Thecardprinterappliesimages,text,andencodeddatatoplasticcards.Itprintsfullcolorand
monochromeimages,dependingontheprintribboninstalled.
Abusyissuancesitemightissueupto10,000cardsamonth.Duringthesebusytimes,thesite
mightusemorethanoneprintertokeepupwithdemand.Theprinterissuescardseitheroneata
timeorinbatchesupto100cardsatatime.A200cardinputhopperisavailableandcanbe
installedwithouttools.Inaddition,anoptionalmultihopperwithsixinputhoppers,eachwitha

Chapter 3: Using the System
Thissectionprovidesinformationabouthowacardtravelsthroughthe
printer,printercontrols,printingatestcard,loadingandreplacing
supplies,andcleaningtheprinter.
How the Card Travels

CardprocessingbeginswhenyousendthecardtoprintfromthePC.Thehopperpickmechanism
picksacardandmovesthecardintotheprinterforprocessing.
Optionally,thecardmovestothemagneticstripeencodingareaortothesmartcardparkstation,
dependingonthetypeofcardselected.Encrypteddataisdecryptedandwrittentothecard.If
thesystemincludesalaminator,thecardthenmovesintothelaminatorwheretheoverlay
materialisappliedtothecard.Thefinishedcardexitstheprinterthroughthecardoutputhopper.

About the Laminator System

AlaminatorsystemconsistsofaCDseriescardprinterandaCLMlaminator.Thesystemcanprint
cardsandapplyanoverlaymaterialonthefrontandbackofthecardforincreaseddurabilityand
security.Usinganoverlaymaterialwithholographicorothertransparentimagesalsoimproves
thesecurityofthecard.Thesematerialsaretamperevident,makingitdifficulttoreproduceor
modifyacard.

Thelaminatingsystemsupportsfullcolorprintribbonsthatdonothaveatopcoat(T)panel,
includingYMCKandYMCKKribbon.Thetopcoatorpatchoverlayappliedbythelaminators
providesprotectionagainstwearandcolorfading,sotheprintribbontopcoatpanelisnot
needed.However,theDuraShieldclearoverlayrequiresthattheribbontopcoatbeappliedtothe
cardfirst.
Thesystemalsosupportsfullcolorprintribbonwithafrontsideultraviolet(UV)fluorescing
panel,YMCKFKT.TheUV(F)panelisdesignedtocreateanopticallyvariableimageonthecard.

TheL1andL2laminatorscanapplyeithertopcoatorpatchmaterial.Topcoatisacontinuousfilm

beginningofthecard.Theregistrationmarkisarectangularholebetweenthepatches.
Patchescancovertheentirecard,canhaveanopeningforasmartcardchip,orcancoverthe
cardunderthemagneticstripe.IfbothL1andL2laminatorsareinstalled,eachlaminatorcan
applydifferentoverlaymaterial.Forexample,youmightapplyapatchthatcoversthecomplete
cardonthefront,andapatchsizedforamagneticstripeontheback.

Serializedoverlayisaspecialpatchthatisdesignedtoprovideanadditionallevelofsecurityto
yourcards.Theoverlayincludesauniqueserializationcodematchedwithabarcode.The
optionalbarcodescannerinthelaminatorretrievestheuniquevalueprintedoneachserialized
overlaypatchbyreadingthematchingbarcodeprintedonthelaminationmaterialnexttothe
patch.Thisvalueisreturnedtoyourapplication,whichcanstoretheinformationinafileto
provideatraceableidentifierthatlinksthepatchappliedtothecardwiththeotherdatausedto
personalizethecard.
RegisteredHolographicSerializedPatch
ThebarcodescannerislocatedinsidethelaminatorinfrontoftheL1laminatorcartridge.The
serializedoverlayisalwaysloadedintheL1cartridge.

TheCardPrinterDriverallowsyoutospecifybothprinterandlaminationpreferences.Referto

Iftheprinterhasonelaminator,youcanapplytheoverlaymaterialtooneorbothsidesof
thecard.

Afteryousetuptheprinter,printseveraltestcardstodeterminehowwellthelaminatorapplies
materialtothecard.YoucanprinttestcardsfromtheCardPrinterDriver(refertotheprinters
DriverGuide),fromtheprinterLCDpanel(refertoPrintaTestCardonpage 20),orfromPrinter
Manager(refertotheprintersInstallationandAdministratorsGuide).Youmayneedtoprint
multipletestcardstomakesurethattheoverlayispositionedcorrectly.Thecardstock,thecard
design,andtheprintersenvironmentallcanaffecttheappearanceofcards.
Whenevaluatingacard,makesurethat:
Theoverlaysarebeingappliedproperly:
Eachoverlayisappliedcompletelytothecard.
Thematerialadhereswelltotheedgesofthecard.
Theoverlaydoesnotcomeoffwhenthecardisbentortwisted.
Thecardisdebowedcorrectly.

Cleanthelaminatorwhenatleastonelaminatorcartridgeisloadedwithholographicoverlay

Thisprocedureusesadoublesided,stickycleaningcardthatremovesholographic
overlayparticlesfromthelaminator.WhenyoucleantheCDsystemusingaregular
cleaningcard,thecardalsomovesintothelaminatorandcleansthelaminator
rollers,thecardentryarea,andtheimpresserexitrollers.Thisissufficientifyouare
notusingholographicoverlay.RefertoRunaCleaningCardonpage 32.

withasmallplastichoseattachmenttocarefullyremovetheparticles.Alsocleanany
remainingparticlesfromtheoutputhopper.
HINTS&TIPS
Ifthecleaningcardisnotpulledintothelaminator,thecardisnotinthecorrectposition.The
cleaningcardmustbelocatedundertherollersofthecardexitslotinsidetheoutputhopper.
Attheendofthelaminatorcleaningcycle,thecardcansticktotherollersintheoutput
hopper.Pullonthecardtoremoveit.
Discardthelaminatorcleaningcardafteroneuse.
Avoidcontactwiththeheatedroller,whichcontainssensitiveelectroniccomponents.
Ifcleaningthelaminatordoesnotsolvetheproblem,contactyourserviceproviderfor
assistance.
