ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We express our feeling of gratitude to the Chief Engineer (C&O), Wanakbori Thermal
Power Station for granting permission to visit the plant. We are especially very much
thankful to Mr. A. J. gandhi, who took great effort to share his practical knowledge to
enhance the technical skill of the students. We would like to appreciate their concern for
the technical upliftment of the students.
We are very much thankful to Dr. H.M.Nimbark, Principal, GMIT for allowing and guiding
for the proper execution of the visit. We are also very much thankful to the management of
GMIT for allowing the visit.

GENERAL INFORMATION

About the GSECL

Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (GSECL) is a company promoted in 1993 by the
Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd. (GUVNL formerly GEB) as 100 % owned subsidiary.
Government of Gujarat approved GSECL as a generating company to undertake
implementation of new power projects.
Wanakbori Thermal Power Station
The Wanakbori Thermal power Station is located near Wanakbori Dam on the bank of Mahi
River in Kheda district. It is a Coal based power station. There are seven units of 210 MW
each with a total installed capacity of 1470 MW. All units are installed with BHEL make
Boiler & TG sets. WTPS is ISO 9000:2008 & 14001:2004 certified plant. WTPS is super
thermal power station of Gujarat. To unload received coal rack, WTPS has Wagon tippler
house. There are total 5 tipplers which unloads the coal from coal rack round the clock.

OBJECTIVE
Industrial visits represent an important activity in any engineering undergraduate program
that contributes to the achievement of various essential learning outcomes and
program objectives. This is achieved through identifying learning outcomes and a
suitable industrial site to achieve them. For this purpose a thermal power plant w as
indentified as a site to be visited by students. The visit was planned for 50 students
of 2nd semester to help to achieve the learning outcomes.
The main objective of the industrial visit was to get all the students acquainted with actual
industrial environment and to observe that how power is generated, different controls
required and to understand function of numbers of electrical & mechanical machines and
an interdisciplinary approach.

ASSIMILATION
Department of Electrical Engineering had organized an industrial visit of Thermal Power
Station, Wanakbori (GSECL) for2nd semester students. 50 students along with 2 faculty
members visited the thermal power station. WTPS has 7 units each of 210 MW. So, the total
installed capacity of the plant is 1470 MW.
Following sections of the WTPS were visited.

Training center
Coal and ash handling plant
Boiler section
Turbine/Generator floor
Electrical control room
Cooling tower
Switch yard (220kV & 400 kV)

At the training center, Mr. A. J. Gandhi explained the working cycle of thermal power station
with power point presentation and videos. Students observed various small scale models of
equipments used in the power plant.
Coal and ash handling plant
The 210 MW unit consumes 125 ton coal per hour to generate the electricity. So, bulk
amount of coal is transported through railway and with the help of Wagon Tripler coal is
transferred to the coal storage area. To start the ignition of the boiler residual furnace oil
(RFO) or light diesel oil (LDO) is used which is transported through tanker wagon by
railway. After the combustion of coal in boiler furnace, ash is produced which is collected
and treated by ash handling plant. The ash is used for many industrial applications like
production of cement, ceramic, etc.
Boiler section
During visit to boiler section, FD fan, ID fan, PA fan, APH, boiler furnace area and other
auxiliary devices essential for boiler operation observed. Each boiler unit has 2 FD fans, 2
ID fans and 2 PA fans. The boiler consumes 125 ton pulverized coal per hour with 720 ton
of air to generate heat at the temperature of 1200-1300o C.

Turbine / Generator Floor

Students observed HP, IP and LP sections of turbines coupled with generator. Superheated
steam at 140 kg/cm2 pressure and 545o C temperature is fed to the turbine. Generator has
capacity of 210 MW at 15.75 kV, 9050 A.
Control room
Students visited control room of unit no. 3. It is equipped with DCS facility provided by ABB
Ltd. All the important data were displayed in real time mode like MW, MVAr, frequency,
power factor, phase current, etc. on the display screen. Students understood the process of
Synchronization with the grid, concept of Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR), different
types of protective relays.
Cooling Towers
There are 7 natural draught cooling towers (NDCT) used for cooling of circulating water of
condenser. Water is sprayed at the height of 21 meters in the tower and due to natural
draught of air, its temperature is reduced by 10o C and this water is pumped in to
condenser tubes for condensation of steam exhausted from LP turbine.
Switch Yard
Switch yard consists of two sections, 220 kV and 400 kV. The voltage of unit no. 1, 2 and 3
is stepped up from 15.75 kV to 220 kV and the power is transmitted at 220 kV level. There
are 7 outgoing transmission lines at 220 kV voltage level. The voltage of unit no. 4, 5, 6 and
7 is stepped up from 15.75 kV to 400 kV and the power is transmitted at 400 kV level.
There are 4 outgoing transmission lines at 400 kV voltage level.

Unforgettable moments during WTPS

visit

OUTCOME
The visit consists of presentation and understanding about the plant and power generation
cycle at training centre followed by the plant being visited. The students are able to

Recognize the process units Boiler, Pumps, Condenser, Steam turbine,

Generator, Electrostatic precipitator, Pulveriser, Reclaimer etc. and generate the
process flow diagram.
Identify input and output for the process.
Experience the importance of working safety.
Understand the concept of thermal energy conversion and estimate overall thermal
efficiency of power plant.
Understand how the product of the power plant interfaces to the world.
