Road Naming By-Law

RECOMMENDATION
That Council in Committee recommends to Council that a revised Road Naming By-Law be passed
for all roads ways within the Municipality.
BACKGROUND
The Township currently has two Road Naming By-laws that were passed prior to amalgamation in
2000. It has recently been found that there is an addressing issue with a property along Rodger Street
that has prompted the need to update the current by-laws.
DISCUSSION
The Township currently has separate Road Naming By-Laws for Stafford-Pembroke Township and
Alice & Fraser Township. Both By-laws were passed in the late nineties as part of the County wide
civic addressing/9-1-1 project.
It has recently been brought to Staffs attention that there is a single home located on Rodger Street
with a Spruce Street East address. As there are no other homes or vacant lots on Rodger Street, it is
simple to change the name of Rodger Street to Spruce Street East. Spruce Street East would
continue to the intersection with Elm Street East.
As part of the update, if is recommended that Taylor Heights Drive also be added to the by-law.
The classification of the road would stay as private until it is turned over to the Municipality.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS
The only costs associated with the change would be the installation of new intersection signs at an
approximate price of $100.00.

THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWNSHIP OF LAURENTIAN VALLEY

BY-LAW NUMBER 2016-06-029
Being a By-Law to provide for the naming and renaming of the highways, streets, roads
and private roads within the Township of Laurentian Valley.

WHEREAS Section 48, 61(1) and (2) of the Municipal Act 2001 SO., 2001, c. 25 as
amended, authorizes the Councils of local municipalities to pass By-laws giving names
to or changing the names of highways, streets, roads, and private roads and for affixing
the names at the corners thereof, on public or private property.
AND WHEREAS Section 48 of the Municipal Act SO., 2001, c.25 as amended, provides
that before a By-law is passed to change the name of a highway, street, road or private
road, a municipality shall give Public Notice of its intention to pass the By-law.
AND WHEREAS the Council of the Corporation of the Township of Laurentian Valley
has caused a notice of the proposed By-law to be published in the local newspaper on
(DATE) and at a meeting held on (DATE) has heard any person who claims to be
adversely affected by the By-law.
NOW THEREFORE the Council of the Corporation of the Township of Laurentian Valley
hereby enact as follows:

Short Title
1. This By-law may be cited as the Road Naming By-law of the Corporation of the
Township of Laurentian Valley.

Naming Of Highways/Streets/Roads
1. All highways/streets/roads in the Municipality shall be names and/or known according
to Schedule A attached to this By-law, as illustrated on Schedule B.
2. Schedules A and B attached hereto form part of the By-law.
3. The Municipality is hereby authorized to affix street name signs at the corners of
every highway/street/road, on public or private property, subject to the
jurisdictions and the requirements of the County or the Ministry of Transportation.
4. All road name signs at intersections shall include the approved road name. Where
new signs are to be erected, the sign shall include the approved road name and
the direction and sequencing of property numbering.
5. Should any section, clause or provision in the By-law held to be invalid by a court
of competent jurisdiction, the remainder of the By-law shall not be affected.
6. Any By-law or parts of By-laws inconsistent with this By-law, or names of streets
in registered plans inconsistent with this By-Law are hereby deemed repealed.
7. Repeals By-Law 53-09-98 (Stafford & Pembroke Township) and repeals By-Law
97-13 (Alice & Fraser Township).
8. This By-Law shall come into full force and effect when a copy of it, certified under
the hand of the Clerk and the seal of the Corporation, has been registered in the
proper Land Registry Office.
