and tell you what to do and what not to do to improve.
Reply
Terima kasih atas pertanyaan ini!! There are many differences in the tests themselves but the
similarity is that they are both exams that you can use to study or move overseas. I used to live in
Medan many years ago and unless things have changed, I think there are some opportunities to
practice English and prepare for IELTS. Firstly, I hope you read the Jakarta Post. Try and read it
regularly. Use websites like the BBC to get podcasts for listening practice (dont rely on movies
alone they are too visual though fine also). Get speaking practice if you join my site you can find
study partener to speak on Skype with (http://www.gapfillers.co.uk). That leaves writing practice
try finding a site where you can publish your writing or get people to comment on your blog etc..
As you approach the exam then you will need to have your writing checked to make sure that it is
at the band level you want. The difference between getting a good score and not is your overall
English level which should be in alignment with the score that you want and your abilty to apply
your English well to the tasks.

really I want to thank you a gain
Reply
Dear Mai this is a difficult choice and one you have to make yourself. I wonder why you are not
happy there have you made friends? I know what it is like to be far from home (I lived for a long
tinme in Indonesia going there whe I was 21) but you need to decide what your dream is and
follow it. You will learn much more English in Perth and IELTS is a test of English so from that
point of view it will be easier in Perth do do this as long as you get out and about and use your
English to improve it.
On the other hand if you are very homesick then it will affect your study Im sure. Perhaps you can
speak to someone about this your tutror or a friend maybe.

Hi kris here i want to know how to increase my score because i got 5 band ( L5.5- W4.5-R 4.5 S 5.5)
Reply
Hi kris sorry to be so long in replying. You dont say what band you are looking for but in every
case the key to improving scores is improving your English. Get out and practise. Find friends who
will speak with you or find online speaking partners (you can do this on my site Gapfillers) use the
internet to listen to podcasts, news programmes etc.. get someone to help you with your writing
(on Gapfillers you can write and get others to comment on your work or send us your writing for a
small fee to correct). Once you are confident about your English skills then the IELTS will not be a
big hurdle.

Reply
Hi Suby and thank you for your comment. Writing is the test that most people struggle with so you
are not alone. Basically it takes time to improve and also if you dont get your writing checked you
are in danger of learning and reinforcing mistakes. Your other scores are really good so there is
something going on here which needs diagnosing. Ill email you and then you can tell me more.

Respected sir/madam I need six bands but obtained only five I really work hard please tell. Me tha
technique to obtain my goal
Reply
Dr. Kirpal thank you for your comment. It is very frustrating when you work very hard and dont get
the result that you really want (or indeed deserve from all the hard work). Sometimes its because
your language skills are not aligned with the desired band score and other times its because you
dont have all the techniques you need to really master the parts of the test. I am about to launch a
progra, mme that will address both of these. Ill send you more information via email.
Reply
hello sir..i have joined ielts class but its far away from my home so i am going there 3days in a
week.So will u please suggest me for improving my writting and speaking
Reply
Dear Sanjina the key thing is to keep practising in-between your lessons. I am sure that your
teacher will give you homework so do this and then if you have more free time you can use this to
do more English practice. For writing you need to get your teacher to check it regularly and then
learn from the mistakes you make. Also look at model essays at the band you want and try to pick
out good phrases and words from these to use yourself. Find a Skype speaking buddy (you can do
this in Gapfillers) and speak as often as you can practising the test but also talking about various
topics and the things you are interested in.

Hi All, Please make sure to set a higher score in mind than the actual requirements of yours and strive
for it. Please practice as if this is the last chance for you. I myself scored 7.6 (with 9 in reading and 8.5
in listening) but cant get a good score in writing which ruined my future plans.
Understand your week areas from the four modules and put extra focus on the Feeblest one as that
alone can turn you upside down.
Stay Happy
Reply
Thank yiu for this encouragemnet Tahir. You are quite right aim higher than you need that way you
have room to fall and who knows you might get the higher score. Congratulations on amazing
scores. The writing is the one that scuppers everyone it seems. Its not easy to write well and it
takes a lot of dedicated practice. The two things to remember are firstly make sure that someone
who knows what they are doing checks it and dont be in a hurry with writing slow and steady.

