Webinar Description
This 1 hour presentation outlines the concerted efforts and successful interventions made by a southwest Tribe to
reduce suicide after losing several young people in a short period of time. The San Carlos Apache Suicide Prevention
Task Force implemented a multi-pronged prevention, intervention, and postvention plan that included collaboration
with organizations across the state. This presentation shares information about some of the Tribes more successful
programs and offers suggestions for other organizations wanting to implement similar strategies.

About the Presenters

Dr. Thea Wilshire serves as Clinical Director for the San Carlos Apache Wellness Center, a tribally-run
outpatient behavioral health clinic. For almost 20 years, she has worked to develop culturally-sensitive communitybased counseling and prevention programs for the San Carlos Apache Tribe. Wilshire holds masters degrees in
psychology and theology, a doctorate in clinical psychology, licenses as both a psychologist and substance abuse
counselor, and has multiple peer-reviewed publications and presentations. She has been recognized regionally and
nationally for her leadership and professional work.

Gerilyn Goseyun is a member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe. Gerilyn received her Bachelor of Social
Work from Northern Arizona University in 1993 and has since then worked with various tribes in Arizona as a C.P.S.
Investigator and has also worked for the state as a Crisis Clinician for the past 6 years until coming to San Carlos
Wellness Center as a Suicide Surveillance Coordinator/Crisis. Gerilyn is also involved with the Suicide Prevention Task
Force that meets monthly, working with task force members in different agencies in Arizona and also with other
departments within the Tribe.
