The drive stops when the lever is released.

Gear lever operation

The gear lever has two positions (FAST and SLOW) enabling the speed of the mower to be varied according to
the
requirements of the operator and the job. The speed must only be changed when the mower is stationary.
Ensure you are familiar with the mower speeds in each gear prior to the
commencement of mowing.

Handle fuel only outdoors.

Wipe up spills immediately.

16

Engine oil

.
2.
1

Change engine oil (refer Maintenance, page 19).

Remove the spark plug and pour 5-1Occ of clean engine oil into the
cylinder. Using the recoil, crank the engine a few revolutions to
distribute the oil in the cylinder, then reinstallthe spark plug.

lf your mower will be stored with fuel in the fuel tank and carburettor, it is
important to reduce the hazard of fuel vapour ignition. Select a well
ventilated storage area away from any appliance that operates with a
flame, such as a furnace or water heater. Also avoid any area with a spark producing electric motor, or where
power tools are operated.

lf possible, avoid storage areas with high humidity, because they may promote rust and corrosion.
lf there is fuel in the fuel tank, leave the fuel valve in the OFF position.
Keep the mower level in storage. Tilting can cause fuel or oil leakage.
With the engine and exhaust system cool, cover the engine to keep out dust. A hot engine and exhaust system
can ignite or melt some materials. Do not use sheet plastic as a dust cover. A non-porous cover will trap moisture
around the engine, promoting rust and corrosion.

Removal from storage

1.
2.

Check your mower as described in the pre-operation checks section of this manual (refer page 11).
lf the fuel was drained during storage preparation, fill the tank with fresh fuel. lf you keep a container of fuel

for refuelling, be sure it contains only fresh fuel. Fuel oxidises and deteriorates over time, causing hard
starting.

3.

lf the cylinder was coated with oil during storage preparation, the engine will smoke briefly at start-up. This is

normal.

Remove the paper element from the air cleaner base.

Paper element
Tap the element several times on a hard surface to remove excess dir1, or blow compressed air (not
exceeding 2O7kPa\ through the filter from the wire screen side. Never try to brush off dirt; brushing will force

dirt into the fibres. Replace the paper element if it is excessively dirty.

4.

Foam element
Clean in warm, soapy water or non flammable solvent, rinse and dry thoroughly. Do not use fuel as a cleaning
solvent, because this will create a risk of fire or explosion.

5.

Wipe dirt from the air cleaner base and air cleaner cover using a moist rag. Be careful to prevent dirt from
entering the air duct that leads to the carburettor.

6.

Reinstallthe air cleaner elements, and make sure both elements are properly positioned. lnstallthe air cleaner

Grass cutting basics

When to mow
Most grasses should be mowed when they have grown 12 to 25mm above their recommended height.

Cutting height
Consult a local nursery or lawrt'and garden centre for cutting height recommendations and advice about specific
lypes of grasses and growing conditions in your area.
lf you look closely, you'll see

ihai most grass has stems and leaves. lf you cut off the leaves, you'll scalp the lawn.

Let the grass recover between mowing.

lf your grass gets too tall,

cut it once at the highest height setting then mow again in 2 or 3 days. Don't take off
more than one third of total grass height in any one mowing, or brown patches may develop.

Cutting width
For an even lawn finish, overlap each mowing path by a few inches. lf the grass is very tall or thick, use more

cverlap and a narrower mowing path.

BIade speed
fhe blade must spin very fast to cut properly. Always use the fast throttle setting and keep the engine running at
maximum rpm.
lf engine speed drops, that means the blades are trying to take

too big a bite. Mow a narrower path, use a slower

lonrvard speed, or raise the cutting height.

BIade sharpness
Sharp blades cut cleanly. Dull blades tear the grass, leaving shredded ends that turn brown.
y'Vhen

your blades don't cut 'cleanly' anymore, have them sharpened or replaced.

Dry grass
f the ground is too dry, mowing will stir up a lot of dust. Besides being unpleasant to work in, too must dust will
:log the air filter.

f dust is a problem, water your lawn the day before mowing. Mow when the grass is dry to touch, but the soil is
still moist.

Wet grass
/Vet grass clippings tend to clog the mower deck and chute, and they will lie in clumps on the lawn. Always wait

lor wet grass to dry before mowing.

33

Mulching grass
Mulching cuts grass clippings into fine particles that fall through the turf and decompose quickly. This returns
nutrients to the soil and reduces the need for raking, bagging and disposal.
Honda mower decks that are designed for mulching have a plug or cover plate to close the discharge opening
and re-circulate the grass clippings through a special mulching plate.

For best mulching results, mow the lawn frequently, cutting off less than one inch of
grass each time. ln growing season, you will probably need to mow the lawn twice a
week.
A counter-clockwise mowing pattern is the most efficient for mulching. This is due to
mower deck design and blade rotational direction. lf your lawn has an irregular'shape,
or many obstacles, divide it into sections where you can use counter-clockwise mowing
patterns.

MULCHING PATTERN

A relatively slow forward speed will help to assure thorough mulching, especially in thick grass.
Mulching requires more attention to operation and maintenance than other kinds of mowing. lt's very important
that the grass clippings get cut into fine particles and are distributed on the lawn without clumping.

o
o
.
.

Always wait for wet grass to dry before mulching.

Mulch with the throttle lever in the fast position.
Keep the inside of the mower deck clean.
Keep the blade sharp.

Mulching Ieaves
lf you want to mulch fallen leaves into your lawn, don't let them get too deep before you begin. For best results,
start mulching while grass still shows through the leaf cover.

Gatching grass
Catching should be considered where you want the area to be clear of lawn clippings
such as around swimming pools.
A grass catcher works like the bag on a vacuum cleaner. The mowing blade blows air
through ihe catcher which traps the grass clippings.

Clogged grass catchers will not work well. Always empty grass catchers before they
become packed full. Wash dirty grass catchers with a garden hose, and allow them to
dry completely before use.
A clockwise mowing pattern will give the best catching performance, leaving the least
amount of clippings on the lawn. This is due to mower deck design and blade rotational

direction.
