To Use a Current Balance to Verify the Equation “F = B I L”

Aim: IB Criteria Assessed
The 2 benefits of this experiment are: Data Collection, Data Processing,
• it is important to know how to carry out a controlled scientific Evaluation
experiment that will step by step isolate and test each of the Criteria Aspect Level
variables in an equation - in this case, “B”, “I” and “L”. assessed 1 2 3 awarded
(“controlling the variables”) D
• this experiment needs a lot of careful manipulation of the
DCP
equipment to make it work perfectly. This precision and patience is
vital in scientific experiments. CE

Apparatus:
2 strong neodymium magnets and metal holder, 1 m of thick copper ISM score
wire, variable d.c. power supply, electronic balance, crocodile clips,
cardboard wire holder, tape

Balance
Method:
A cardboard device holding a wire is set on an electronic balance. Two magnets are suspended above
the wire so that the wire passes perpendicularly through the magnetic field. As current is passed
through the wire in one direction, a force pushes down on the scale. As current is passed through the
wire in the opposite direction, a force pulls up on the scale.

Theory:
The upward and downward force (F) on the copper wire is given by the equation, F = B x I x L.

Data Collection and Processing.

• Collect and record pairs of results for Force and Current including units and uncertainties.
• Present these data clearly.
• Process your raw data in a way which will allow you to accurately calculate the value of the
magnetic field strength, B.
• Take into account any errors or uncertainties in your processed data.

Conclusion and Evaluation:

• Give a conclusion and explanation of your results; compare to literature values if possible.
• Evaluate the above procedure (method) and apparatus used, including limitations, weaknesses or
errors.
• Identify any weaknesses and suggest ways of improving the investigation.

The above information was given to the student by the instructor. What follows
