Section I Application

Some of the differences from Section VIII

You can find the applicable sections of ASME Section I in the back of your Farris
Catalog. If you dont have one, you need to get one from your local Farris Rep. The
following list is only a minor portion of Section I, and only to somewhat help those of us
that have calculated mostly Section VIII valves to learn something about Section I valves.
Section I is for fired boilers.

Per PG-67.1, for boiler with more than 500 ft^2 area, you need at least 2
safety valves.
With one valve, you are allowed 3% accumulation. With 2 or more safety
valves, you are allowed 6%.
Required relief rate is typically the boiler capacity.
With multiple valves, you can have one valve set as high as 3% above MAWP.
Per PG-67.3, there is a maximum range of set pressures. The lowest set
pressure cannot be any lower than 90% of the highest set pressure. (This
doesnt apply to high temperature water boilers, only to steam boilers).
Per PG-71.1, when 2 safety valves are mounted on a common connection, the
smaller valve needs to have at least the capacity of the larger valve.
PG-71.2, Connections for safety valves on boilers cant be used for any other
functions. For example, you cant have a pressure gage on the inlet line to the
SV.
PG-71.2, the SV shall be attached as close as possible to the boiler, without
any unnecessary pipe or fittings. Any such pipe or fittings shall be no longer
than the face to face dimension of the same diameter tee (Im assuming this
means a tee with the same diameter as the inlet connection on the SV. The
dimensions for the different sized tees is listed in PG-39 which I dont have
access to). This isnt much pipe. The wording is SHALL, which doesnt
leave any room for interpretation. I guess the only way out of the wording is
to say that you are not in a Code State. But that only flies until you go get
across the court room from Harold Fisher.
PG-71.2, Every safety valve shall be connected so as to stand in an upright
position, with the spindle vertical.
This is similar to Section VIII, PG-71.3, the opening or connection between
the boiler and the SV shall have at least the area of the valve inlet.
PG-71.3, No valve of any description SHALL be placed in the pipe between
the required SV and the boiler, nor on the discharge pipe between the SV and
the atmosphere.
PG-71.3, when a discharge pipe is used, the cross-sectional area shall be not
less than the full area of the valve outlet or of the total of the valve outlet areas
of the valve outlets, discharging thereinto. It shall be as short and straight as
possible and so arranged as to avoid undue stresses on the valve or valves.

PG-71.5, when a boiler is fitted with two or more SVs on one connection, this
connection to the boiler SHALL have a cross-sectional area not less than the
combined area of inlet connections of all the SVs with which it connects.
PG68.1, (with exceptions) every superheater shall have at least one SV
between the steam outlet of the superheater and the 1st stop valve. Superheater
SV set pressure needs to account for the pressure drop between the boiler and
the SV. (SV must have at least 3% overpressure after you subtract out the
pressure drop from the allowable accumulation in the boiler).
PG-68.2, you can take credit for the superheaters SV for the associated boiler
if there are no intervening block valves and the boiler SV is at least 75% of
the total required capacity for the boiler.
There is no guidance given on the allowable inlet pressure drop or allowable
backpressure on the SV.
There is no guidance on relieving any liquid cases
The capacity should be determined using the steam equations.
The capacity of the superheater SV can be considered but must not take credit
for more than 25% of the boiler capacity per PG-68.2.
Per PG-67.2.6, if you can block in the economizer away from the steam drum,
it will need its own Section I safety valve sized based on the rated Q/1000
lb/hr saturated steam. Since this valve will be located on a line normally in
liquid service, it will need to be packed lever (closed bonnet) design such as is
available in the Farris 6600 series.