Dear Kashif
thank you for your comment and question which is a great one and one that I am asked over and
over.
The only magic key to IELTS is your English level. Maybe you are concentrating too much on your
IELTS practice and not enough on getting your English better. Get as much speaking and listening
practice as you can and for reading you need to develop techniques that will help you to get the
correct answers quickly.
Sign up to my English learning site and you will receive information on how to improve your IELTS

Hi,
I have completed the ielts practise material provided. I scored a band in between 6.5 to 7 in all the 5
tests available in reading. I am not sure how to work on my reading skills because this is exactrly where
I am lagging. I need a band 8 and my exam is on 17th nov 2012. Please advise.
Reply
Dear Tashi,
Band 8 is not easy to get but is possible if your English is at the right level and you focus your
practice on the areas that you need to improve and dont just go practice the tests. There are many
strategies and techniques for reading which you can practise and these will help you to get more
speed and accuracy into your IELTS Reading.
I have more information about this on my site http://www.gapfillers.com

Thank you for your comment. Firstly, dont be depressed with such good results in the other
parts of the exam you can do this but need some support and some focus. The truth is that the
more you sit for the exam the more fearful you will feel this is natural. It is also quite common
for the reading and writing to be the papers that give the most trouble as they require help (have
you ever had your writing checked? If not then it is not easy to improve). The reading is a matter of
adopting certain strategies and processes that will make sure you get the right answers in the first
instance and get them quickly in the second. The good news is that once you know these
strategies with practice you can overcome these issues.
I suggest that you wait for your result and see how you get on. If the result is not what you want
then perhaps we can have a conversation and see if I can help you with this?

Shivanigajjar,Thank you for your comment. The best way to improve your IELTS score is to work
on your English and then practice what you need for the test. Make sure that you get enough
exposure to speaking and listening (you can do this online) and read newspapers to help with
vocabulary and information on the topics. Writing improves best when you work with a teacher
who can correct and advise you it is very difficult to do this by yourself. I suggest that you take a
dedicated IELTS course or find a teacher who can help you to improve your score. If your last
exam was 2009 then you will need to make sure that your English level hasnt dropped since then
as Im sure you know if you are not using a language you can easily forget things and the level
will drop.

hello sir, i am sudip from nepal. i am trying to do best from my side in ielts and i desire to get overall 6.5
and not below 6 in each section. i fell , i am weak in reading than other section, what can i do? please
make me clear

Hi Sudip thank you for your comment. Firstly you should make sure that your English in all areas
(reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and vocabulary) is at the right level to get the 6.5. If
it is then you will not struggle in the exam. So keep improving your English skills. The second thing
is to make sure that you know the strategies you need to improve and get the band you want this
is especially true in reading as you have a lot of questions and little time. You need to know and
practice these strategies. Unless you practise them you will not be able to do them quickly and
that is key to getting a good score.

Hello Allam thank you for your comment. I am glad that you have found these useful. I would say
in addition that the best tip is to find out where you get your lowest scores both in which paper and
also in which type of exercises and concentrate on improving these. Also get an IELTS teacher to
check your writing this is critical to improving your writing skills.
If you want to sign up to Gapfillers (you can do this for free) you can get more tips there in our
monthly newsletters and also receive a word of the day all of which are suitable for IELTS
speaking. http://www.gapfillers.com

This post has really motivated me. Certainly one of the best tips I have come across so far.. Hopefully
more posts as such will be continuing even in future..
I am planning to appear for my IELTS and TOEFL exams this year for the first time and I am not taking
any additional coaching as the centers nearby arent good, as far as Ive heard, and too pricey.
Moreover, I am appearing for my Boards this term too. So I was hoping I would get the required
coaching from you. Will gapfillers, your e-learning site, be enough to prepare me for the exams or shall I
need to take up some additional coaching too? Just so you know, I am also practising online these days
on my own from the sites available.

Wow, a great post full of useful tips for all students, whether doing the IELTS or not. I have also found
that many learners dont use/ dont know how to use functional language.
http://www.englishclub.com/vocabulary/functional-language.htm
Their speaking seems a little bare as a result. Perhaps another thing I try to help them with is using a
variety of linkers. http://www.english-at-home.com/grammar/linking-words/

hi Taran,
Reading tips should be applied, while doing practice IELTS test once have to concentrate on the
mistakes.
Once you find the mistakes then please check on it rather its a mistake because of applied reading
technique. If thats the case then change
your technique and try again unless you find a best suitable technique for you.

Hello Taran thank you for your comment. I have written some tips on reading above. I hope they
will help you.
